Dr. Jonathan Tarbox answers a viewer’s question about how to teach teens that are high functioning. Do we tell them what the point of the lesson is? Do we tell them what the expectation of a response is and how do we get to true generalization?
Autism Live is a production of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), headquartered in Tarzana, California, and with offices throughout, the United States and around the globe. There are many gray areas when it comes to giving instructions to a high- functioning autistic teen and your own expectations from him. I'm still finding different approaches to help my sons be more successful. Thanks for the good advice.

Do not let what others say make you feel a certain way. Take in what you heard and learn from it but don't let it make you feel a certain way. Practice taking in information peacefully. You are not disabled and I am proud of you :)

Please do not make the mistake I did in highschool, I have autism & ADHD & I was a bit bullied but not bad because I often defended my self even though I did not like being violent, most of the time I was not violent I just expressed my feelings off anger & would confront them to back off in a respectable manner. Even though my tone and face showed I was not happy. I eventually got out of that class because I got embarrassed from the name callings. Even though I was intelligent, I just struggled to be calm and still around people. I often would get distracted in class so I may e.d teacher would get me at a specific hour all from elementary to HS & taught me communication and it helped me get along and talk with others around me. I am thankful but wish I stayed in that way I could have got more help.....

My 14 year is high functioning autistic and when I tell him why I'm working with him on certain things but he says I think he's stupid. So I give him examples of why I feel like this is something to work on based on the things he does and he says he doesn't do that and doesn't need any help. How do I come back from that? I really hates that he feels that but what can I do if he doesn't want me to help him and he doesn't want to be different. 😢

@@jeffmaggard3694 that's the autism equivalent of "I'm not racist; I have black friends": "I think all autistic kids are one particular way because I spend time with one autistic kid".
