You could try seeing if there are any lapidary clubs/gem guilds or anything similar near where you live, so you can either join or attend a workshop. I know someone who carves jade (as a hobby) and was able to use good equipment by joining local lapidary clubs over the years, while they where setting up a home workshop to use. Some lapidary clubs also have field trips to go fossicking for materials, so you might not have to find and buy all of your materials if that is the case with a club you join. Good luck with finding one. If you can't get experience with equipment, you could try with learning the basics of selecting and then working with certain materials. If you're working with different materials or anything that could potentially have flaws (e.g. fractures in stone), you need to know what to choose and how to work with it. I don't know much about minerals and steels etc, but in the case of stone specifically, being able to identify fractures, the characteristics (such as brittleness, grain size, etc) of materials is very useful, otherwise it could shatter while you're working or be an extremely fragile product. Hopefully that's helpful, but honestly I don't know much myself. Good luck.
