In today's video, we meet Tina from Montana who loves to go camping in her outstanding quality Springbar tent ( Springbar Tent: amzn.to/2HfFKot). While she is still living in a house and working right now, we discuss the possibility of being a nomad in her future and whether she would live in the tent. Hopefully, her experience and ideas will help you decide if living in a tent may be something that would work for you.

I found this very moving. You can see there’s a lot going on there with Tina and rather than scrimp and save or take out a loan, she got the dream accomplished. I have never considered myself a tent kinda gal but I have to admit she is onto something here, she’s got a roomy little studio apartment. Would love to see how the tent goes up. Tina, all the best to you !!

I lived in a tent for a year and a half through ice storms, snow storms, rain for days and the heat. It’s a very doable solution when needed. Mine was stationary, so I made a level platform with pallets, deck-painted plywood over that and then set the tent on that inside the tent, I laid insulation and then Oak tongue and groove flooring. Then I put down a rug for two. I made the walls framed in on the inside, so that I could hang quilts on every side of my bed area. My tent had two rooms. Some months I only had candles to burn before going to bed as my heat. At the time I had one cat and two dogs. It’s an experience I treasure. I know God was present, and gave me many ideas of how to survive comfortably! Thank you Tina, for sharing your story!

Yes, that's what it says at their website. So what happens if it rains overnight and you have to leave in your minivan with wet canvas?? I'm thinking about buying this tent to add to my minivan, but would be a mess to toss in there when wet.
@phyllisstein1837
@phyllisstein1837 6 лет назад
Kathleen Dittmer you'll have to set it up again when it's not raining out to dry even if that's in your own yard. It'll mold and mildew which will ruin the canvas.

The week before I went out to Quartzsite this year (2024) for the RTR, I was trying to figure out the best way to work in the bathroom situation. I planned on camping out of my SUV and bringing my "poop tent" but knew there wouldn't be a whole lot of options of trees to tie that tent to. In discussing it with a friend who is also an experienced dispersed camper, she said, "Why don't you just get a cheap popup tent and use that?" Had never dawned on me to use my popup tent (which I already owned) for a bathroom/dressing room area. Game changer! And not only that, that tent "held my place" at my campsite when I had to drive into town. I highly recommend having a fully enclosed popup tent on hand! I did use it as my bathroom/dressing room area, and slept on my very nice no-build bed arrangement in my SUV. Worked wonderfully!

Having travelled with a tent in the past, it's easily doable. Spent 2 and a half years doing so. Currently, my sister and I are doing the same again. We each have spent the last 11 months living out of the back of 2, old Volvo wagons(240 series), with a trailer on the back for water(400 litres, travel in remote Australia, hot and bone dry) and other gear, fridge/freezer, solar panels and batteries etc.. Use a tarp to keep out of the sun. So yes, both living in a tent and/or a small vehicle, is more than possible, it's achievable! With dogs and even cats, in tow! 🙂

I have winter camped in snow for extended periods, and there is one thing about living in a tent that few seem to mention. ALWAYS, sleep with a sharp knife to be able to cut your way out of a tent in case of fire or other emergency. Aside from that, I love winter tent living.

Bob my favourite vids are the ones of women on their own, how they do it. It gives me so much courage to know there are other women out there. One day I hope you do a vid of a Canadian woman on her own because it's so much different, we can't always be in the warm weather of the USA. I would love to know how other women are doing it. We face all the challenges our sisters in the States do, with lower incomes then men all our lives, divorced, left with nothing, or personal choices that we wish we never made, and we get on in years and don't know what/where/how to live on our own and make our money stretch and unable or not wanting to commit to some sort of retirement home that takes all the rest of our money, where the years just whittle away in dullness. This woman is a tremendous example of honouring the female spirit, facing fears, doing with less. Bless you Bob for showing her, and thanks to her for demonstrating how she does it.

I don't mean to butt in, but I am planning to start this lifestyle with a Toyota Tacoma and a Springbar tent like this one (I have the Campsite 3 model). I'm a female, 5'1" tall. I am able to set up this tent by myself! I practiced several times in my backyard, and used it at the 2018 rubbertramp rendezvous. Wearing grippy work gloves is helpful to me while extending the side bars and get them nicely tensioned. Also no rain fly is needed. The canvas is very tightly woven and is great at repelling water. The company actually instructs you to hose it down when first setting up, to get the weave to tighten up even more. No issues at all with water getting in. On top of all of the other benefits, canvas just has a more comforting, homey and rustic feel. Springbar tents are an excellent investment.

Great job Bob and Tina! The zip tie idea is genius. Until now I didn't think a tent was a viable way to do it, but Tina has changed my mind. Another plus for a tent is that sleeping on the ground eliminates the movement that we in RVs feel during a windy night. The ones on Amazon are made in China as are the Kodiaks. You can buy “Made in the USA” tents on their website, but only selected models. Mine, the Compact 3 is still made in America. I’m familiar with the ones from China since my best friends bought one; it is an excellent tent, the pole set has more tendency to rust but if you keep up on maintenance, it shouldn’t be a huge problem.

Tina seems like an emotionally strong woman being taken to her limits and handling it with grace. I wish I could give her a hug. There are a lot of great people to meet out on the road. I've seen some spacious functional canvas tents used by fishermen and hunters that are to be envied. It's not a bad way to live. It just needs to be one that can be erected easily. But erecting a tent isn't much harder than any other outdoor space that RVers put up. I'm sure, with practice, it becomes a science and goes up and down quickly. If you're alone, you just need to choose one like Tina's, that can be carried and erected by one person. The newer tents go up pretty easily.

Jody J, you are lucky to have a truck! I just have a compact car, and no money to buy something else, so tent at first. Then maybe I can do some work/camp and very slowly save. I will have to be settled on slow, as my social security is almost nothing. I think I will take the passenger seat out so I can sleep in the car if it is raining or too windy to set up a tent. I have done a lot of car camping in the back seat, and felt very discouraged, as even one night was uncomfortable, and a week was all I could bear. I hope to see your truck build someday.

I've been tent camping on and off for 40+ years with many types of tents. This is not a back packing tent. The whole set-up is quite heavy. But if you are a car camper or have an off road rig of some type, you can't beat a Springbar tent. I have the 10x10 version and put a stove jack in it for "hot tent" (wood burning stove) camping. It is the only tent I would now ever own. They are also designs to be a one person set-up.
@AM-os4ty
@AM-os4ty 6 лет назад
My experience is that it's helpful to decide what you're doing, back packing or car camping and gear up appropriately. In fact it might be useful to have two sets of gear, one for each situation if you do both. Most people seem to be car camping of some form and they might as well take advantage of the fact. There's no need to sleep on the ground, have tiny tents, etc. Little dome tents are great for the backpack trek out, it's hard to over state the ability to stand up straight in tent if you can have it. Or the difference between even an real air mattress/cot and sleeping bag/sleep almost on the ground situation.

Hi Rex. Can you comment on the stove jack? Was that an option from the company, or did you have to install it? If it's your install any comments on how you did it would be great? Thanks.
@rexweisser7118
@rexweisser7118 6 лет назад
The company I purchased the stove from( Winnerwell) supplied the silicone jack which I then installed. There are several videos on RU-vid that can show you far better than I could ever try to explain. If you don't already have your tent I would call the tent company and have them install one while they are making it. A couple of other notes to those interested in a Springbar tent. They have all different sizes and will even work with you to design at tent to meet your needs if that is case. The "High Line" series is there price tent and made outside the US to there specifications. I don't know for certain but I think they are made to compete with the Kodiak China made) brand that do tend to run a little less $ than the American made version of the Springbar.

I shopped for cots several years ago. Can't recall if I saw Helinox. But either the legs got in the way of under cot storage, or the reviews said they squeaked, sagged or the fabric was too tight to pull over the ends. I ended up buy the pricey Exped Megamat, 4 inches thick, high R factor, pumps to perfect flatness. Even with back injury it's better than any 2k plus bed. At REI you can try them out. Comfy even on the floor but I need storage space under a cot. Will check out LL Bean and Helinox. Does yours have any of the bad features listed above???

Was so happy to see this video! Not ready yet to take any plunge, but have become part of a van dweller site and know it will be happening one day. The thing is...I have done years of backpacking previously...in the Canadian Rockies, and tenting to me is the indoor/outdoor experience that really gets you back to nature. I am definitely considering this as an option down the road! Thanks so much. I might have a small bed set up in my car in case I choose to be closer in to a city or somewhere I can't pitch my tent. Oh, and thank you for the name of this tent! Am going to be saving up right away for this! Love it!

What a beautiful tent! I love what she's doing. We're doing the same thing with an Outwell tent from Denmark. Like her tent, it's expensive, but built to last and great in foul weather. They test them for 70 mph winds and torrential rain. Our gear is in a tiny cargo trailer pulled by a Jetta manual transmission turbo diesel. So....yes....this CAN be done very comfortably in a tent.
