Can just imagine the hurt and pain of these missionaries who were conveniently sent off on missions abroad coming back home and finding out their wives were secretly married and sealed to Joseph Smith.
@@michaelparks5669You just called me a Liar?? Was I alive in the mid 1800s? You embicile. What the fk you on? I said imagine. How would you feel if your wife was secretly married off while you went on mormon mission at that time?
In the 1950s my mormon convert mother said that polygamy was only done in Utah because of hard times & dead husbands, & was only a kindness to "take care of" the women. Even as a little child I knew that was BS & asked her if she would want my father to do that. Lots of scrambling excuses about how now it would not be necessary.
I am going to settle the lack of children by other “wives” debate as politely as I can …. back door only for the other “wives” I hope that is polite enough. Remember Occam’s razor the simplest explanation.
This is still one of my favorite episodes ever. To see poor Eve grapple with the lies in real time was fascinating and heartbreaking and shocking. Such a brave young woman, and so well-done.
As a child I was told that the polygamy was due to all the widows left from the civil wars…and that it wasn’t widespread. I haven’t been Mormon for 25 years and I only recently found out that wasn’t true lol
I knew this from my teenage years I read the list of joseph smith wives in the historical record and my grand parents told me about their polygamist parents.
I remember when I was convert baptized way back in the 70's and being told that there was polygamy practiced when the pioneers were coming out west because there were so many more women and it was for their protection.
I was on my mission in 1978 to 1980. When I was in the MTC, they didn't discuss polygamy. They basic said stay away from church hisory and deep doctrine. Stay on tract teaching the discussions. Stay away from anything that was controversial.
As mentioned in the video, Joseph Smith's polygamy was recently admitted by the church in a Gospel Topic Essay "Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo" that is published on the LDS website. That essay has a lot of numbered "sidenotes" linked in the text. Sidenote 24 says that careful estimates put the number of wives between 30 and 40.
Watching this and thinking about the story the two of you shared where you changed Eve’s phone background to discourage her from getting a tattoo when you were still a TBM. Even though you were being a bit judgy… it’s still hilarious!! I couldn’t help but laugh if I had been Eve in that scenario.
On the question about the "lack of offspring" from these relations. An elderly friend of mine who was born in 1930's proceeded once to tell me about his past sex life. He said that back when he was young, having sex outside of marriage was not by itself considered bad. But what was considered bad was if the woman got pregnant. So he said that a lot of the sex was of the anal type. That was a way of contraception back then. And considering what Joseph Smith wrote about some other ehm cases, I have started wondering if he may have been bisexual. Or attempted to cover a homosexuality by having a lot of wives.
Eve! Why does your soul bring my soul so much comfort? Love any video with you! Had to edit this several days later when I realized I must have been a little tipsy when I wrote it the first time…
I've been noticing polygamy deniers dropping comments and links in several exmo comments lately, it's a desperately grasping conspiracy theory that seems to be showing up more smh 🤦♀
that wasn't available until relatively recently, the ads church trying to get ahead of their members hearing from outside. inoculation.also that isn't stated in church.
@@chlyri Not advertising is not equivalent to trying to bury. The vast ignorance of the members is only evidence of the laziness of the members. The information has been available in church publications for decades, and the church has always encouraged its members to study and educate themselves. To expect the church to broadcast parts of the history which they themselves don't fully understand, and which some find to be controversial is lunacy. Do you see the Pope leading out with the former practice of selling indulgences?
I’m sure there’s been others out there somewhere, but Mormons are basically the main ones in North America. If there’s others it’s not part of the doctrine, it’s just something they chose to do.
I will say, I believe that the “Emma wanted her son, Joseph III to be the successor prophet” was a narrative distilled by Brigham Young as propaganda to garner negative sentiment against Emma because she was making it difficult for the church to legally possess Joseph’s properties and belongings. According to “Mormon Enigma” she was not in favor of Joseph III to lead any branch of Mormonism. I love John, but he isn’t falible.
you can believe in polyamory and still scorn situations where polygamy is clearly an issue of manipulation and pressure. god, you defenders really like to grasp at straws.
Are you calling the church a liar then? Cause this came from them. Listen to the source they cited. Pick one. Either it’s true or the church is lying. Which one?
@@TheJordanK I will not pick one. Silly. Why should I? 😁 One can be true and the other false. The church is lying. Heavily, they have lied, since nearly the foundation. They use vain flattery, to take away money from the poor. In their leadership is actual evil people ... Gross, awful, people... Brigham young built his empire on the backs of slaves. Liar, liar, liar. He was gross. The lie that took it from "Gods church" to "under condemnation " was polygamy. (Which came about from taking the BOOK OF MORMON LIGHTLY. Which specifically warns against this ) This was the law introduced that killed the spirit and mojo of the whole damn thing, for it murdered the hearts of the wives (an important asset for thriving in society, as it turns out 😉) and the children. It also was the opposite of the "image of God " Man and female, created I them." One wife, one husband. God promised his people, the Israelites, of the covenant, this land. Long ago, he planned for them to inherit it. The New Covenants were written a long time ago, for these days. So yes, I can believe in the book or Mormon, and also that Brigham Young was the first to live the law of polygamy, for the New Covenants speak against it 😊 And Joseph's wife never let adultery" near her tongue. Why would a bitter wife defend her husband to her death? Why would she love him heart and soul if he was being unfaithful? God does not speak in vain. Yes, the church lies, but God does not. Men, flesh, do fail, in every area, but God does not. He said he'd restore his gospel, and he has. He's vindicated hia servant already. I'm not here to do that. I'm hear to bind this though, for it is finished. God does not speak in vain, and it doesn't matter what you, or Nuance, thinks. God thinks what he thinks, and there's less kinks in his thinks, then any thinker who thinks.
@@TheJordanK Yes, I am calling the church a liar. I can in fact pick one to be true, and one to not be true. The Church has lied since it's foundation, for it is the abominable church. The church lies, but God does not. He promised the Israelites this land. He promised his people, he'd bring again Zion. He promised he'd restore his gospel, and he has. Polygamy was the very lie, that began with the second president, that brought the church from "God's own" to under condemnation. This was because they took their book lightly, which warns heavily against having more then one wife. (wives are important assets to society, as it turns out 😉) so breaking their hearts was a no no. Now, God's servant has already been vindicated. I am not here to do that. But God has began a work again, and he now gathers those with humble spirits and meekness, out from Babylon. Emma never said she lived polygamy. She defended her husband against it to her DEATH and the evidence and testimonies came after, not before. Why would a bitter wife, with a husband commiting adultery, defend him, and love him heart and soul? Never a word against him? Joseph is innocent, but the church is evil.
@@CarahBurrell If she thought he was a fraud, and using his position for pleasures of the flesh, surely she would not have been afraid of things he "revealed"
The Church is wrong in taking the word of some historians. Joseph had only one wife. He had only chidren from Emma. Bigham Young started the practice of Poligamy.
