Watching people's first reaction to this song is great. It starts off semi-mellow, then they pause the video... "Oh wow, he has a nice voice."... a few minutes later... "Oh. My. God."

I was about a third of the way through your reaction when you mentioned how good Sebastian was at expressing emotion through his vocals. Made me literally laugh out loud for a second thinking how you hadn't seen anything yet with what was coming in the later half of the song. I discovered Skid Row on April 10, 1989, when I saw them open for Bon Jovi on the Jersey Syndicate Tour in Wichita, KS. I knew nothing about the band at the time. Had heard one of their songs, "I Remember You" on the radio, but hadn't realized it was the band I was about to see until they played the song as part of that show. But 15 seconds after Sebastian unleashed his vocals on the crowd, I knew I was going to the record store and getting that album the next day. (I miss those record stores, having music available at the click of a mouse is great, but the experience of just going to the store to search for new and interesting albums is one of those things today's generation just never gets to experience) I've been to probably 70 or so concerts since then (national tours, not counting local bar shows), and that night's performance by both bands is still in the top 5 for just all around fun concerts I ever saw, and it was only the second concert I had ever been too. Great way to start a life of enjoying live music. With Skid Row you had the just raw sound and my favorite vocalist ever. And Bon Jovi's show just had the pure spectacle with they pyro, the gangplank that allowed the band to run to the back of the arena and perform songs for the people with the worse seats in the house that was up there with the times I've seen KISS and Def Leppard for the best showmanship. Great night! Skid Row's first two albums are still some of my favorites after more than 30 years. It's just a shame they couldn't keep the band together. Both the band and Sebastian are still rocking though. Sebastian just released his fifth solo album "Child Within the Man" last month.

The singer, Sebastian Bach, later did a couple Broadway musicals..one was Jeckyll & Hyde. He's an incredibly talented vocalist/performer. He's still performing.

Steven Adler was on the Celebrity Rehab TV Show back in the day... thankfully he pulled out of a VERY long drug addiction that led to him being fired from Guns 'n Roses during the peak of their career. He tours with his own band (who arguably sound BETTER than GNR do in 2023) and looks so happy back on the drum kit. Wasted Time is an astonishingly powerful song about watching one's good friend swirl down the drug addiction hole and being unable to climb out - and Sebastian's vocal delivery is amazing AND powerful, and the emotion conveyed via this video grips one's heart. I recommend you listen to it again privately, now that you know the back story, as it changes its meaning immensely. Absolutely a timeless Skid Row song

Welcome to the 80's and early 90's rock music by great bands that had great singers.

Sebastian took advantage of voice lessons for years. He was pure natural unbridled talent then became polished with the lessons. And have you ever seen a more beautiful man in your young life ? That’s 6’3 of sheer perfection.

The amazing thing is he can add the rasp to one line, then immediately follow it with a perfectly clean line. It adds so much emotion and texture to the song Likewise he never sings the lines of the song exactly the same way, he always varies the intonation and phrasing every time it comes around.

Great reaction, and great song. Definitely one of my favorite vocal performances of all time. So many different levels of expression. I think I heard Sebastian Bach blew out his voice when recording this song, I can see why.

Oh I just love seeing new people react to Sebastian Bach. His vocal transitions in range going from high to low anything in between with rash growl power he was one of the best actually he still is. I seen skid row in Louisville Kentucky back in 1989 in concert and he sounded just like the production version no kidding he was amazing. Second to none and unmatched in some arenas. Gee whiz I could go on and on about how good he is but at 54 I don't want to embarrass myself anymore I already look like a brand new fan boy😂

For a time in the early 2000's, Sebastian Bach, performed on Broadway in the lead role of 'Jekyll & Hyde.'

This song was really personal for Sebastian Bach because it's about their friend Steven Adler ( former drummer of Guns n' Roses ) who at that time was struggling to heroin addiction. That's why you can really feel his emotions singing this song.

Skid Row was one of the very first bands I was into when I thankfully discovered music, basically having hard rock and metal as my starting point. I definitely got into tons of different genres in the ensuing years, but this was where it all began for me. Used to rock out to their songs quite a bit. “18 and Life” was their top tune for me, but they wrote lots of great songs in their day. Yes, I learned this song was written about the drummer of a band who was their peers, who had fallen hard into the substance abuse and addiction depicted in the video. Skid Row notably eschewed the huge hair and makeup you can see from around this era of music, so I was never distracted by any kind of image and just rocked to them.

Yet another talented hard rock band that disbanded way too soon. Health , Addiction or Chemistry... Your critique, observations are always spot on.

About 7~ years ago I had the opportunity to see him as a solo act opening for Guns N’ Roses. He was absolutely amazing live, even if he’s not at his prime anymore. Amazing to see how much energy he brings to a stage.

I remember when this came out and have always thought that this is one of the most outstanding vocal performances ever done. Plus Scotti Hills guitar solo matches it perfectly. I'm lucky enough to have had a couple of guitar lessons with Scotti and chat to him every now and then. He cites Jeff Beck as one of his major influences and I can hear that in this solo.

Sebastian is not only an incredible vocalist, he's one of the nicest people you'd ever meet! VERY down to earth and never let fame go to his head. At least not when I met him. I'm about to watch your reaction to King Diamond, but if you like Sebastian, I suggest "Steelheart, I'll never let you go". INCREDIBLE HIGH notes. Another is Flotsam and Jetsam, No Place For Disgrace. The last Flotsam album with Jason Newsted before he joined Metallica.

Skid Row is from New Jersey, but original singer Sebastian Bach is from Canada... Skid Row is best known for their 3 records w/ Sebastian Bach (vocals) and Rob Affuso (drums)... both were let go in 1996 after a dispute w/ Rachel Bolan (bass), Scotti Hill & Dave 'Snake' Sabo (guitars) ...Skid Row reformed in 2000 w/ (the late) Johnny Solinger (vocals), but they couldn't replace a singer of Sebastian Bach's caliber... Skid Row went through a few singers (and drummers) before settling on Swedish vocalist Erik Gronwall recently. Sebastian Bach has been a solo artist since the 90's. Some more classic Skid Row songs - '18 and life' ... 'Monkey business' ... 'Beat yourself blind' ... 'Youth gone wild' ... 'Quicksand Jesus' ... 'I remember you'... 'Slave to the grind'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Remeber when SkidRow showed up for the first time and getting the LP. Always really loved that band. So cool to see young people discover and reacting to the music you grew up with in the 80s or early 90s. So much fantastic music was created back then. That sill better than most created today :-)

When i see Sebastian and hear him i cry he has such passion for music! I love him so much! Just a beautiful man ..his voice just does something to everyone unbelievable talent! Sebastian is not only an amazing singer, he's a really kind guy to his fans. At the height of his fame he treated fans like friends backstage. He wasn't looking for girls. He was married. He asked my friend for a t-shirt he was wearing and my buddy said it belonged to a huge fan of his (me) who couldn't be there. Sebastian had the whole band sign it personally to me. I wrote to him on his site about a decade later and he remembered my friends by name and the shirt. Great guy.

From what i've read, Sebastian Bach was classically trained, which may explain the similarities in his technique you are seeing.

Hey Aliyah. Yes this song has beautiful and sad memories for me. Living on my own in Asia, working Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in the 1990s. Meeting lots of people. Sometimes for love, some loveless. Is it all just wasted time. The bar on Jalan Sultan Ismail called brannigans had a Filipino band that could cover this so well I had goosebumps.

This song was written about Sebastian's friend Steven Adler the original drummer of Gun's n Roses. He got addicted to heroin and his playing got so bad he was fired from Gun's n Roses. In 1996 Steven suffered a stroke after taking a speedball which is a mixture of heroin and cocaine. He was in a coma but survived. He had paralysis on one side of his face and a lisp. He's he's battled with his Addictions ever since but he seems to be doing okay these days. he still plays drums he's been in a couple of big bands and in 2016 he actually got to play a couple of shows with Guns and Roses again

The technique he uses to add rasp is called glottal compression. It's a way of increasing pressure through the airway to alter resonace. It's really the only safe way to create distortion. In opera you may be more familiar with glottal stops or glottal seperation.

By harshness you mean vocal fry, which is also the same technique used in growling. I've learned how to growl first, then eventually idolizing vocalists like Sebastian Bach. It is then i realized and learned how to do it w/ belting. I'm not a pro i just love singing. You might want to check out W.A.S.P. and Cinderella as well.

Its good to see younger gen taking this style of music in cuz it was an amazing time in music. Its gone now.. but that vocals like Baz was a once in a lifetime talent that will never be seen again. Todays Skid Row is a shadow of what it use to be. Unfortunatly Baz can't hit the notes he could back then but thats what happens to singers. as thet age.

They wrote this after being on tour with Guns N Roses, and its about GnRs drummer at the time Steven Adler and his heroin addiction that ultimately caused him to be fired from that band. The imagery shows people using heroin and the visions of the white horse is a slang term for the drug. They also reference horses in the lyrics.

He was incredible back then 90’s. I actually saw him star in Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway. He did a great job. Surprisingly not quite the live power of other Broadway stars from Phantom and Les Mis, but he did an admirable job! At the end, he was given a rose and bit into it and sprayed the chewed petals everywhere. It was amazing!

Sabastian Bach was a candian trying to make it in theater and sent a tape to bon jovi manager company. Scott Hill is the foundeeband wrote most of all the sings with Dave the snake Sabo. Alot of their mid tempo and ballad numbers are started out on 12 string acoustic then move to a drop d power chord electric guitar

The harshness is generated by using false chord vocals, but also this particular era in metal (and the decade earlier) they also made use of vocal frye screams. Two timeless trademark techniques of metal music. Flawlessly used by a legendary vocalist like Sebastian Bach. Yeah he definitely felt his performance deeply because Steven Adler was the original drummer for Guns n Roses and Sebastian's life-long best friend. Thankfully, he did survive a drug-enduced heart attack and is still with us today. The lyrics "the horse stampedes and rages in the name of desperation" refers to how he claimed the drugs would literally call him to come back to them even when he didn't have any and 'horse' is street slang for black tar heroin which was his drug of choice. Fun fact, the substance that horse reduces to when you boil it for mainlining, is actually a pearl white color, hence the white horse in the video.

Those were the days, Young Sebastian performance is still my favorite although Erik Grönwall is doing a great job nowadays
