Brownells Gun Techs™ Caleb and Steve are about to go wild! They are kicking off a new multi-episode series on wildcatting for the AR-15. A wildcat cartridge is any cartridge that's not mass produced by a commercial ammunition manufacturer. Handloaders develop wildcats to fill a need not covered by an existing factory round. A lot of popular cartridges started out as wildcats. Check out our Quick Tip episode, "Caleb's Wild About Wildcat Cartridges" (link below) for more on the wonders of wildcatting.
Nowadays, you do have more factory options for the AR-15 than just 5.56 / .223. There's .300 Blackout, 6.5mm Grendel, 6.8mm SPC, .224 Valkyrie, and even AK rounds. But what if you want something different? Early non-standard AR-15 cartridges that started as wildcats like .450 Bushmaster and .50 Beowulf were cool but used expensive proprietary cases. If you plan carefully, you can use the case for an existing cartridge that fits the AR-15's magazine well. Let's say you want to wildcat something with a .257 caliber bullet.....
Caleb has converted an AR-15 upper receiver to the .25 GPC wildcat round (GPC = General Purpose Cartridge). The .25 GPC uses a 6.8mm Remington SPC case necked down to take a .257" bullet. With its narrower diameter, the projectile will have a higher ballistic coefficient and achieve higher velocities than the 6.8mm bullet - both good things. The higher capacity of the 6.8 SPC case means there's room for a little more "fuel" to motivate that bullet, too. That roomy 6.8 SPC case is actually very adaptable for developing wildcat cartridges for the AR.
Caleb will be loading Starline 6.8 SPC brass with precision CNC-machined solid copper match / competition bullets from Cutting Edge Bullets. What about the dies? Hornady will still make custom dies for you, and Caleb has a set from them for .25 GPC.
And the rifle? Caleb's new .25 GPC wildcat AR has a barrel from Mad Dog Weapon Systems (MDWS), a company that specializes in AR wildcatting. If you have a lathe, a mill, the right reamer, and machining skills, you can make your own barrel from a blank. If you're not so equipped, the folks at MDWS will make a custom AR-15 barrel for you and even configure its gas system.

It’s great to see your adventure into wildcatting. It’s pretty easy with some machine shop knowledge. I made one in 7mm TCU back when I was in school to be a gunsmith a decade and a half ago. I used that cartridge a lot when I shot IHMSA and after that competition kindly died off I had a ton of brass and no barrel, so made one.

genuinely wish 6x45mm(6mm/223) was popular, quite similar to 6mm arc where you only need a barrel change or alternatively 6.8 spc

MDWS is a great company to deal with. When it comes to wildcatting the AR-15/AR-10 platform, they have it covered from the 17 Stinger to the 500 WTF. I put together a 358 YETI a few years ago when PA looked like it was finally going to allow auto loaders to hunt with. Loaded with Speer 180 gr bullets @ 2500 fts or Hornady's excellent 200 gr FTX @ 2400 fps it's easily a 200 yard Deer/Elk rifle. Making cases for the YETI is the same process as making 300 BO except you use LC 7.62X51 surplus brass. I fire formed my cases with bulk 158 gr 357 magnum bullets and still shoot them for cheap plinking fun. Good luck with your project Caleb. Looking forward to the reports.

But why not just chamber in .358 Winchester? or really different in .338 federal?
@gundoc4u
@gundoc4u Год назад
@@mattpie595 Because the 358 Win or the 338 Federal are both 308 length cartridges and would require an AR-10 rifle to fit. The 358 YETI is short enough to fit in a standard AR-15 size platform.

@JaronActual
@JaronActual Год назад
Not quite that much. The 257 Bob has way more case capacity than the 25 GPC and will be about 200fps faster with the same barrel length. But the 25 GPC can fit in an AR-15 action length, which has its own advantages. Nearly all of MDWS wildcats are intended for the AR-15 and focus on compatibility with existing parts. A lot of them come within 85%-90% of the velocity of larger .308 cartridges, like the 6mm Mongoose vs the .243 Win.

On the Maddog weapon systems forums there is good load data. I’ve started trying a bunch of different loads on there and the folks there really know what they’re doing. Yes it’s not published in a book but I trust the data for these particular wildcats because the creators are really smart guys.

Noticed that the brass and bullets for the 25 GPC are “out of stock”. What would be the advantage of this round over the 6.5 Grendel or the 6mm ARC? I jumped on the Grendel bandwagon when it first came out and have brass for both large and small primers before it was standardized. Average of .57 moa with Accurate 2520. Haven’t started on the 6mm ARC but am interested in it.

Still waiting to see if Sig's hybrid case comes to the 5.56 and see where the extra pressure will do for wildcats based on that. Also, why no 234 or 237 caliber projectiles. It would only take a 92gr projectile to get to a sectional density of .24 im thinking less than 100 gr to get to .6 g1 bc with traditional lead bullets... i think im dreaming now lol

AR-15 or AR-10 platform for that 25 GPC?
@JaronActual
@JaronActual Год назад
Nearly all MDWS wildcats are AR-15 platform. The 25 GPC is a 6.8 SPC case. MDWS does a whole line of .223 and 6.8 based wildcats. They also have what they call "fat cats," which are .308 cases necked down and cut back to fit in the AR-15 magazine and action length. Those ones do require a special bolt, though.
@chadlowery1098
@chadlowery1098 Год назад
I’m curious and a complete moron when it comes to creating a wildcat. Isn’t this cartridge gonna be extremely similar to 6.5 Grendel? Does the 6.8 SPC case hold more powder?
@JaronActual
@JaronActual Год назад
Case capacity between 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel are indeed very similar. The Grendel case has a wider rim and a lot more body taper, though. Converting the SPC to a GPC case flares the shoulder and gives a little more case capacity. And a lot of people still don't like Grendel bolts and how much material is removed from the locking lugs. SPC brass also fits STANAG magazines better than Grendel does. It's a po-tay-to / po-tah-to thing. If you already had an AR BCG with a 6.8 bolt, than you can just swap a barrel and use the same brass you already have for a different bullet ( the GPC wildcats come in 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 30 cal ).
@marcrenken4308

This sounds like a .277 Wolverine?
@JaronActual
@JaronActual Год назад
Close. The WLV is a .223 case necked up and cut back for .277/6.8 projectiles. It can also do subsonics almost as well as 300 BLK. All the GPC wildcats are based on the 6.8 SPC case. You get more powder capacity, but you need a 6.8 bolt ( and idealy magazines too ).

@JaronActual
@JaronActual Год назад
@@joshuagibson2520 Why use wildcat rounds at all, or why this particular wildcat? Yes, there are tradeoffs. You won't be able to buy ammo for it at a store ( usually ). So you have to be able to load your own ammo. Depending on how new or common that wildcat is, you may or may not already have a lot of established load data to follow. The upside is you get a round that ( hopefully ) meets your needs or gives you something unique to play with. A lot of rounds that are mainstream now started off as wildcats not too many years ago.
