I don’t think Abby “gave up” when she came back after seeing the aerial predator. Rather, I think Toby and Abby were doing exactly what a team of livestock guardians should do; one goes out to search and make sure the threat has left the area, while one stays back with the livestock to make sure they won’t be unattended and vulnerable to predators. This is why having 2 or more livestock guardian dogs together is important. Toby is older and more experienced, so he probably went out to search, where he’d possibly encounter a predator while Abby stayed back with the livestock. It may have seemed like she gave up since the birds are mostly all safe in the hoop house, but you had opened the door and let them out. This kind of behaviour would be very advantageous in the summer when all the birds are roaming around outside.

I have a suggestion for you to consider. The area with all the cedar? Have you considered hiring a couple of young guys to come in and clear cut that all except for a swath to the north and west? It would give you a protected area to winter the cattle out of the prevailing winter winds. The neat thing about cedars is if they are cut off at ground level, they won't grow back. You could seed that area this Spring or Fall, depending how fast you move on this. Rotating the cattle through there even if all you are doing is feeding hay will help to increase the nutrients and kick start the grass. What you do with the cedars is up to you. You could sell them as fence posts, or firewood or work a deal with the guys who cut them down. Maybe they would take them off your hands. They might know a market for them, give you a percentage. The brush could be piled up for rabbit habitat. It could be supplied with water pretty easily and would give you more pasture close to the existing infrastructure.

Morgan for Love of God, please just feed your cats first thing and save yourself so much hassle. My Lighthouse cat was notorious for coming into my bedroom and demanding that I feed her first before the dog and even myself. So I will appreciate the abilities of cats to harass you. That, and please get a catflap with a magnetometer so that your outdoor cats can come in and out as and when they want to. Abby has come on a treat since you got her. She is certainly turning into a very big girl. It’s interesting that Pablo doesn’t take any shit from her at all when she’s being an idiot. He is a very hard core cat. People forget that it’s not just coyotes another small predators that the dogs chase off, but also other avian predators. I wish more people would realise what they getting into when they get a guardian dog, but the benefits as well they can have on peoples homesteads.

A weirdly effective makeshift brush setup I used to see all the time when I lived in upstate NY -- clusters of carpet brushes / old car snow brushes / push broom heads clustered together and attached to barn walls and fences. Looks crazy, and I'm guessing they wear out super quick, but cheaper than getting more "real brushes" and easier than rearranging all the cattle supplies.

I have two pekins (f) Duchess and Sugar, and one mallard mix duck (m) Coffee who looks full mallard, all are siblings. The girl's eggs are beautiful when I candle them, they have a distinct spiral pattern in the shell. I also feel so privileged to be able to hold and hug a mallard duck when he lets me catch him. Fortunately he never flies away from his favorite sister Sugar, because we live in the midst of a bunch of duck clubs, he is one lucky duck in a private pond with 2 beautiful girls. I bet that your giant egg might be a double yoker. Early in the season (or first timers getting started) is when I get yokeless Fairey eggs, or double yolk eggs...the hen's systems sometimes take a minute to sort out the egg assembly line :)

You made this more interesting by focusing on the eggs. Just feeding the animals is getting so boring. Add info like this egg info. You could talk about different feeds, and why you use them. Emphasize more about different breeds. Maybe one breed an episode. History of the different breeds. You will have more to talk about when building the barn starts. Maybe discuss one breed per show that would otherwise be just boringly feeding the animals until you start on the barn.

They are 90 lbs each respectively + or - a few and a lethal dose of chocolate consensus is an ounce per pound which means they would have to eat 90 ounces plus which is approx. 6 lbs of chocolate each for a lethal dose of chocolate. Hence, that little chocolate will have zero effect in reality. I once took my dog to the vet because he ate a snickers bar. The vet laughed and said bet he liked it too, huh. Small dogs would be the ONLY exception but still that little wouldn't hurt them either.

Here's a story about catching female dog urine that's funny if it doesn't happen to you... my husband has always handled this part of vet stuff. One day I happened to be there when he was taking the dogs for a walk and saw him grab a large, deep but narrow ladle (the kind one uses for canning with a pour spout on the front) and asked him why he needed the ladle for a dog walk. He then told me how fantastic it was for catching uine! And because of the pour spout, he could pour it into the container the vet had given him. Horrified that he had been using a kitchen tool I use frequently to catch URINE - and from a very sick dog, too- he told me that it was okay, he put it in the dishwasher. With the rest of our dishes! It's now the dedicated dog urine ladle and he washes it in a bucket in the wash tub. Urine! And in the dishwasher! He's lucky I love him! 😂 😂 😂😮😂 😂 😂

Urine frome a healthy animal is sterile and the dish machine detergent will break down any molecules of the urine so it will have no effect on the cleanliness of the dishes. So I would agree with your husband on this. What you are feeling is purley psycological.

We have 6+ year old rescued ducks…two gray/white hens and one mallard drake. The hens never really laid consistently even though we have had them over five years. About a month ago we saw a few eggs scattered around the pen then one day I spotted a large nest of probably 20 eggs under a raised co-op inside their pen and a few days later the ladies evidently had split the nest somehow into two different locations and each started setting. This is extremely weird because they have never done this before. Today I was feeding up and spotted either 3 or 4 little yellow heads peaking out from one of 🦆! Any ideas on why our ducks have waited over six years to start raising a family of their own? I’m very familiar with broody chicken hens but I honestly didn’t ever think our ducks would go broody. Blessings from the Little Chicken Ranch

Good to know Lyme isn’t an automatic death sentence… My dogs are active and always get a tick or two on them…. I find them by showering them with affection and always feel them eventually and do a simple trick to get them off… rub them round and round in one direction and they get dizzy and let go and then I squish them to death and throw them out in the sink or trash. This year I’m trying out a flea and tick ultrasonic device that clips onto their collars that is supposed to last 8-12 months… biggest concern has been if water will short them out… but Guinness went for a light swim yesterday and it survived… so far lol If anyone has experience with these tick devices and whether they work to any extent feel free to let me know… I got them to save on preventative over the counter meds that you apply to the skin every month.🤷🏻‍♂️

You’ve gotten a bit of the Mary-marry-merry merger, which is unusual for New England. I think the next to last time you said “fairy egg”, it sounded like a clear northeastern fairy (rhyming with Mary), but the other times it was borderline between fairy and ferry, and at first, I couldn’t tell which it was. And for people who think they sound the same, don’t worry about it. It’s a common merger that’s becoming the dominant pronunciation in the US.

Morgan has officially won the "feud" with the breeder once and for all, if there were still any doubters about who was right and who was wrong. A properly bred Maremma (Abby isn't fully grown yet but already bigger than the acceptable breed standard) wouldn't be as large as she is. Now, since she is a working dog and not a show dog it doesn't matter much, but it undermines the breeder's claims.

Morgan, please consider putting some water in the dog kibble and let it sit for a few minutes to soak up the water. This is much better for the dogs stomach than if he just had to drink alot of water afterwards and the kibble swells up inside the stomach

Meh. If they have plenty of water it’s fine dry. It’s also better dry for their teeth.

Morgan you might want to double-check because as far as I know, and I just looked it up as well, but chocolate is bad for all animals including chickens.

Hold the halter way up by the face? I didn't realize it was done the opposite way from horses. With horses you have more control, and more safety, with a longer lead rope, holding by the face is usually a sign of somewhat poor horsemanship.
