In this Hyfindr Tech Talk between Steven and Claudio, the topic of discussion is focused on understanding the technology that makes the hydrogen economy work, in this case detecting leakages and flames. Claudio presents four different technologies that can be used to detect and protect assets and people from the dangers of hydrogen leakage, the four technologies were in three different products brought with him: the Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector (UGLD), a conventional gas detector and a flame detector. Claudio explains how each technology works and the benefits they provide. The Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector (UGLD) is able to detect hydrogen leakage and can cover an area of up to 28 meters, meaning that even if a leakage is not within sight of the detector, it can still detect it. This detector uses an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to distinguish between different background noises and hydrogen leakages to avoid false alarms. The conventional gas detector, which is a catalytic technology, works by measuring the %LEL when hydrogen hits it. This detector can also detect hydrogen up to 1000 PPM with a different technology call electrochemical principle. The flame detector uses infrared and ultraviolet sensor to detect hydrogen flames. It is tuned to a wavelength of 2.95 micrometers, which is different from hydrocarbon flame emissions, and is able to detect the hydrogen invisible flames.
