He was one of the fathers of jazz piano in the 20th century...along with the likes of Earl Hines, Tatum, Waller, and James P Johnson. Definitely one of the giants...and playing as gracefully, elegantly, and imaginatively at this stage of his career as ever...if not even more so. This lyrical approach to "lullaby of birdland" certainly encapsulates the rich history of the development of jazz piano, of which he himself figured hugely in...from stride to swing to bebop to miles. The playing here is absolutely gorgeous! And it is uniquely Teddy Wilson.

Being a later recording the quality of reproduction is better than most but I feel that, while it's still very good, it's not as good as earlier Teddy Wilson. For example the Verve recordings, which are reasonably good quality seem to be better performances. Hard to say what's missing, perhaps a certain fire.

Are you saying thus is a recording of Teddy Wilson or someone imitating his style? My recordings of Teddy Wilson generally don’t have this clarity. One could likely transcribe this fairly accurately. I understand Teddy Wilson was still playing when sound recording quality was very good. I saw him in the late 1970s at the Copley Plaza In Boston. But his recordings that I like most are from the 1940s with Billie Holiday and Lester Young. On those, the piano sound has less clarity - I think because of equipment quality and because of clutter from the other instruments, whereas this recording is solo piano.

Where did you find this? The only solo recordings I have of his were from the very old "School for Pianists" album. I saw Teddy Wilson with Red Norvo in the early '80's, and they still sounded wonderful.

Martin Richter There are lots of piano solos by Teddy. This is from his 1983 album "The Greatest Jazz Piano". Also I recommend you his "Keystone Piano Transcriptions" and "The Complete Teddy Wilson Piano Solos". This last one has both solos and trios.

@@ER0GE any good written Teddy Wilson transcriptions out there? What would you play where he does rapidly moving 10ths in the left hand. I could not do that at speed even pre-arthritis, let alone now. But low tenths alternating with midrange chords giver a fuller sound to the stride style than single bass notes. Octaves? Thirds an octave or two higher? Rolled 10ths? (don’t think so).

@@stephenrothman6058 drive.google.com/file/d/1XmXYAnMH7UfUidYv7VHxQORTbpJZ21SP/view?usp=sharing Here's a link to my collection of Teddy transcriptions, there's plenty of them. And with regards to your question about the tenths, among the transcriptions in the file there's a Tea for Two video in which a girl made modifications of the kind you described in order to accommodate for her small hands, which could interest you. Other than octaves and thirds you can also fill with other chord notes below the melodic line note, and at times even just play the melodic line notes (Teddy also did this from time to time), but at the end of the day these are all compromises and aren't gonna sound the same.
