The MAJOR problem with static Dolby Atmos encodes is that they are not scalable. If you have more speakers than the fixed bed channel encode, the extra speakers will remain silent. For example... if the encode was 7.1.4 and you have a 9.1.6 setup, then four speakers will receive no audio information (the Front Wides and Top Middles). They don't do this to save money because most of the master tracks are mixed using objects. It's that the person doing the home video encoding did not set up the Atmos Production Suite's deliverable file correctly. There are Atmos tracks on Disney+ that have moving 3D objects where the disc got only a static encode, for instance.

its funny that your #1 recommendation is a game, I just started playing gears 4&5 and so far the atmos in-game is better than any UHD movie I've watched. Games might have an unfair advantage of literally being built in a 3d space.

The other issue is the amount of object clusters allowed within a particular home Atmos encoding for Blu-ray... the minimum is 11 and the maximum is 15. The fewer the object clusters allowed the more spatially compressed the soundtrack has become since the objects have been "clustered" together in tighter location zones and not allowed to be fully discrete, individual sound items. The reason 11 may be used is for space saving consideration, especially if the disc is only a BD-66 or has multiple foreign language tracks taking up space. If the Blu-ray audio bit rate spec wasn't as constrictive, you could assign more object clusters above 15.

Can you clarify the Devotion selection? Everything I've read says both the Blu-Ray and 4K version are mixed at a paltry 5.1, and NOT in Dolby Atmos.

Correct. The only way to get the Atmos encode is through the 4K version sold through Kaleidescape

There is a particular European 4k Blu-ray release coming out on October 31st that has both the Dolby Atmos mix as seen on Kalaidascape and a European exclusive Auro3D 13.1 track. It's also on a BD-100 whereas everywhere else got a cramped BD-66.
