It doesn't improve when they move out. My daughter is 25. If my wife's phone rings at 10:30pm, I know it's another night falling asleep on the sofa without my CPAP.

This was me as a teen. If my mom was already friends with your mom, I was wary about being your friend because that meant your mom was going to tell my mom everything. For example, when I was 15, my mom was trying to get a short list of friends for me to stay with when my parents would be out of town. One of her mom friends said I shouldn't stay over at one of the houses I actually wanted to (They had 5 girls all around my age plus other kids, and I had no sisters and only 2 brothers.), claiming something about "not enough structure" in the large family's home. Instead, Mom had me stay with this woman, who then proceeded to tell my mom about every mood I was in when I'd be left at her house. Fortunately, my mom sided with me about my moods. Also fortunately, after a couple times of that, my mom found another family I could crash with on some weekends. She was friends with this mom, too, but the other mom let me stay up until all hours, actually engaged me in conversation, and treated me like another daughter instead of a house guest.

Yep. Our 19-year-old jokes that he had four moms in high school, including me. His one buddy's mom was also their science teacher in middle school, so he called her Mrs. Mom and still does. 😂

My ADHD daughter does this! But she also does all the talking like most daughters. So I guess I get the best of bith worlds! 😂

When she was very young, kindergarten or first grade, my daughter’s school had a penguin visit. I didn’t hear about it until several weeks later and when I did I said, “Sweetie, that’s exactly the kind of thing I’m asking about when I ask you how school was.” Then my running dad joke became asking her, “Did any penguins come to school today?”

True. But it's also relative to gender differences.. from hormones to learned standards and expectations. And of course, also relative to their predominate social groups. We could also take in account their age differences and development, lads do take a little longer to reach physical maturity and being more in the throes of chaotic hormonal development can leave them a little more broody and introspective, internalizing, taking longer to find their chill for a longer period of development vs girls. But in general, girls tend to have a better command of language and expression overall. And regardless of gender, most kids need some time to collect themselves after an event, such as being picked up from school. Neither tends to views their parents/guardians as people until they've become self sufficient.

I found it helped when I shifted away from questions (I think they just viewed those as an interrogation) and into occasionally nonchalantly mentioning something embarrassing that had happened to me, or casually saying something cool I'd observed in a friend or in a movie, how I felt about something a store clerk had said, etc. - but without expecting a response. Then, after it marinated in their minds, sure enough they'd later sometimes mention the thing I'd shared and comment on it with some sort of empathetic or keen observation of their own. This helped kick off some bonding, but I had to be patient and remain very casual about how I mentioned things. Also, I'd find ways to compliment them in indirect ways. But my main help came from Faber & Mazlish, who co-wrote a wonderful book re: "how to talk so teens will listen and listen so teens will talk." Their material helped me enormously (their earlier book, "How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk" was my reliable go-to over the years). Hope that helps!

Keep realizing there is a good person inside there, keep from getting too frustrated, and then yes, usually you have a more normal relationship waiting for you "on the other side" of the teenage years!
