Keeping the older hens with good character is vital for flock health. They pass desirable behaviours to the younger chickens, making your flock act more like you desire. Plus they make great low upkeep backyard pets.

we use our oldest most docile bantam hen and she has raised all the chickens on the farm so far. It allows the babies to see a good mother at work and they sure do train the rest, every chicken I have will walk right up to any human jump right in your hand.

If sunflowers grow in your area you might consider planting a row or two. Come the big chicken roundup in Fall the dried heads can be added to your feed for the flock. Good for the birds, pretty for y'all.

haha, we recently had 2 broody ducks come back with a combined total of 26 ducklings. they are the friggin cutest things ever! we had our 3rd lady duck disappear about a week ago, so she'll probably come back with a swarm of her own as well haha! we have a couple older isa reds that we keep around because of their personalities (chickenalities??) as well. they dont lay anymore, but they will literally run up to you when they see you coming, and follow you around until you go do something else haha. all the silkies are now apparently trained to the sound of my truck, so when they hear it coming, they swam it. they also follow it down the driveway haha! they associate the truck with food because they are my first stop in the morning, and as soon as i park the truck, i give them their feed haha! cheers Morgan, have a great day!

Runner ducklings are just naturally much more skittish than most goslings, I've found. Goslings can be very friendly. I am testing out raising goslings and ducklings together in the same brooder this year, hoping it helps the ducklings learn to not be so afraid. Seems like it's working well so far. 🙂

I just had some observations I wanted to point out 😊. This is all just my opinion... I noticed in this video that anytime Toby would stand next to you, whether it was for your attention or not. Abby would position herself in between you and Tony, mostly to seek attention from you, and almost every time you would give her attention by petting her. Whether it wasn't on purpose or was by choice. Petting is a form of reward for a dog, so you are rewarding her needy, attention seeking behavior. I'm only saying this because on a previous video, you spoke about how Toby has changed since getting Abby, so I thought I'd mention this. I hope you are having a good day! The baby cobra chickens are growing so fast!

Introducing the next batch of babas to their older siblings certainly went better than the yearly introduction of the goslings to the adult flock - which always puts me in mind of prison movies and survival of the fittest, and makes me a bit sad when I see the little babas living in their little utopia so peaceful and content - and knowing what's coming next will be a beat down and much chasing and pecking and everyone being really mean!

I have free-range chickens and was missing one hen. Found her this weekend. Sitting on 16 eggs over by the portable building. Debating on pulling the chicks once they start hatching in a week or so. Out of the last batch of 7, only 2 survived. 4 got picked off in a few hours (possibly crow), and one was sickly. The Welsummers don't seem to be as attentive to large broods. OK with just a couple, though. Out of 10 chicks that hatched in 3 nests, I have 4 left, and 3 are roos. My luck. That Cuckoo Maran roo is now penned up. Need to catch the other 3 young Maran/Welsummer roos, too. Want to change breeds so I can keep any pullets out of this batch. I have 4 cochins separate (my set of weird chickens). Two turned out to be frizzles. They are in my small grow-out pen now, so they need a new coop. Going to make a better grow-out pen that is more snake-proof. Lost one cochin to a rat snake. Rat snakes are my biggest predator. Even killed a full-grown broody hen after he got all her eggs.

I think the coyotes would have to be desperate to try to get to your pigs, and based on what you've shared with your camera traps, easy prey is plentiful, and since you leave much of the land alone there is plenty of other things for the coyotes and bears to forage. I think worst case a bear might break through your lines just to eat the pigs food, assuming the pigs don't completely eat everything you give them, which I'm sure they do.

He mentioned the mess with Abby’s breeder is something he may have handled differently knowing what he does now about breeding and breeders and what a mess it can be publicly stating things here on social media. I am a dog breeder and believe you me it can be quite a can of worms to get into with animal breeders. It’s a big political mess including religion and politics! Does not make for good dinner table talk. I imagine cattle breeders are very similar. 😮😮 imho
@Shibalvr
@Shibalvr Год назад
Also be aware their are strict legal contracts created and signed for most pure bred animals. He breeders have their life long reputations on the line and those of their pups they spent their lives striving towards. I am a preservation dog breeder of Japanese Shiba Inu. That has strict rules set not only by Japan but the Parent Clubs in America Nationally and statewide. We have strict health rules and codes and standards and codes of ethics we must abide by. Most people have no clue what breeding animals is about. I did not 40 years ago. I got educated quickly!

Looking forward to seeing the next area you plan out for them. I'd love to come apprentice on your farm. I've been to Vermont and it's like the best parts of Michigan. There's a lot of farmland near me which I'd love to be able to one day farm the way you do. I just saw a farm selling goat milk, $8 per half gallon. I've run restaurants before and I'd love to have goats, pigs, and birds to feed kitchen & table scraps. I've home brewed before, too. Local breweries give spent grain to cattle farms.
