SuperRAD rankings are special because he has actually taken the time recently to play a lot of these old games extensively, trying to give each of them a fair shot and ultimately judging them with more than just nostalgia goggles. That said, he's a longsword player so all of these rankings are meaningless.
I've replayed it from scratch 3x - only annoyed about the introductory tutorials I think by MH games it definitely had more unskippable scenes than any other though...
Say what you will about Rise's changes to the flow but its roster is pretty cool and diverse. All classifications have at least one rep except for snake wyverns, neopterons and carapaceons. The latter is confirmed to be addressed in sunbreak and I hope the others are too.
Rise reconfirmed my long standing blood feud with Kulu Ya Ku. That fucker gave me hell in Monster Hunter World. I have made it my mission to kill that bitch whenever the opportunity arises. My first feud and it’s still an asshole is The Great Maccao, that thing needs to die!
one thing that bothered me about hunting arts, styles, switch skills, etc. is that for some weapons some of the arts dont change the gameplay at all, or are absolutely useless, or completely break the gameplay of the weapon. that being said I love how much variety the good ones add to a weapon.
@@kyoflow16 i think dual blades have some of the best switch skills in the game bc theyre not just simply better or worse, i would switch out which ones I was using based on the monster I was fighting and I thought that was so cool.
@@kyoflow16 recall Kinsect is actually good in emergencies cause it has I frame as well as restore Kinsect stamina to full. Pretty good for those bugs that have slow stamina regen
@@James-yk5ge I kinda disagree completely, feral demon mode makes such a big dps difference that the evasiveness of the other isn’t comparable, in all the situations tower vault is good your better off just using demon flight and keeping bind, and demon flight is just better for most end game monsters in general.
As for arts. As a CB main playing mhXX, yea arts do absolutely nothing but add some cool flashy moves. As a SnS main in MHXX. Hoo boy are arts busted by all means.
@@greenmarble1032 I play both. I’ve been checking off all the quests and doing rampages for talismans, and a lot of random online HR when I just wanna have fun and help folks. I only have 4 quests I haven’t been able to beat yet, and they’re all Apex Emergency events. A bit harder than regular it seems, especially with random hunters online.
@@greenmarble1032 i also have 250 h in rise cause i tried to "master" 3 weapon other than the mighty longsword. But now that I really finished the game I'm spending 2-3 hours per day in gu to complete all the village and hr hub quests
For World, it took me playing it once through and not playing it for two years and then starting a new game for me to appreciate it. I liked it a lot more the second time around for some reason
Same here. I think its cuz the 1st time i just wanted to see the next monster and get my gear all maxed out but the 2nd time around i was more relaxed and just enjoyed the scenery and stuff

Agree with everything except 4u being below FU I just think the amount of content that 4u had makes it a better game and it finished the weapon roster maybe when you replay it solo with insect glaive you'll be turned

I think 3U might be one of my favorites too. I think 3U is my favorite old MH game (that I've played so far) and Iceborne is my favorite in the series in general. The game just made me fall in love with the series. Now it's probably my 3rd favorite series ever.
Always find these community discussions from people who've been playing longer than me interesting. Quality of life features that I literally can't imagine being seen as a bad thing in any way become such a deep divide. Personally feel that fifth gen and Rise specifically have much much deeper issues than that stuff. Anyway. Glad to see Portable 3rd in RAD tier that game is fucking excellent
As someone who started playing in monster hunter world it's very intresting to hear this perspective as someone who loves almost everything about world. Makes me want to play the past entries and see if they let me enjoy the series more than when I was introduced to it. From old fan to new fan.
MH3U will forever hold a special place for me bc it was such a big learning curve at the start, but Something about it didn't let me put it down. I stuck with it, learned it, and it was so worth it. Glad it was my first game in the series
That was freedom for me. I never got past Yian Kutku and Gypceros after hundreds of hours of gameplay. Sometimes I wonder what the heck I did all those hours lmao. But that paved the way for Freedom Unite and to future titles

I share your pain, best advice I can give is probably use a lance/gunlance with an armor that has gaurd up and drink megajuice. There is no easy way of beating certain monsters in freedom unite, it's game design sucks with how every monster has incredibly close range hitboxes and locks onto you when insta charging.
i just want to point out one thing that brings Tri higher for me, the gun customization. there was 3 parts you could mix and match with other monster parts for the gun, was amazing. def highest alpha game
It's interesting that you find Rise reaching back to the "older gen" more than World, when most people tend to say Rise is such a huge, huge departure. I started in World, then played GU on the Switch, and then got Rise. I ended up feeling that the game flow? Vibe? Knowledge? of GU transferred to Rise better than Worldborne did. One possible reason could be the monster AI, as Rise seem to have a more "turn-based" monster behavior design than Worldborne did, so the flow of "dance" with the monster feels closer to the old gen? Not sure. In any case, truly objective tierlist. No further debate is needed, a scientifically correct answer has been reached. lol
For me Rise is a reach back to the "older gen" because of the UI, visuals and music, which is what makes Monster Hunter for me. World's Bazelgeuse is the most old gen thing for me in the base game because it looks and sounds the most old gen in the entire game

I'm new to the series and it feels so weird having Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker being my intro to Monster Hunter. For those curious who find this comment, in Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker you could fight, defeat, or capture a Rathalos, Tigrex, or a unique Gear REX. Good shit.
I'm a solo player and my first entry was Freedom Unite, just because I don't have pc or any console. I played it on my Android phone and it's been great! This game is so good and versatile. It's shocking how the game this old can still be viable in 2021-22
Rise was the only game for me where farming a monster countless times for a rare drop didn't make me quit the game because the combat was so much fun that it managed to keep it fun for me even though I didn't make any progress.
I absolutely loved 3U, I also grew a deep appreciation for worldborne because of the environment and ecosystem they managed to create. The world just felt more alive and immersive and I really enjoyed that new feel to the original monster Hunter format I grew up playing. Same format for both games but two different flavors, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed
I'm actually really curious about why hub scaling is a bad thing? For me thats one of the best changes the series has made. I'm someone who tries to solo most things in these games but as much as I love 3U and GU, taking 25+ minutes to hunt one regular monster in G rank is just so exhausting and it sucks to feel like I'm forced to go online to enjoy the game. Iceborne balanced master rank health so much better - enough to at least demand some level of mastery but not so much that regular monsters are taking ages to hunt.
I think my favorites are GenU, Rise, 4u in that order (I just can't click with World idk). But I'm about to play portable 3rd so we'll see how I like gen 3
honestly i can't just decide between FU,4u and P3rd as my favorite mhgame, it's probably a tie between 4U and P3rd but if the later had a Grank i would have been my all time favorite. i think i spent more time in 3rd than in any other game, there is something in the art direction and monster design that really draw me in, way more than any other game.
Fighting Leshen and especially ancient Leshen is just awful pre-Iceborne. Post Iceborne you can likely solo if not duo hunt him with ease with master rank gear
Sorry but putting world / iceborn and rise / sunbreak so low on your tier list is not even close to objective. There is a reason why both games are considered the best monster hunter games. Both added amazing new features to the series. Maybe you are angry about them because you live in the past due to your age but this list makes no sense at all. I don’t like guys who make a tier list while only being super subjective. If I make a tier list then there should be a mix of subjective but also objectiveness which is totally missing here.
People saying safi is too much of a generic dragon while in the same breath praising fatalis and their boring as fuck design. Very rose tinted “back in my day” takes through this video imho
As much as I hate clutch claw, there's no way I could ever go back to pre-iceborne switch axe. The weapon is so much better when the axe mode has a purpose beyond charging meter for sword, which was always the case before.
When it comes to monster hunter world what I really appreciate are all the little touches to give the world more life. Monster hunter isn't just about fight big monster. It's about how these monsters are a part of nature and the ways they interact with it. A lot of little touches in mhw liven up the sometimes kind of lifeless world monster hunter games shouldn't have. Having big continuous maps with a lot of diversity is great, turf wars make the monsters feel like they have actual dynamics, intractable and breakable objects make the environment prevalent in the game. Stuff like that really matters to me and it was great seeing a game actually deliver on that. I also like following the tracks of monsters and I miss it. It wasn't super detailed but it did add to the feeling that you were hunting monsters not entering into an arena knowing exactly where the monster is with your radar brain like rise.
Yea World added more of the little things to make the world feel a bit more realistic. Turf wars, track collection, etc., made it feel a bit more like I was actually hunting for something. And the removal of paintballs in favor of scout flies was a smart adaptation for where the game took us. World brought in alot of new ideas that were too streamlined in Rise, imo Not to ramble too much tho lmao
I liked the idea of guiding lands, but it needed a much larger and more interesting map with more monsters available at a time, even if that meant sectioning it off with loading screens again.

Portable 3rd was an absolute blast to play, of course it was the very partially translated version for an English speaker like me sadly (Unironically was calling all the 3rd gen introduced monsters by their Japanese name for years, like Zinogre was Jinouga for me and I called it Jinouga till 4u lmao) Also truly believe Yukumo Village is better than Pokke even if I believe MHFU is better than Prtbl 3rd

Unfortunately, you cannot play Freedom Unite on iOS due to the game not being compatible with the current version of iOS. I also noticed Capcom has been pulling its games off of the App Store, which I thought was really unfortunate. However I was able to play it on my iPad while it lasted, and it was a blast. Controls were great, but some of the buttons (namely size of them) and the sliders, used for actions such as a shield bash or the fading slash on the long sword, were a minor inconvenience (my thumbs weren’t long enough to easily reach some of the buttons lol). Not too bad overall.
I really hate that I can hear you going through the actual ost in the background and I can predict it in order because I have every MH game ost downloaded on my phone and listen to it in the background at work. Please my brain cant handle the idea that I might have an obsession and hyperfixation.
Rise is the game I started with when I picked it up this past Steam sale, and I got hooked so much that I also got cheap used copies of 4 Ultimate and Generations Ultimate. I wonder if Rise is part of the reason I was so keen to also try a couple of the older style games since it supposedly has more in common with them than World does. Rise is definitely more similar to old school Monster Hunter aesthetically. To be honest, aside from the graphics and some of the members of the monster roster, I'm not as eager to get into World as I am the others.

@@alejosbanned World messed a lot of stuff up lol. It's fun to play but it has quite some faults to it. It doesn't feel like normal monster hunter to me anymore. It's just really different from all the other games, and clutch claw was plain bad, weapon designs were bad, difficulty scaling in iceborne is ALMOST bad. It felt unbalanced in iceborne and at some points just didn't hit the same as some other mh games like mhgu, mh4u, mhp3 etc.
@@OrgBrent Going back to the older titles, I quite see that but it still captures the hunting experience, perhaps even better back in the day, it just is a different experience but a magical one. For me, MHWIB is easily my facorite Monster Hunter game followed by 3U.

Id put Portable 3rd in its own tier between Rad and Alpha. I spent over 500 hours in that game. Its very weird - No Dragonblight (making Deviljho an actual baby and not threatening) - Monsters doesnt hurt as much as youre expecting (I wore Gigginox armor and survived Alatreon fire ball?????) - Invasion/Unstable Quest is a random guessing game, Deviljho doesnt always invade (Tigrex for example will instead). The invading monster doesnt immediately spawn with the main targets, it will spawn after you slain the main targets. The quest will give you extra rewards for slaying the invading monster There are probably some tiny stuff Im forgetting, its been awhile
I think there was some confusion about the last game? Monster Hunter Diary, the game developed by From Software, is NOT a mobile gacha game. It's a game for PSP that later also received a 3DS port. It's actually a pretty cute little game, and really doesn't belong in the Poo Poo Baby Category. Okay maybe in the Baby Game category, but definitely not Poo Poo IMO. It unfortunately has not received a fan translation for any of the versions.
I'm in a strange position. I played every game until they went on the 3ds exclusively, my poor thumbs could not take the tiny controls. I came back to the series in world and loved that I did not have to have picks and bugnets and stuff, but the added RNG mechanics in World and Rise with decos and talismans and now Qurious Crafting is really killing me. Reminds me too much of Titanforging in WoW That said, I don't want to lose the wirebug movement. I could lose the silkbind moves because 90% of them are ass, but the wirebug moving is so much fun.

it's like i enjoyed world, but then i started playing gen u and immediately felt just how much everything felt better in that game. wasn't until iceborne that i could feel like world was worth coming back to regularly. like i couldn't get why people say didn't want to play gen u since it was old school monster hunter, but even it is such a different beast from old school

If p3rd have G-rank I would think that it would be better than FU. I love the aesthetic of the game, I love its Japanese themed village. You obtain health and stamina through hot spring. Felyne skills obtained by the drink. It also brings back weapons that is not present in tri with new moves. Finally, the SnS become so much better. One of the monsters added is Duramboros, and Duramboros is one of my favorite monsters of all time.
Seeing Iceborne in based is painful. World was my introduction to the series and I play Iceborne to this day. It feels/looks natural and alive, the amount of details and subtlety is insane. I’d like to play more MH games to understand your perspectives here.
Have you played the online mode of the original MH? I feel like without the online it's pretty awful because more than half of the content is pretty much not there. Back in the day with the online I would rank it much higher personally. It's hard to quantify how much social experiences affect a game but that was the main draw of the original for me. Gathering for hunts felt different back then. MHF was a much better solo experience but it was impossible for me to co op with people because not many people had PSPs and I also couldn't convince anyone I knew who had one to try out what was at the time a pretty unknown series. Gameplay wise the first is obviously the most bare of all the games but I think that the series actually got worse in its online/multiplayer aspects for a long time. The online didn't really feel good again until Tri, and even then it was Nintendo's online system which has always been inferior. Based on my personal experience with the games I would say the original has brought me the most joy simply due to how fresh the online mode felt at the time of its release. World is the only game since that has come close for me since.
pretty much any mh cannot be judged fairly based upon solely it's villaige quests (offline content) seeing as some private servers are back online maybe people will change their minds
Yea im playing GU now, really feel hard to even get traps, mega pot, and paintball... Even with insects and mining i need to go to quest for that, usually can just get em slowly in farm.
I dunno I actually as a 5th fleeter went back to Monster Hunter 1 in particular, and had a blast with it. I was sad I couldn't Fatalis and other things, but I did everything in the village and it was great. Ya it was clunky, but I mean I wasn't expecting a smooth masterpiece.
Started with 3U so I won't say anything about the games before it. GU is the peak for me though followed closely by 4U. Everything since has been...eh. World looked so meh I just ended up skipping it and IB. Rise has it's moments, but idk the changes they've made in 5th gen have taken the series in the wrong direction unless all you care about is sales. Edit: forgot to actually say my feelings on 3U and the Stories games. 3U will always hold a special place in my heart as my first MH and it's legitimately such a wonderful game. Just wish the 3DS version had online. I'm in the likely very small minority that liked Stories over Stories 2 though. Stories 2 is still very good and improved a ton, but I just found Stories way more charming for some reason.
I can't wait to see how unreasonably pissed off og MH "fans" will be when Wilds will release, they refuse to see this series to move forward abd evolve
i was gonna say this comment is a bit too pessimistic about oldhead MH fans but then i remembered Jakob Monster Hunter's video where he talks about how World and Rise redoing the monster attack hitboxes (to you know, make them actually the same size and shape as the animations) ruined the combat system
Caedus and Jhen are such great fights. They flet like so much more than just big monster siege Quests. Moster hunter hasn't felt the same since 3 ultimate; I'd venture to say that that was peak graphics for monster hunter and it upset me that XX had worse graphics on switch.
For me stories 2 was way worse than 1 for 2 key reasons: enemy ai was hyper consistent in 2, and it was much easier to add speed/power/tech genes to your monsties due to there being an abundance of cheap typed moves to command your monstie with. In 2 literally any enemy you can turn your brain off and double attack into oblivion and take zero damage because theres no chance they'll do something unordinary, so much so that for a meme I tried to beat the game using only herbivores and very VERY easily beat the game, the elders lair, and plenty of coop content (including kukve taroth, last update i played). If enemy ai wasnt so consistent itd be leagues better than 1, but that one thing simplifies the game so badly i cant get over it. T give an idea of how bad the consistency is, I did most story bosses and royal monsters completely hitless save for tigrex, yian garuga, anjanath, and the final boss (aka some of the first monster fights and literally the final story boss that has 3 phases lmao). Edit: completely forgot about the ai partners that made stupid easy bosses even easier, they were so comically unnecessary and SO fucking annoying, one note characters that did nothing but intrude on my ability to play the game to a satisfying degree of setup and execution (aka the fun part of stories combat) And another slight footnote, it had no endgame compared to 1 due to the stripping of the tower to a small short elders lair with no real challenges, and its story was literally the same story as stories 1 but slightly ad libbed and with some extra anime
This! I loved stories 1 because there was risk and thought put into the combat (and I miss hunting horn from 1). There were so many times I wondered if I should risk losing a head to head to get a combo finished, and there was always a chance the monster would go against its normal type. I also vastly preferred the story and characters of 1. In 2, it seems like they got lazy, reusing most characters and not giving much depth to any of the new ones. Plus they removed the monsters being recolor, which was pretty fun
Without the forced clutch claw and if guiding lands was a bit more polished iceborne would be one of the best mh games, but forcing players to use the tenderizing mechanic and punishing you for not using it, and having players grind for hours to unlock the final monsters really makes it easy to drop or burn out on

There are two monsters in Iceborne were tenderizing is (kind of) mandatory, Fatalais and Safi (in Safi's case it really is though). You can perfectly play the rest of the game without it if you want to. I first played it solo to the end without using it much as the mechanic hasn't really sinked in my habits and it was perfectly fine and I still had fun. I then started to use it more often after seeing people use it online. I mean it sure will raise general DPS, but you will maybe save a few mins from a hunt at most. Plus they made tenderizing last way longer in the last updates. However I'd agree that this isn't the most fun of mechanics.
@@Shynji2 the point is, when you need to grind A LOT "saving some minutes" it's really really important. Making a hunt last from 15 mins to 9-10 or less it's a huge part...which is a thing you could do most of the time, by abusing clutch-claw...
@@SilverWarrior95 Yeah, you gain some time (honestly when I said a few mins, I meant like 1 or 2, not up to five, at least based on a solo perspective), but this is not "forced". Or else you would be kinda forced to use the most optimal dps build all of the time (probably playing HBG, too), and do a perfect hunt without any errors, landing every hit in the weakest damage zone, etc.. each run. Also, it's just that the mechanic exists, and while I didn't check the values on damage zones of monsters between Iceborne and previous MHs, I don't think they're so much higher in Iceborne. They got buffed from World to Iceborne, but that's a thing that happened in every MH with G rank upgrade. For example, I'm almost certain that monsters have higher defensive stats (appart from the likes of Fatalis, AT monsters etc..) in Rise than in Iceborne. Plus, If you have fun with the game and its gameplay, having slightly lenghtier quests isn't necessarily a bad thing...
I think all said GU has to be my favourite. If you asked the 12year old me who just finished playing through 3U what the "ultimate" monster hunter game would look like, I'm pretty sure I would describe GU.
Teeeechnically, Monster Hunter Online introduced damage numbers, not World. (Maybe Frontier had them as well, but I barely played that game) Speaking of Online. Cancelled almost immediately? It lasted like 4 or 5 years and was largely cancelled due to World's popularity. In terms of mechanics it was closest to 4 Ultimate, but it was definitely its own thing. It holds a special place in my heart and is probably my fave, but realistically for most people it would probably rest right around the same spot as Frontier. The two games had very similar issues and strengths, but Online was by far the prettier game.

I'd probably make a between tier for cringe and based called "not too cringe but not based, either." Also GL got boring as hell for me post Special Assignments. I only went back for layered gear lmao.
as far as i know they removed the freedom unite IOS. I had it for years and they stopped updating it and it stopped letting me play it as i updated my iphone
