I have to admit that I was skeptical at first but tried your trick and it worked like a charm. I have an X-2000R that was in storage for years. Of course I also watched your second video which identified the proper connectors to measure for the X-2000R. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Hello, I have got the same issue_ the tape slips when playing forward, for the reverse playing is fine. Feeling sad because there is no repairing store/ technical person in my country.
Many thanks to Bigg Matt, my TEAC X-1000RBL was having the same problems and thanks to his very well explained remedies, I was able to fix it. The only difference is that I installed 2 new pinch rollers to complement the repairs. Now it works like a new Reel2Reel. Again my thanks to Bigg Matt for all he is doing on and off RU-vid.
Hey Bigg Matt! I just wanted to thank you for this demonstration. I have a Teac X-1000R. The first connector measured close to 5 volts but the second connector (The white one) was measuring around 3 volts. As soon as I did what you demonstrated with bending the board carefully with the screwdriver, I was able to get it to read 5 volts and it did resolve the issue of the tape derailing in that direction. Thank you so much!
Thank you Big Matt, with the help from this clip I was able to get my X 1000 R playing great again. Before watching this video my reel to reel would not even play any of my reels. Now I'm playing 35 year old tapes again! Thank you for sharing your tips.............

Ive probably done this procedure a good few times over the last decade or so. The metal bracket design is the biggest issue here. I did toy with the idea of redesigning that bracket so that the plate height was adjustable on a rail that can then be locked with a grub screw, but life gets in the way and before you know it, you are opening up the machine again to bend the bracket..... and the idea to redesign the bracket resurfaces (to ultimatly go nowehere again). Great channel and now subbed!

Bigg Matt: Awesome DIY tip. I haven't worked on a Teac 1000 but now I know the trick to correct tension arm just in case a Teac come my way with that issue. I wouldn't trust Alexia around me.

hi i used to get this on my otari mtr 12 i know the tascam has a fine tenson pots i looked into how it work i made a mod to my otari to get the tenson right down with out playing with the deck ad on power trans and more small parts made to ad on pcb's i can take of the motors easy
Ok! I’m going in on my X-2000Rbl tension arm plates! I’ll let you know how I get on-It has had this issue as long as I can remember and I bought it new. It has always been my problem child-I had to replace the power transformer because she overheated in my install (word of caution -don’t obstruct the ventilation in the already restrictive wooden cases!)
Thanks again Big Matt! The tension is taut across heads in forward and reverse-FF and Rewind are in slow X spec 200min for 3600ft. I had to set the right to 4.83v in order for FF and REW to work at all so something else is amiss but all works fine for now.
@@ppeterso22 there are 2 white, plastic pots in the same area you measured the tension voltage. Center them, and adjust the tension voltage for 5V on both sides. Check operation and make small adjustments to the pots as necessary. Top one is FWD back tension , bottom is for REV
Frist of all thank again for your excellent video it really helped out. We have a problem with the reverse record the left channel is perfect, but no sound output on the right channel. We cleaned the heads and transport rollers ect. DeoxIt on all the pots and reverse switches. Any help in this matter would be highly appreciated. Thank agin

Hello Bigg Matt, I really could use your help. My local tech and I haven’t been able to find the problem on my X2000R. The recording button is faulty, it’s stuck on flashing red, it could not be turned off. The problem is believed to be related to capstan motor not working, we traced the problem to the bottom board but have not found the culprit yet. The one ohm resistor for the twin 24V power supply for the capstan motor and the bottom “logic” board kept burning, unless we unplugged the connection ribbon (5-wire) to the bottom board then it doesn’t burn. Obviously something is shorted but we haven’t found it yet.
Bigg Matt: I have a Teac A-4300SX and when I Play the tape forward the tape pass over the pinch roller in Line, but when playing reverse the tape start slipping off the pinch roller and goes fast speed.Charles from Malta eu.Thanks
Hi CS, Make sure your pinch roller isn't glazed over and slick. Also, make sure the pinch roller pressure is sufficient when pressing the tape to the capstan.
Thanks Matt! Had the same problem with my Teac X1000R. Even worse: it used to crumble my precious tape between capstan and pinch-roller… Always when the tape was in the beginning position. I don’t have that expensive measuringtool you have, but after moving that metal piece on the tension-arm, i tweaked it electronically by trial & error. It’s been playing like a bird ever since, for over three years now! One question: when i compared the ‘heads setup’ in a downloaded manual with my machine, i noticed that the order of the heads (rec/play/rec/play is different. Is that common for this model? I’m sure mine is not altered; i got it from the first owner. Anyway, thanks for your always very enjoyable videos! All the best from Amsterdam, Netherlands

Thanks Bigg Matt, you may have saved my X-2000M as well! It played and fast forwarded OK, but refused to rewind. Checked the voltage on tension-arms and had left 7.5 V and right 1.1 V... Put both to 5 V and now rewind is OK but it refuse to fast forward... Also, when rewinding it does not respond to stop or play buttons, so I have to power off to stop it - not good. Do you know what voltage I should aim for?
Hi KA, for some reason I'm just seeing your comment. Apologies for the delay. Sounds like the rewind button isn't making good contact. Try working the switch in n out many times and pressing hard on the left or right edge of the switch to make contact. Let me know how it goes.
hi just done alot of work to a tascam 38 alot of work there's worlds a part from a tascam 38 and this deck this has to deal with the thin tape like the TP tape on a tascam there's only SP or LPif you can find it i know how the tenson set up works on the 38 now if the main pcb goe's bad they do put in a apple pie and some power ic's and re lays will get the deck working i had to to pcb was just to bad to fix if the capstan motor goe's the deck is junk bob
Great video brother! I have that issue AND when it does ff, it won't stop when it gets up to speed!! I have to put my hand on the take up reel to slow it down to stop it, or hit the power button. Have you seen that before? By the way, its not an x1000r....just x1000

Dear Bigg Matt, I need to order a new capstan belt. May I know the correct/original TEAC X-1000R capstan belt width and thickness? Just checked my old and stretched capstan belt which is about 4.5mm wide and 0.4mm thick. However, those X-1000R capstan belts visible in videos found on RU-vid seem to be much wider in dimension. Hope to seek your guidance please. Thanks!

I inherited one from my friend who passed away. He bought it in Germany while in the Army in the early 80's. It has been in storage for many years. He told me he rarely played it. I know nothing about them and would like to sell it. I know it comes on when plugged up but the lifter thing feels stuck and the reel tables don't move. But I hear something when I turn it on. A faint clicking sound. Should I sell for parts or try to fix it. I know the ones I've seen for sale are not cheap. Please advise
Hi TR, Good question. If you have any interest at all in keeping the deck and using it, you should consider having it repaired. If you have no interest in the TEAC, I would sell it as is for parts. Normally, you'll get more $ selling it on ebay. If you sell it on Marketplace or Craigslist you can expect a slightly lower price but there are no seller fees. Hope this helps. The only thing you need to worry.about is using DBX. OTHERWISE , the sound between decks should be very similar, provided they have been calibrated accurately using a calibration tape or a method that gets the same results. A good recording should sound good on any deck of the same format. DBX, though it gets rid of a lot of the noise, can cause tape to distort, especially in more sibilant recordings, but it does sound good on this deck, using high quality consistent tape... but in a non DBX deck; it will sound sibilant and with very stilted compressed dynamics. Dbx only sounds good on DBX... abd often only on the deck it was recorded with, as there are a lot of adjustments for both recording and playback that need to be exact, plus the tape itself must get a good clean transfer of record current. Dirty heads, poor contact, weak back tension can make the recordings sound worse and DBX will magnify those issues

Will not play forward or reverse. clicks like it wants to. but will not move. a beautiful machine, but needs servicing again. Is this something I can persuade you to handle??
Hi TD, I'm a little backed up now, I should be caught up in early Sep. Chances are you could bring the machine back to life yourself. I'd begin with insuring the capstan motor spins when the tension arms are lifted. If so, check condition of the capstan drive belt and replace if necessary. Next, clean/lube the pinch roller lift mechanism if the pinch rollers don't go up and down freely when lifted. I'd recommend you try these fixes yourself before sending the unit out for repair. Hope this helps.
He's right about that! Try to move the pinch rollers by hand... if you feel a lot of resistance, the bearings have gooped up. The oil or grease they used turned to bubble gum in these. In the video here, you see him using a heat gun to get the bearing assemblies free and off the machine... I often use one of my hotter solder irons, or the torch of my butane iron, but carefully. The real reason this happens in this and older decks in different areas, is that this is a high stress bearing, it's also very tight with extremely narrow tolerances, since any wiggle or fudge, would make calibration less exact... hence they are the high performance high precision bearings and need that attention to engage the heads reliably. Download the manual from tape heads, and go to town. It'll take you a few tries to reassemble the first time, maybe, but it's not that bad, once you've cleaned the bearings with naphtha or a similar solvent and oiled or greased them. Whatever you do, don't cheap out on the lube! Get the good stuff and maybe only do this once!
There's also a chance that your solenoid rubber boot has turned to goop... that's easier. Not sure if they make the boot for those anymore, but also not convinced I ever needed the boots on any of my decks... unless you live in a rock quarry I don't see much dust and crud getting up in them. And of so, clean and oil again.
I don't disagree with your comments; however, the subject of this video is back tension repair. Cleaning filthy pinch rollers, replacing stretched capstan belts, nor adjusting pinch roller pressure have provided the level of success with eliminating tracking problems as this adjustment.
