It's hard to see how any worthwhile time could be saved by spaced characters, given the open door for confusion. Also, how did a receiving operator know that the sender was going to use spaced characters?? Personally, I used to send numeric code msgs (OBS) using a sideswiper/Cootie key, which did save time.
