I hope everything works out well with your surgery and your move to middle school. I will miss your elementary school.vlogs, but I love your outfits. You will continue to be my "teacher style" fashion icon. I look forward to see how your journey goes to middle school. 38 days until I have to take my room down. Not looking forward to it at all.
Thank you! I will be so relieved when the surgery is over. I hope my outfits and I continue to make you proud. Can't wait to share my transition with you guys.
Wow just came across your channel from your Louis Vuitton haul & you deserve much more subscribers! Such an amazing educator to put so much time into the kids in your classroom & still create content to share here on RU-vid!!
Latanya, what exactly do you do when you film the picturebooks? Do you record yourself reading the books while putting the book under the doc cam? I'm moving from middle to 5th grade and I'd like to try something like that.
No, I show the books I own in my collection and give a brief description of the book and what I like about it. However, I have since deleted the videos I had filmed.
Greetings LaTawnya. I hope I spelled your name correctly. I just came across your channel. Glad I did. Though I'm not a teacher, I worked for five years for teachers here in Jamaica: I was the administrator for a diploma programme in education. My Dad taught at the secondary level for about five years before taking up ministerial training; his sister (my aunt) has been a teacher of many years in New York and Florida; and their sister-in-law (my uncle's wife) has taught at the basic school level (pre-K through 2nd grade here in Jamaica) for almost 35 years. Fun fact: a teacher is the first profession I wanted to pursue as a child. I've been fortunate to have some wonderful teachers from childhood up to university. Your channel seems, in a way, very familiar to me. It has always struck me that teachers/educators give so much though they often work with (so) little. It takes a special person to be a teacher who sacrifices much of the self so that others may benefit. I've also had conversations with teachers (trained and non-trained) who say it is one of the most challenging yet rewarding and joyful collection of experiences: teaching. So I tip my hat to you and thank you for sharing the highs and lows of your service. Happy belated birthday to you! Enjoy those treats you gifted yourself! You touched on so many thoughts in your unboxing video about problematic societal norms and coming to peace with your life as it is, that I am moved to share it with my 45 year old cousin who I think can relate to you. OK, enough of my epistle of a comment! 🙈 Congratulations on your new post, and best wishes for the week.
Hello and thank you for such a thoughtful comment. It sounds like you have been around educators your whole life. Please do share my video with your cousin. I know it helps me to know that I am not alone out there with some of those feelings.
Wow! From the time I started watching your classroom Setup Vlogs from last year to now! It is crazy to see time flying! I can’t wait for all of us to spend a new adventure with you next year! ❤️Aaron
Hello lovely, I’ve just subscribed to your channel and I wanted to let you know that I love your content. You are showing what it’s really like to teach everyday and it’s great to see other inspirational teachers sharing in this space. I hope you’re having a great year with your students. Happy Teaching Amy Louise Xoxoxo 🍎
I love your presentations on educational philosophies (your "TED Talks"). As I am a retired educator, they are so informative. I don't know the specifics of your upcoming surgery (not asking you to share), but I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago (in May!). I found the following website (and there's a downloadable app) to be extremely enlightening and helpful with all those concerns you spoke of in this video. Please check out www.hystersisters.com it truly is an awesome site. Even if you aren't having a hysterectomy, the preparation for surgery and recovery after are very similar to other gynecological procedures. I guarantee that your anxiety will lift somewhat if you look over the offering they have there.
Thanks for sharing the site. I am not having a hysterectomy, I am having fibroids removed, but it sounds like the site might still have some valuable information for me, so thanks again for sharing! I hope to keep my fake TED Talks coming!
Good luck on your surgery! Your team members will take of your students.. it is difficult asking for help, but take advantage of it! Will be praying for a speedy recovery
You will need help for more than just a few days after your surgery. You need to go stay with your Mom so that someone can take care of you when you get out of the hospital. I went through it and if you take the time to heal you will be glad you did.
I think my mom is going to stay a few days to start and then we are going to go from there. I am just not looking forward to being so dependent on someone. That is going to be tough.
SmartieStyle it’s ok to depend on people especially in this case. I’m having surgery in May fibroids are the devil!! I’m praying everything goes smoothly for you and me 👍🏾 practice leaning on people it’s not a bad thing 😊
I will be praying for you, La Tawnya! Also, I just started following a middle school ELA teacher and thought you might like her channel, too! It's "Ms. Lynn Reads". :-)
I had a similar surgery. The recovery was not that bad. A week after, I was shopping at Ulta 😂! No lie! You won’t be at working out like usual, but you’ll be able to go for walks with the dogs. Really take it easy the first week, and you’ll be good! I wore a belly binder for a bit after, and it was amazing!!!! The hardest part was getting up from a laying down position. You will be just fine!
That is good to know because I am truly the most anxious about the post surgery situation. I am hoping that I will not have to skip my workouts for too long. I will look into a belly binder. How did that help you?
SmartieStyle Well, my stomach muscles felt weak after the surgery since they were cut. The binder just held everything together for lack of a better explanation.
You are such an amazing teacher! Even with all of the stress you're under, you don't have a hair out of place and continue to make helpful content. I'm praying for your speedy recovery!!!
I believe you mentioned in one of your videos that you have a maid. Would you mind telling me how often she comes and if she does your entire house. I’m thinking of doing this too. Just wanted to know if it has made your life easier.
I have that same shirt with the stripes from Old Navy! 🙌🏾 I think that website is really cool? Is it a free website? I’d like to use something like that next year to communicate things with parents. I did a horrible job of that this year. I’m nervous about surgeries too. I’m afraid to have my wisdom teeth out because I’m so nervous! Lol. I’m sure it will be an easy procedure. Praying for you and thank you for being so open about the different things going on in your life ❤️
I can't believe I waited that long to wear it. The website sadly is not free. I don't remember how much it is, but I do know it is a little pricey, but it has been worth it to me. Thanks for the prayers for my surgery!
Can you take things down and bring things home little by little? I was actually looking at your desk area then you showed the classroom. Your class was so home-y kind of an extension of your home in a way. I always love the book choices! We have quite a few of the same choices. Have a wonderful week!
I have been taking things down and putting them in the pod. This week, I am going to take a little more down and see about bringing them home. Packing up a classroom is no fun.
I feel the same about not being addicted to coffee but it's part of my morning routine...when I don't have it I feel like part of my day is off. 😜 That's not addiction,right...? It must be nice to have your mom at your school.
Hope you have a speedy, painless recovery after your surgery. I had the same one many years ago and I had the same anxieties as you, but I had a phenomenal OB-GYN and she really made a difference in my recovery. I had a morphine pump, so I was able to administer pain medication as needed and didn't have to call, and wait, for the nurses to do so. My OB-GYN also made my incision as low as possible, so I could still wear a bikini and not have my scar show. My incision was also as thin as possible, and I can honestly say I have never felt self-conscious about it. The recovery was pain-free and the best part was that I immediately lost about six pounds and got to buy a few new outfits to fit my smaller waist! Wishing you a speedy recovery!
It sounds like we will have a similar experience. My doctor has the same plans for me in terms of the size and location of my incision. I am hoping to drop a pound or two as well. I think losing all of my independence is what causes me the most anxiety.

SmartieStyle Prayers for a smooth surgery and recovery. I had 2 surgeries before Christmas and it’s so stressful and so much work preparing for a sub. Hope all goes well for you!!🙏🏻
Hi- I totally understand your anxiety. I had surgery - possibly same one- a few years ago. First week was the worst as far as mobility. I pre-made two different types of soups portioned them out and froze them, I also made meatballs in sauce, grilled some chicken proportioned them out and froze those as well. It really helped to make something quick and healthy and warm. Not sure that would work for you but figured I’d share. The broth of the soups were the best!
