The stealth kills weren’t creative “at the time”, they ARE creative and great. Tenchu wasn’t a great game “at the time”, it IS great and puts so many of the modern games that have stealth mechanics to shame.

I think Fatal Shadows is the only game that you can be reverse-stealth killed. It's an interesting mechanic and I was shocked the first time I was killed like that.

Tenchu 2 feels a step forward and two steps back from Tenchu 1 in terms of gameplay. It made some changes Tenchu 1 really needed, but also messed up a lot of the things it did well before.

Then it's Tenchu 1 Tenchu Z Tenchu 3 Those are all the ones I played.. Z was the more refined mechanics of 3.. But lacked a plot.. Thats its one downside.. Nothing holds a candle to the immersing sense of Tenchu 2.. The lack of music on stages is a good thing.. I loved being out in those environments and hearing all the noise.. I always liked Tenchus music but I feel it has its place.. Playing over the gameplay isn't it.. I like the silence.. I like hearing the wind though the bamboo trees, crickets or the crashing of waves.. It had a sense of really placing you in the environments.. It brought a number of key elements to the series that the rest of the series failed to develop on as well.. Like swimming, underwater stealth, the breathing underwater with the reed, the details around different kills depending on where you attacked from and the combat being the most detailed.. Some of the latter was kept in 3 and Z but it just wasn't as kentic.. There felt like there was more of a moveset to learn and master in that game.. Which there was.. Each of the 3 characters and how its told and interweaves is the peak of the series as well.. More grounded.. No demon silliness that I felt generally derailed the series.. Sure it was an element in the original game.. But it was my least favourite part.. I much preferred the grounded approach of deal with crazy radical monks, sleazy merchants, rogue warlords ect.. Everything about Tenchu 2 felt like a step forward.. I understand the choice with the grapple and it frankly makes you a far better player if you think as the grapple allows.. As mentioned the original game you could grapple to any surface.. Which allows for some pretty wild things at times.. With Tenchu 2 is hard edges.. Not well explained in the video.. But the edge must have something to it.. Its a more realistic approach to the grapple.. Falling is annoying.. But its very possible to not fall from grappling if you use the tool correctly.. But I will admit the grab out of the grapple is lacking and some edges you can and should have grabbed sometimes don't.. But the complaint is honestly minimal to me when the rest of the game is so outstanding.. Just the intro alone to 2 beats anything the series has to offer outside of it.. It sets the mood and world you're in so well.. Great voice cast as well.. Best voice acting in the series.. Cant sing Tenchu 2s praises enough.. If they were to reboot the series its Tenchu 2 they should be looking at for the main inspections as it was the most innovative and forward thinking of the series... 3 and Z as solid as they are feel like steps backwards and it always erked me.. I couldn't have been the only one disappointed by the direction the series took after Tenchu 2 as well.. Because the series was in effect dead by 2007.. With one hope being that Aquire would return and make a true Tenchu 3.. They did return in 2008 as a last ditch effort to make Tenchu relevant and a critical stealth title game.... Its the worst in the series.. Did it do new things yes.. Did it change the game into a waggle your arm around game without the detail rich stealth sandbox.. Yes.. And the game flopped with critics but importantly.. Audiences.. The series has now been completely dead for 15 years.. Which the only light being that Microsoft buying Activision will give Microsoft the rights to the series and with it a hope that the series will be revived.. It will be Microsofts key Japanese IP and they will likely be looking for a developer in Japan to make a new game or they will form a studio themselves to house the IP and Tenchu like Gears will have its own dedicated studio.. But ideally based in Japan and recruiting there. So that's exciting.. Thats not to say these things will happen they might not.. But there is potential there.. Activision did approach From Software to make a new Tenchu a couple of years ago.. But the project developed into Sekiro instead.. Which is a good game, but its not Tenchu by any means.. Watch this space.. But anyone interested in Tenchu will be watching this Activision/Microsoft deal very closely.

Tenchu 1-2's creators than continued via Shinobido series...

Lack of budget, playable characters, dubwork, facial animations, story. Really sad because it had a lot of potential.

in terms of story sure, but not gameplay that honor goes to shadow assassins which if this series ever returns is retconned out.

I think the DS game is underrated. If you only play it for a couple minutes you probably won't like it, but if you put a couple of hours into it, it may change your mind. It doesn't like a good time, but I was surprised once I gave it a chance and played through it.
