People dont realize that without ROGER LINN music instrumentation would not be what it is today. Thank You Roger! - Logikbomb (Will Wade) - DC Producer
It is true that Tempest first shipped in 2011 (nearly 6 years ago), but I'm not aware of any current analog drum machine that equals it in terms of sound, workflow, features and versatility. It certainly is very popular among professionals and I think we've made an instrument that will be in use for many years to come.
You should try to reach out to Sufjan Stevens to see if he would do a demo video or something. It would be a huge long shot, but he's an avid user of the Tempest, and does some very interesting stuff with it in his music (and I'd love to see him explain his process). Cheers!
What I love about the Tempest is that although it pays respects to the classic heritage of analog drum machines, it is distinctly unique and forward-looking in its own right. It stands on its own as an instrument, and cannot be replicated. A true classic.
Has been my songwriting tool for years, best workflow. It just needed more memory, polyphonic recording and a full 16 channels of MIDI in. Looking forward to a Linn sampler/mpc killer SOON!
Elektron RYTM MK1 and MK2. Roland MC707, Arturia Drum Brute to name but a few and all have most if not like the Elektrons more features with super sound quality and all vastly cheaper.
Was lucky enough to meet Roger the other day. Not only is he responsible for some of the greatest electronic instruments but is also a genuinely lovely chap!
It's because he designed it... usually these demos are done by people who have no idea what they are doing. I agree, a flawless explanation, but I can't say that I'm surprised.
I love this instrument. I had to leave the States for 5 months while traveling around Russia and I brought my Tempest with me. ~ So convenient to have both an analog drum machine and poly synth together in one unit, which fits so easily into my carry-on luggage. It's the kind of instrument where you already have so much fun with just knowing the basic operations, while you don't feel like you're at a loss because you haven't mastered all the features. It always satisfies no matter your skill level. I'm always learning something new.
Got my Tempest only a few months ago and it's a sound designers dream for both drum and non-drum synthesis. Thanks for all the effort you put into designing the Tempest! This video is almost 6 years old and there still is nothing on the market today that does quite what the Tempest is capable of, which I think speaks volumes about its design.
Roger Linn, please let me give you my humblest thanks to you for creating the awesome LinnDrum which I've had the joy of using and still use! Thank you for the best drum machines in history! The Linn kick is THE kick to go for. Have a great summer!
Just got one today. Blown away by the complexity, and the unique sounds out of this machine. I a excited to dig deeper into it, and learn how it works.
Thank you Dave and Roger for this amazing instrument. The sounds are dope, the workflow is amazing especially for anyone whose ever used mpc's. It sound an absolute beast, it feels good, it looks sexy and it is intuitive. The interface becomes transparent very quickly. Thanks for sharing your vision with the world. It's brought a whole new dimension to mine. Peace
You really outdid yourself with tempest, Roger. It's an absolute masterpiece - something that challenges users to fundamentally reconsider how they approach beat-making. Thank you for putting so much hard work into this machine. The tempest sitting in my bedroom feels like a loaded gun. It's the only machine I've ever had that has truly scared me because of the possibilities it presents, like standing in front of the monolith in 2001 - and I'm just a monkey playing with bones.
Buying one tomorrow. Owned your classic machines in the past, but I'm so excited about this! I will be having a few late nights! Thanks for an amazing machine, as well as all your previous classics!
superb explanation - articulate and intelligent ----- so well done. I am ordering mine tomorrow. It was between a Tempest and a Toraiz sp16 and decided on the Tempest.
Fascinating device even 5 years after launch packs quite a punch. It is an all round system between beats and synth voices With the latest beta update it really bring out the best.
Whoever thinks that this is too expensive, or that software can do this... Nope. It's analog. Now it's personal preference whether analog or digital is better, but really analog is the sound everyone should be after. Roger invented the drum machine, the tempest looks brilliant and everyone into electronic music should want it.
Very inspirational instrument...I've been a huge fan of DSI since the Evolver... I own a few pieces...but this is my first Roger Linn instrument. So far the menu system in intuitive. The sound is of course fantastic.
@rogerlinndesign I' am honored to have your best creation. The Roger Linn MPC 3000! I LOVE it and will always have it as the main piece of my studio. Peace 2 U Rog! - Logikbomb (DC Producer)
"I’ll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you’re using here: it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you’re selling it, you want to sell it."
this is Roger Linn, He invented the Linn Drum the original and one of the best most used in recording history. He IS the one who had the discipline to create this. Not coming down on you for your thoughts, i just believe you don't know the history of what you are looking out. Wiki Roger Linn or Linn Drum.
Hi Roger thanks for making the best drum machine I've ever experienced!! A great use of Electricity, Electronic music would not be the same without Geniuses like Yourself and Dave Smith!! Best Wishes Jamie :)
Thanks Roger! I saw you and Dave Smith demo and play this wonderful instrument at Moogfest in 2014, where I got to thank you in person. Hey, thanks again :) Nice demo!
I have a NI Maschine. After watching this, I can see the vast superiority in sound and ease of use of the Tempest. I am selling my Maschine immediately (and sellilng a few other things) to afford this fantastic creation.
808's are going for £2500-00 GBP here in the UK ! that is crazy ...this represents stunning value for the power on tap ! there is a 6 voice analog synth thrown in too !
Going to be getting this. Made that decision about 2 minutes in; Roger Linn seems too intelligent to be involved with anything but the most cutting edge in music technology. Finally, a machine made by people who USE hardware, addressing REAL problems with previous hardware options available.
Being able to load samples and then tweak the hell out of those with all them knobs would be LOVELY...and Dave Smith stated they may add that feature in an update in the future, sooooo......
If you ever get out of the synth game, you could get into professional V/O work! Never mind the amazing unit, the narration basically sold me. Well done!
Thanks Roger. By the way.. .What is that speaker-looking thing in the background?? THe thing with the green horned pot on top of it? Also I f*&$ing love the Tempest! Amazing machine. When I can (lots of other crud to sell first..) my next purchase will be the PRo 2 - tried it in the shop yesterday and was amazed - wonderful!!
Almost 10 yrs after release basically nothing can compare to this device. I would really really like to have one ,Roger Linn, would you please send one to me?
Roger Linn Can I send you my address? :) In all seriousness, this is ultimate gem you and DS developed. There are many great machines around, but most of them either too sample-dependent or just too wild and hard to articulate. Tempest is right up my alley, with deep sculpting options and superb synth engine, plus classic sounds. Whenever I used it, it basically cuts through the mix with little or no processing at all. You sir are one of the true pioneers of synth engineering, and we can hear your legacy on countless classics - and now Tempest is a part of contemporary music of all possible genres and sub-genres as well. Thank you for being great and providing us with such amazing tools.
@FromPoetryToRap It needs a laptop, factor that in and it basically costs the same or more. This is standalone and for a lot of people the appeal comes from the fully featured inbuilt analog synth
It's great to see this detailed demonstration! I can't wait to try it myself. RE: 12:00 I like to play quantized drum rolls that go from slow to ultra fast. Could I map the quantization value to one of the sliders, and / or the pressure of the pads?
when i start new projects, i just open a factory project, then erase everything from it and add my beats/sounds in from there. then you can rename the project, and move it to whichever folder you want. when you erase the contents of "roger's beats" for example, although you used it to create a new project, you can still go back and access that project as it was before you erased everything inside it.
oh btw hope you've seen the latest Blind Test // Drum Machines - Episode 23 (Electronic Beats TV) video - theres Tempest in there and it sounds awesome
@TheOPTIMYSTICALbeats it synthesizes the drum sounds which are editable. I don't think you can use samples. If you want to use samples check out the Elektron Machinedrum UW-1
This was a dope drum machine.. it’s cool to see legends work together to make history! Roger, do you think you’ll ever collaborate with Tom Oberheim to do a Tempest mk2? That would be one of the dopest machines.. MPC pads with Linn & Oberheim analog sounds!
@@rogerlinndesign for sure! You guys deserve it! I just wanted to throw some ideas out since Dave smith is no longer with us.. all three of you guys made history! Also, a modernized mpc 60ii or 3000? 😎 again, just throwing some ideas out there! Lol
@@joseph395 Though as a general rule I don’t discuss future products, I have no current plans for a new drum machine. Except for Tempest, drum machines are something I did 30+ years ago and I don’t have the same interest in drum beats that I had all those years ago. These days I’m focused on the instruments I’m making now, which are far more revolutionary, and which you can learn about on rogerlinndesign.com. Though these new instruments are not focused specifically on beats, they open a whole new world of possibilities for beat makers. I’m afraid I’ve always been more interested in the future than the past.
@@rogerlinndesign 100% understand..👍 I’ve never had the chance to own the classics (60/3000) but I’ve had the chance to work on them and I loved both those machines, so I’m a bit stuck in the past with them Lol.. but regardless I’m going to support ya! Keep up the great work Roger!
It has most of them but its focus is synthesis. Also, that video is from 2011 and after selling 5000 units, Tempest was discontinued by Sequential around 2020, so it’s no longer available.
@FromPoetryToRap you're missing the point, to some people, a standalone instrument is far more appealing than something that has to be attached to a potentially unstable laptop. Plus, it has vintage style analog oscs, analog filters, analog distortion etc AND digital oscs, it's the real thing - not an emulation like maschine. I have a Tempest now, worth every single penny IMO but to each their own!
Super powerful. I mean, if you don’t know your drums, your tones... it’ll teach you. And if you master it, yer a master of noises. You trace your own path. Think of it as freedom from samples, presets, indoctrination. You’re no longer under the spell, the distorted lens. And same-old-samers will bow to you.
@lazerfaceband to each their own indeed. if people would like a standalone instrument though, (this mostly counts for hiphop producers), cheaper than this instrument, is the BeatThang. Doesn't even need a power cable, any keyboard can be connected to it, does everything, probably even more than the Tempest. They both good though!
It's not expensive. If you think about how many digital mpc's you have to buy in a lifetime to keep up with the upgrades in technology, it would easily double the price of a Tempest. Analog will always be analog, now and 10 years from now it will sound good. It's my favorite bit of gear in my studio right now...buy one!
I understand synthesizing and everything, but i don't understand the display or how i start a NEW empty project so i can synthesize my drums from SCRATCH.
This drum machine is amazing.., but sweet Jesus why is the price so high? I can't imagine your production costs per unit being anywhere near the street price. It's a great unit.., but I think you guys priced it out of reach for a lot of people.
I will be first in line with a fistful of dollars for this! I would love to hear more demos with the " bass guitar " or synth sounds being used tough. Could you demo some of the synth stuff please?
Sorry, I'm a bit dense. Just to be straight, it can play 32 different sounds in a project, but it can only play 6 at a time right? How does that work with the 6 outputs? Do certain sounds share a specific voice, so for example, the bass drum and shaker would steal from each other's polyphony?
Roger Linn What happened to the sampler version of the Tempest? If I recall correctly, you were making the Tempest Sampler separate, but you changed it up some to where it wasn't exactly a Tempest, but still a sampler... It was my most anticipated sampler, but I can't find any recent info on what became of, or is still to become of your project.
I’m currently working on it. I can only develop one instrument at a time and for the past few years that has been LinnStrument. But I’m back working on the sampled-sound drum machine.
Roger Linn Roger, I really appreciate your response. Thank you. The Linndrum was my introduction from my uncle as a child to your work, and later became the reason I fell in love with the artistry of your Akai MPC60 and MPC3000 designs. My uncle showed me music production, and passed on the love for your music gear, sort of a "lineage" connection from one generation to a new generation. I've noticed that you include your name in your instruments (Linndrum, Adrenalinn, Linnstrument), I thought maybe I'd throw out a suggestion since I've experienced a connection through the generations... The *Linneage*. I think that would be such a fitting name for your work. 😀 Personally, I loved the idea of the Tempest with the 16 pads, but with sample recording through audio in's, and sample import/export. Of course an old MPC user is going to love that idea, right? Haha!
Hey any Tempest users here- how do I assign my own Beats in sequentially ordered pads per Project like the presets? I can't find any video or instructions that are relevant to that
