I like the idea that your having a discussion about this stuff and your willing to talk about this stuff. Humble enough to say you don’t know everything and could be wrong. If more people had a view like that and was able to talk to each other instead of getting offended because you don’t agree the world would be a much better place and happier too. Keep up the talks. I seem to learn a little something or at least start thinking about things a little different then before.
Excellent stuff George.. MOST of the failures we see with HD motors comes from inexperienced mechanics and riders tinkering with the motor. Harley engineered it as a "system" of parts, assembled to work together. When anyone tries to make it operate outside of the engineered parameters, all relationships with the factory end right then and there. We used to study components for wear patterns just as you do.. and if you do it enough, and pay close attention, you can't help but realize that these engineers know what they're doing. We always tried to evaluate the whole driveline as a "system".. whenever we make more power, we were careful to evaluate where we were transferring the stress to.. and with a touring harley, which is designed to be comfortable and smooth.. everything is isolated in rubber, this also keeps shock value down for the drivetrain. As you know, ALL that shock value becomes an issue as we make power.. and begin to "put stronger links in a weak chain" so to speak... EVERY item we change exposes the next item.. the bike has to be "leveled up" as a system, front to back, in order to maintain reliability. Here's an example: When designing the compensator, HD knew damn well they had a cush - drive sprocker, weak clutch springs and a rubber mounted motor to fall back on... so with the low shock value in mind, they made the compensator out of a hard, inexpensive material.. the hardness insures the customer will have many many miles of trouble free service from the component... BUT soon as Mr Backyard mechanic goes to chain drive, power-shifting, and a real clutch.. and decides to start whacking the throttle open (AND closed... same effect on components.. just in reverse) well, now all of a sudden that hardness value on the compensator seems like a bad decision by Harley-Davidson... doesn't it? But it wasnt.. they made the RIGHT decision.. WITHIN THE SYSTEM they designed! Same with high lift cams, same with compression changes, stroke changes, etc etc.. Your video is a BRILLIANT example of how and why a factory HD motor looks like new despite the abusive riding environment of the Police Dept.. they didn't MODIFY the system that HD engineered.. and they maintained it as HD recommended.. period. Thank you for your video, a fantastic "autopsy" of a well maintained M8.. I loved every minute!
Couldn't agree more with you on the build quality of the stock M8 parts. On my build I reused the stock lifters and oil pump. Even used the stock pushrods as I used mild cams and everything runs perfectly. I also had little to no wear on the parts as I inspected them. I think most of the hype on oil pumps and other parts is just marketing.

Hello Bryce, that means i have to get the billet S&S anti rotation cuff if i wnna use your star 30/30 cam on my m8 107 cauze you said anything higher 480 lift will lift and damage the plastic OEM cuffs?
I like your approach and logic. Like you I am a guy that is your age with opinions based on a lot of hands-on experience and machining parts. Interested to see your take on the cylinder heads, especially the bad side of the exhaust port.
