I've been having issues with the idle / off load running of my 11 hp snow king Tecumseh on my Murray Select Snow blower. In this video I show you how to fix this issue before you go through the whole carb. Thanks for watching
My blower w the identical engine has surged from the day i bought it 15 yrs ago til a month ago, i saw a vid here on youtube, i removed my pilot like you just did, cleaned it out with a torch tip cleaner, but their was nothing in it, so i put it back together, nothing has changed , happened to see another vid on here, the guy said drill it out a little bit, well smallest drill bit i had was a 1/16" , he said it does'nt even matter if the brass pc comes out, it wont hurt anything, so i thought well wont run without the choke for 15 yrs. its worth a try, i popped the tiny little brass pc out, runs perfect without the choke , after 15 yrs i told the guy thankyou, he said the factory makes them with such a small pilot because of California emissions 👍
I'm glad this video is still available. My snowblower was surging last year. I followed this video and it made a huge difference. Kind of amazing that such a tiny clog has such a big effect...
thanks for posting this. I took the long way around. Took my entire Tecumseh carb apart and cleaned out with carb cleaner. Went back after watching this video and cleaned the screw pin holes with a wire from my wire brush. Worked like a charm! Thanks again.
Just an FYI. My sno king was surging. I tried the above fix, it didn't change. I used carb spray and discovered a vacuum leak at the gasket between carb and intake.I tightened the two bolts and problem was fixed. Thanks for your video
As with the previous people, this worked like a charm for me as well. After this, ran without any choke and was able to turn down the throttle all the way down and it ran smooth. It was so bad, just to get the snowblower back to the garage, I had to mess with the choke; enabling then disabling. Thank you!
Thanks GrissonCat...just followed your Tecumseh 10ho fix along with a couple of other RU-vid HM100 Jet fixes and my generator is running like new ! My Emulsion tube was missing to O ring toward the center of the Carb.... my bowl bolt jet needed to be drilled a tiny tiny bit and the air mixture jet was sealed tight... just ran a very thin piece of wire thru it and reassembled.... I was going to just this 5000/6250 watt generator last week....but you guys save me a $500.00 dollar bill ! Great stuff !
Thank God I found this video. My snowblower is doing exactly the same thing right after I just finished blowing the snow today here in NY. Thanks for the video
Perfect! Exactly the problem I was having with my old Bolens with Tecumseh Snowking 10HP engine. I really didn't see any gunk but boy does she run great now. Low idle RPM is nice and steady now and doesn't stall out. Took 10 minutes to complete in my garage. I did remove the bracket that is somewhat blocking acess to the air screw (removal not shown in the video, bracket is front and center at the 3:36 mark). Also, my plastic cover over the air screw was white, not black as shown in the video. i guess they come in all sorts of colors. Thank you TheGrissomCat for saving me a trip to the mechanic!!
This week (3/2015) I had the exact issue on my Craftsman snow-thrower which has a Tecumseh 9HP engine. I watched your video - found and removed a super small carbon granule that was blocking the center hole of the air jet. Thanks for the informative video. FYI - my snow-thrower did not come with a fuel filter but I plan on adding one before putting it away for the summer.
I didn't have a little black rubber tip on my screw (maybe an older model?), but I followed your directions and removed the screw and cleaned out the little holes with a fine wire. Worked like a charm! Thanks!
Thanks so much for this video. Fixed my snow king. Canadian winters!!! Not as much snow where I am in Alberta but love it when things work. Thanks again.
I figured that was my problem too. I didn't want to take that little peice out for fear of losing it in the snow and such in my shed. I'm inspired by this video; your shed looks just mine. you either have the hands of a surgeon, or you don't drink as much as me. Well done for sure!
Thank you so much for posting this vid. My snowblower had the same problem (11 HP Tecumseh). Performed the cleaning of the air jet pin as you showed and problem solved. You've saved my a lot of money over having it repaired at a shop.
Grissom Cat, thank you! I have a generator with 10hp Techumseh engine. The air mix screw was capped off with a gray cap, the same color as the carburetor body. I missed it! I had been recently given this genset that didn't run. I rebuilt the carb, but missed this air mix screw, so I failed to clean it thus causing the engine to "hunt." I can't thank you enough!
You are a genius. I trued everything that I could think of and I just tried this and it worked, I could never run the engine on low speed and when the choked was fully opened it sputtered and surged. Thank you so much.
GrissomCat - thanks a million for video. I lived two years with the same problem. Just wished I had run across your video before I took the time to pull and clean the carb and replace the gaskets. Based on the posts, many of us encounter the same issue with our Tecumseh engines.
I can't thank you enough for this video. I was skeptical that it would be this simple to fix but it worked perfectly and just in time...20"-30" of snow coming to Massachusetts tomorrow.
My snowblower has been behaving badly, surging just the way you described. I did what you said and now it is running great! Thanks for posting the video.
There are quite a few videos similar to this one for the Ariens snowblower, so I figured it was worth a try. Mine is only 2 years old and was surging when I started it in November. I don't know what you call that piece, but mine is red, plastic and is on top of the carburetor. It's running great now, thanks!! I love RU-vid!!
Great advice, was just what the doctor ordered for my very rough idling Craftsman. Appreciate the video, made for a very simple repair when I had a driveway full of snow and a machine that wasn't cooperating.
Thank you very much. My blower has the same problem, but the screw I pull out is black with no holes. I clean the screw and the screw hole with carburetor cleaner, and blower idles normally now. FYI the screw in the carburetor does have small holes like the one you show us. I cleaned it last year, but it did not help. Looks like for my model, both screws need cleaning to get the idling back to normal.
For others with poor eyesight, the opening from the end does not go far beyond the two holes on each side so use bright light to see the small wire used to clear the passage. Although the hole may appear "large" on the end it funnels to a much smaller size by the time it reaches the two holes. I think it helped!!! Thanks. After this why not add Seafoam to your gas which should help clear the remaining passages that are probably somewhat impacted. For the small amount of gas used each winter, why not add Seafoam every time to keep your carb clean, then remember to run the bowl dry at the end of the season. Probably never have to mess with it again. I'm totally sold on Seafoam in the gas and added to the oil at the start of each oil change.
Excellent Vid! You may like to stop at auto parts store, and buy a MIG welding tip cleaner set, only $6.00 and has about 15 different tip/file sizes for cleaning ! works awesome! Thanks for your info !
Outstanding, this piece of poo has been running lousy out of the box. Felt like dragging it down the road behind the truck. Runs better than ever now , thanks for the video. helped me out big time..!
Great video. I bought a Ariens STL 24 Deluxe last year in Jan. of 2016. Tried to start this year, first snowfall and the engine is surging with rough or no idle. Everything I have been researching tells me that something is clogging the air-jet or fowling the fuel supply. I've also read about cheap fuel line hoses supplied with these machines that should be replaced with a quality American made hose.
Very nice, thanks for the video. Engine is no longer hunting and idles beautifully. Took me longer to get the choke knob off than to get the carb shield off and the air jet out/unplugged. Just in time for another foot of snow coming next few days. God I love upstate NY.
Gees from the comments you seem to have helped dozens of people. Very cool. I have 10hp tecumseh that has a problem similar to that. Ill be attacking mine tomorow. But after watching your vid ill be attacking from a different angle than planned. Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I have been doing everything I could to make my Toro 5HP run but was ready to pull the carb off. I put a new one on 2 yrs ago and couldn't believe it was screwed up so fast. The old one was the old style carb from around 2009. It was the original one that was on it when I bought it. I wondered what that screw with the rubber cap was.You should me how to fix this new one and now it works like a champ.
I have the same blower but under a different brand name, I toke apart the carburetor and rebuilding it, still waiting to get a rebuilt kit soon. Just cleaned the same air jet like you this afternoon, my opinion is that you should try to rebuild the carburetor once and for all, cause there will be other hidden issues you might not see immediately.
After replacing the float bowl needle gasket and needle and making the float bowl adj the surging issue surfaced . Although I cleaned the port in this video with gumout I went back and cleaned it with a small steel wire which appeared to loosen a small chunk of carbon. It runs excellent now, idles, revs up with no hesitation, runs fine under load and no load at full rev. Thanks
Hey I was very impressed with the surge fix video,my snowblower was doing same thing and did what you showed on the video and is running great thanks alot for your knowledge
Some carbs have an emulsion tube above the fixed jet holding the float bowl and/or a jet with multiple holes that should also be cleaned out. There is one very very tiny hole at the end of the fixed jet that is on an angle.
If they charged you (and I assume they did), then would try to get your money back. Anybody doing this for a living ought to be able to find & clean a fuel or air flow obstruction easily! Not doing so, but still charging you... that's criminal!!
Hi , Do you happen to know what that green wire is ? it has 2 connectors on it and its 2 green wires connected together. The one on my machine is just hanging still connected together. Is it supposed to be connected somewhere. I see yours but can't tell if its connected someplace or just hanging
The idle circuit is part of the entire fuel air mixture for the engine . I notice you have a 90 degree extended elbow for the carb mount . This might atomize the fuel better than the engines that have the carb bolted direct to the engine That arrangement is problematic to get smooth engine operation in all speeds , until it's under load
That looks like the same EXACT engine on my 10 year old MTD Yard Machine Snow Blower. Same exact throttle control, Oil fill, starter and prime plunger...everything. The only thing mine doesn't have is a 'fuel shut-off valve'.
Hmmm, havent watched the video yet, but I just added a brand new Carb to the 8HP Snow King and it surges during Idle. Could it be a linkage issue? I did slightly bend the linkage when I replaced the old with the new carb.
So, my snow blower started surging right at the end of an hour of running. It was surging on idle and also under load. I put it on half choke and it ran smoothly. So, please make note it was running fine till after an hour of Operation. Do you still think that it is the same problem?
Larry Williams it's worth a shot. It's a good possibility that it's your main fuel jet is clogged but this is such a quick and easy repair it's worth a shot first before you go through the whole carb
Does that jet have a setting? Like all the way in, and then out 1 1/2 turns? Or just all the way in? Mine is doing this same thing. Thanks for the video!
Move the choke SLOWLY, too fast and it stalls. Use a hat-pin to clean holes, much stiffer. Follow-up with carb cleaner. Replace your bowl when it gets rusty, some of the rust will get lodged in the jet.
