Thanks again for digging into the archives, Alan :-) brings back so many memories! Steffis Grand Slam in 1988 was such a sensation - since after Margret Court so many legendary players failed to do it - and experts almost agreed on that a Grand Slam wouldnt be possible again in modern times. But after Steffi had become so dominant, the public expectations exploded.... After winning the French Open 6:0 6:0, press titled: "Graf on half way to Grand Slam". Almost unbelievable how Steffi could deal with all that pressure -loosing only 2 sets - and than even putting the Olympic Gold on top. And it was done in a time when it was even more difficult cause there were baseliners and serve and volley players - dominating either on slow or fast surfaces,
Thanks so much for this second upload Mark. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it, and it was nice to have a little bit in English 😄. Steffi really was so impressive for a teenager on the tennis court - cool, calm, focused and mature, paired of course with her extraordinary tennis skills. And off court, even with her shyness and reticence for the spotlight, she came across as such a fundamentally nice, decent, humble young woman whose love for her family was her foundation. There’s a reason why she is still so popular all these years after retirement 😃. One great detail was Steffi wearing the Adidas/Run DMC sweatshirt in a TV interview towards the end. I’ve never heard of her being a fan of hip hop (more pop/rock e.g. U2), so I assume this was largely because of her sponsorship deal with Adidas, but still very cool 😎. (Run DMC’s song “My Adidas” came out the year before in 1986 for those that don’t know.)
