I love seeing this man’s channel skyrocket after Tekken 8 release. Bro has gained like 30k in a blink.

Thanks for discussing this in detail, I think this is one of the hardest aspects of Tekken for new (and intermediate) players to internalize, especially with the surprising amount of depth and complexity involved in good Okizeme.

Very frustrating coming from 2D games where you can guarantee oki with a safejump to Tekken where there are a million options to consider. Great vid.

This is valuable stuff. It also feels really appropriate for Toast to be asking these questions. Not only is he analytical, his character almost requires excellent defensive reactions.

Namco missed their opportunity to do this, they got it with the peekaboo stance, flicker stance which is true to the philly shell but the shuffle became "lion heart" like man so close

Depending on the character I’m facing I usually delay tech roll, but when facing Kaz, Hwoarang, Bryan or mfs that have moves that hit grounded and cause a pancake flip I decide to alternate between tech roll, delay tech roll, spring kick and get up kick
@Valigarmanda
@Valigarmanda 2 месяца назад
I think Steve's foot stomp hits both techroll options, so long as you don't commit and only do the footstomp.

Yep. Ground game is one of those things that definitely requires experience. It's definitely a guessing game, but how much depends on your game knowledge, your opponent's skill, and what the general level of the game is. At low levels, you can almost always just trap back rolls. But at high levels, you gotta sus out mind games and try to be unpredictable. It's a concept that you can't really teach, although Phi tries his best here, and I think he covered the basics well enough. It doesn't help that Toast is learning this with Steve. I'm a Steve main myself, and he doesn't really have a lot of wakeup punishes. Pretty much his running 2, FF 2, Sonic Fang, d 1+2, uf 2, and the toe stomp. And 3 of those basically require a range of zero.
@carloshernandez3177
@carloshernandez3177 2 месяца назад
This is true because some characters have incredible damage and setup potential if the opponent gets predictable with wakeups and others not so much. Like King can punish you HEAVY for even staying on the ground. Kazuya oki is insane too, Jin with his new combo reset etc.

I used to fail to adapt in TK7…. Every single time. That or I’d waste damage on people who’d stay grounded Now I’m at least running in, taking their move on block and punishing but it could be better I drilled a lot of ss launching but it’s hard with the electric

How do y'all beat opponents on ground??? Ive played for years, anyone got tips on sidestepping wakeups something ive always struggled with.. I play mishima (ArK in T7) i would usually wavu wavu as usual and then backdash to beat kip up and low mid kick... Does anyone have ways it clicked for them, sidestepping wake up kicks?
@Guitar-Dog
@Guitar-Dog 2 месяца назад
I think it's SSR, my fault I've not labbed it 😅 But I'd rather backdash than at the wall say, as Phi showed, its more on open ground, i think in T8 ive been very 'aggressive' on taking ground, becuase of the larger stages, ive maybe just been a bit blind to my timing. Any tips

Kaz and DJ can do steel pedal over and over again to enforce techrolls
@Guitar-Dog
@Guitar-Dog 2 месяца назад
@@atollcollector yeah course, but after a combo in open ground you lose too spring kick (FUFT 3+4) usually. If I'm being honest use a ground hitting move is good advice but I'm past that
@Guitar-Dog

I'm asking specially about beating wake up kicks.. Kazuyas steel pedal is a FF input so it can lose diablo Jimmy's B4 is better for not getting clipped (don't play Jim sadly)

Did you go through the arcade quest? I know it seems lame but it doesn't take too long and it gives you all the fundamentals you need, although the first 30 minutes will be boring obvious stuff it does teach you the basics. The most important thing though, don't compare yourself to others too much. Especially people who are basically e-famous for being good at video games. These are not average players. Like you wouldn't get upset that you can't pick up a new sport as fast as a pro athlete. Pro gamers are going to pick up new games much faster because they already know what it takes to get good and they are good at doing so. And even beyond that, it does you no good to compare yourself too much to others. So just don't. Easier said than done though.
@RustyReplicant
@RustyReplicant 2 месяца назад
@charliericker274 Yeah i did about half of arcade quest and it was a bit too silly and decided to watch more replays, vids, etc. I dont mind loosing but being constantly demoted with no imporement is what is getting to me. I have some very bascialy input flaws im trying to work through. Also have a heck of a time in punishment training and timing, etc. I was bascially as low as you can go warrior today. The one thing i will say is this isn't really enjoyable at all. I have so much fun watching others hoping i can play better and the game will click soon.

My ground game is surprisingly good. Most people have a tendency towards a particular wake up option. My best advice if you're learning is to just give space and see what happens. For Lili I make sure I'm in backturn. DB into sidestep counters most options and leaves me in neutral otherwise. That's only if they are successfully escaping my Oki.

Anyone else wanna main Steve but already get bodied while playing easy characters? I don’t wanna have a 30 percent winrate😂
@VermillionGates
@VermillionGates 2 месяца назад
80% win rate with Steve in ranked (just reached ruler ranks) and about 77% in quick match. I think the common approach to ranked is bad if you worry about losing rank or poor win rates like me. Just play quick matches until you're feeling really solid and consistently beat players ranked over you. Also always play several quick matches before even touching ranked in a session

Tekken's ground game is too complicated for no reason in my opinion. Getting otg damage makes sense but getting launched after tech rolling gotta be the worst feeling. I just want to get up and block and I'm now in another combo. Ridiculous
@carloshernandez3177
@carloshernandez3177 2 месяца назад
It's not intuitive yes, but it's depth is unique and cool to tekken, it obviously kills scrubs but it can also be telling of how good a player is just like combos, neutral, and punishment
@Mckhus
@Mckhus 2 месяца назад
I agree, you lose one 50/50 and take half health for it fine, now you try to get up and not let it happens again and bam another half health gone. Also feels like no one fking understands how this works including the game engine where it makes people jump over attacks or suddenly roll into horizon cos lockon got wonky.

In t7 i never took it seriously or looked anything up but combos and highly technical combos for lee/kazuya. Now in t8, 9 years later, I'm taking the game nore seriously. Kazuya is the best character to learn first. You have to learn Tekken from the ground up with him. Every bit better i get with kaz, all of my other characters get infinitely stronger
@carloshernandez3177
@carloshernandez3177 2 месяца назад
This is true, however it's insane to expect new players to want to do that. Easier characters can still teach you a lot but fundamentals are FORCED taught by Kazuya
