Woah, has it really been a month already?? I've been out hiking, camping and living the van life...and doing my best to escape wildfire smoke and heat waves. Here’s what summer in Montana has been like, grizzly bears included. Spoiler alert - Montana is ridiculously beautiful.

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 29K miles*

I wouldn't worry too much about feeding the "RU-vid Monster". Do what you do. Post when you can. While I, and I'm sure others, would love to hear from you more often, it does make it more precious when we do hear from you. Cheers!

When you find yourself camping in bear country, please keep a small bottle of ammonia with you. Put a couple small plastic containers of ammonia on the down wind side of your camp. Bears always come in from the down wind side so they can smell what they are walking into. If the first thing they smell is ammonia, they are not gonna visit you :)

nothing makes you feel more alive than sleeping in a place where you are not at the top of the food chain. GNP is a magical place indeed and the bears make it all the more amazing. I am glad you had a good trip. Btw, where did you hike/camp in the back country? I looks like somewhere near Two Medicine or the Belly River region.

Christian you are an amazing inspiration. You keep me motivated. Although I am old, I have been arranging my life now for the past three years to leave it all behind and hit the open road. Your videos keep me focused on the reality of that journey and keep me pushing for the day when the possessions are gone, the goodbyes have been said, and the wheels on the Airstream start rolling. The life you have chosen is not easy but the humanness you put into these videos makes and keeps it real for those of us waiting to follow in your footsteps.

Hope I don’t sound crazy when I say this but I am seeing bigfoots in your video at 7:16- 7:18 they’re definitely at 7:17 use slowest speed possible. They’re on left side of screen peeking around 🌲 tree I am using a magnifying glass to see these guys. I’ve been obsessed with seeing them since my encounter in the UP of Michigan about 10 yrs ago. They’re in a higher density so they don’t look clear and crisp like we do in photos and videos. You will see a huge head with bulbous nose, eyes etc one below the bigger one also

That was great, love your style of editing and film making:) For me, the filming is the easy part, I feel like editing takes SOOO long, especially if you want to produce a decent video. I was thinking about sending out my footage to a company to try their editing services in the near future, some companies offer a free trial video edit to see if it matches what you want, might be worth looking into. As much as I love spending an average of 6 hours editing & uploading each video, would be great to eliminate that part a bit lol. Maybe cya on the road in August/September!
@ChristianSchaffer
@ChristianSchaffer 3 года назад
Ahhhh yeah I have the same struggle. I would consider an editor if I had a home base and reliable wifi - but the task of uploading/sharing all my raw footage would be a full-time job in itself so long as I'm living on the road 🙃

Great Ambiance, Christian! Stay out of the van as much as you can. One time while bow hunting on Horseback in the Great Bear Wilderness Area, just a few miles south of you, I saw 9 bears in one day, of which seven were Grizzlies and two were blacks. Unknown to most people, the most dangerous thing in my home here in the Rocky Mountains of Montana is not grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves. It is the weather!

@@ChristianSchaffer the best part was watching the two black bears. The Cub would climb a small tree and get out on the limbs too far and fall off and get up and do it all over again. We watched them from the trees on our horses for close to 15 minutes before they saw us. I mentioned your name to Catherine Gregory. She is an excellent videographer, like you, and has similar interests. I'm from Montana and I can attest to the danger bears present. I was in a bar one time minding my own business when a 4 year old male Grizzly bear pulled a knife on me and shook me down for $57 and some unscratched lottery tickets. I narrowly escaped with my life, but I'll tell you an experience like that can really put things in perspective. That was years ago but to this day, sometimes when I'm feeling sorry for myself and lamenting life, I think back to that incident...........and I still miss that $57.

Can you wear bugspray in areas where there are bears? Or do you have to be completely scent free? Just curious!

So worth the wait Christian. You captured so much beauty and majesty. I live in NYC and fear I may never get to see something like this, but I like to know these places still exist. So I always look forward to your captures. I also loved your editing and choice of music in this one. In particular, my personal favorite was the music that started at 3:53 that segued into the waterfall capture in slow motion. The combination of that music with the water just rushing down was truly captivating. It was trancelike. I rewound and watched it several times. You used the same music again at 13:28 and it segued into the slow motion scene of you all running into the lake. Just wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

Really enjoyed this one. I hiked up there last year when the east side of the park was still closed. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Thanks for sharing your fun trip. 😃

Thanks for sharing this. The colors of the rocks, the clarity of the water and the scenery is just breathtaking. I cannot imagine the "recharge" you must feel going into that water. Such a beautiful life.

Do you carry super powerful pepper spray to keep grizzly bears away? I one saw a nature photographer get attacked by a polar bear and he only survived because he was in an special enclosure and he sprayed a lot of pepper spray to get the polar bear to go away.

My wife of just three years died a few months ago and getting out of this grief mode has been huge leap, not yet achieved - BUT all that to say that your Colorado hike with friends had just enough beauty and comradery to it, to lift me away for a bit and take me to a place that maybe offers a doorway out of this self pity hole that I'm in. Thank you for sharing those beautiful mountains and hills, trails and lakes.
