This is truly indicative of the concept of continuous education for all who participate, including the teachers, administrators, and the students we teach. Thank you, Katie.

This was assigned as an optional enrichment resources in Professional Knowledge, a course I'm taking at University of Virginia as part of my doctorate in education- Curriculum & Instruction. She really emphasizes the importance of student voice, differentiation, project-based learning, applied learning and learning transfer. She identifies a shared vision with the autonomy to decide how best to get there as an important condition for teachers to be successful. Lastly, she points out that learning is "a process, not an event" (Martin, 2017).

Katie, great job!!! There is so much more to the conversation and this is a paradigm shift that needs to take place in education, technology and accountability. Keep up the fight!!!

1. Student need focused feedback early and often and they should be taught how to assess their own learning 2. The most effective assessment addresses problem directed questions that faculty ask themselves 3. Course assessment an intellectual challenge and therefore motivating for the faculty help me to understand this

While I totally agree with your argument for teacher autonomy while revamping professional development, curriculum, and learning experiences, I am happy to see an iPad face down on a desk. Current educational trends have schools rushing to hand out tablets and other devices left and right with no real purpose or vision for how or why we are using them (other than the buzz term of '21st century learning'). In addition, kids screen time has now been expanded to include most of the school hours now. Is it developmentally appropriate for an elementary student to have that much screen time, instead of talking with classmates to develop social skills? With this type of technology only being around for a little over a decade, no one knows if it's really the right thing to do. Is it wrong to ask kids to know where the states are? What about multiplication facts? Is memorization completely pointless now? Should I pick up a calculator when I need to do 3 x 8, or should I ask google if Alabama is in the south? While we are so anxious to toss away old paradigms (as many should be), we need to hold on to what makes us human: connection to each other and our world.

As a veteran teacher, I absolutely agree with you. Too much electronics is not the answer. my students last year told me they preferred the books and reading in a book rather than online. I think there will be a giant switch back once the results of too much screen time are seen.

We should stop running our schools like prisons. Learning is a creative process. Ironically, education has a lot to learn.
