El Teo dió en éste combate muestra de maestría y caballerosidad. Sin alardes,lo que fue reconocido por los especialistas. Es y será uno de los boxeadores más grande de todos los tiempos.
Just a basic 3 round Pro against kids of the rest of the World 20 years as a amatuer 3 rounds the most he ever went..That not Legendary that's Unheard of Terrell Biggs just a Top 20 Professional
Stevenson was trained to fight as an amateur for amateur fights. If he had been trained as a professional and to fight professionally, he could have been another Ali !
Ali would have beaten Teofilo. If Foreman, Shavers, Norton, and Frazier couldn’t beat Ali (though Frazier did it once in three fights), Teofilo would have had a nightmare on his hands. Teofilo was a great fighter, but he wasn’t Ali. Holmes would have beaten Teofilo, too.
Stylistically, Ali would have been a terrible match up for Stevenson. Stevenson was too upright, dropped his left all the time, and his footwork was not great. Ali would start out jabbing the shit out of Stevenson, and then moving away easily when Stevenson tried to unload. Any time Stevenson was off balance, or careless, he'd eat a right cross. A puncher's chance at best - and Ali had faced bigger power guys.
Fighting Stevenson was like fighting a Pro. The dude was 31 years old and in his prime. The Cuban fighters were not allowed to go pro. 72, 76 & 80 Gold Medalist. Stevenson was no doubt huge in Cuba and content with his standing. It would have been interesting to see him at the Pro level. With the exception of the Communist blocked Countries Stevenson was a lot older than the majority of his opponents. He was a Man fighting boys. That's why it sucks that he never went Pro. I mean he's knocking out John Tate in 76 Olympics and Tate 3 years later is fighting for and Winning the WBA Version of the Heavyweight title. It's just a shame as he got older he was never able to go out on his on but then again if Don King or Bob Arum would have gotten a hold of him he probably wouldn't have made the money you think he would have. He probably would have went back broke. So in hindsight he probably was more richer in Cuba.
He was fighting for cuba not money and was happy with it. Best ever super heavy weight boxer from cuba was ballado he would beat him. But dies too fast
Chicken $hit that’s what he is he needed to show himself but he knew he only went 3 rounds fights and he tired anyway 15rds no way he’d make it if you’re the best you gotta beat the best Tate and Biggs and Clark and all the other kids he beat but he didn’t beat the best so he a Amateur good call brother
Tyson and Frazier? Earnie Shavers would’ve knocked out Teofilo Stephenson on his back laying him up right on the center of the ring. If you would’ve told Earnie Shavers that he was going to get in the ring with Stephenson for 3 rounds, Shavers with an a smile would’ve said “3 rounds? Great, that’s all I need. Because Shavers now does not have to worry about having stamina.
Interesting to see how little Biggs developed his style as a professional. I know there were very good reasons why he was pushed into a title shot so quickly, but he was definitely not given enough time to learn a pro style - he relied on natural ability. Enough to squeak past the likes of Bey, but Tyson....
In their prime , Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Bowe, Holyfield, Lewis, not unbeatable but very rarely lost. As I said….in their prime.
@@therumbleinthejunglee Real Deal? who did Stevenson Beat that was great? Nobody you're predicting..not on facts...You got to beat the best to be the best he never fought nobody great the Russian beat him twice...That's all ...Plan and simple.judge on facts not predictions. Who did he beat that was great? Biggs. Lol Stevenson if he hit you like.he did Biggs here hed knock anybody out but he never fought the best he was scared he could only fight 3 rounds and he tired if someone fought him back..Biggs did ok he got hit
@@chrisslaughter5552 shows how clueless you are he couldn’t come compete in America because the politics going on with Fidel Castro and Cuba siding with the Russians. Even Big George Foreman said Teófilo would become champion. He wasn’t scared of nobody.
Stevenson was probably closer to 6'6 inches. He was 3 inches above Ali when Ali went to Cuba. His measurements were probably 6'6 and 225 as a youngster and at 233-235 at his last days.
I think Teofilio was a giant ethically to remain an amateur boxer throughout his career. Don't know of another boxer or indeed an athlete that could refrain from professional competition. His career was sublime as Stella to maintain. Let's celebrate a man with scruples with a mighty punch from Cuba.
Ali was like a lot of great ( not the greatest) Heavyweight Champions… Most great Champs have about a 4-8 year shelf life until they age and the next great Champ comes along. The 80s and 90s had the most tough Heavyweights.
Not a shame at all. No need to fight in America professionally a place where values ethics and morality is unheard of and where money is the only God. No I am glad he didn't soil his character and that of Cuba by sinking to the low level of Western fake institutions.
@@trupa6940 Fidel no tienen las cojones. That's why Stevenson never came here to fight Ali. Fidel knew he would have either lost and shamed Cuba or defected and shamed Cuba.
Well, Dundee thought he had his next Ali in Biggs but it just didn’t work out. You know, stuff happens when you take too many punches, sometimes just taking one ruins a boxer’s day.
All these experts slating Biggs in the posts, claiming no heart etc. See how you fair after a crushing combo from the likes of Teofilo, Mike Tyson etc. Shake my head in disbelief 🙄
Everyone here pretending Stevenson would’ve beaten Ali! Lol why is it always ALI that everyone says some guy or other would beat? I’ll tell you why, because I WAS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMES!! 💥🥊💥🥊💥🥊💥
Damian was a top ten contender in the 80s don’t disrespect Francisco like that. Remember he was one of few boxers that gave Stevenson a L list is not long. No fighter in 70s wanted to do an exhibition fight with Stevenson! Not one. Stevenson back in 70s despite being an amateur was always thought to be one of top three heavyweights. Why would a fighter do an exhibition with a good probability of ending like Biggs. Stevenson right may have been strongest punch of any fighter in 70s So many fighters avoided him. He led life like royalty in Cuba. Why would you leave for the great unknown. Particularly when your family is there.

Allow me to be kind of silly: Stevenson would have been 36 y.o. in 1987, Mike Tyson would have been 21 y.o. in 1987. Let's say they fought in 1987 -- I don't see Tyson winning.
@@chrisslaughter5552 Stevenson had the reach. Tyson was a headhunter and Stevenson's experience would've won the day. It's an interesting hypothetical matchup.
@@drewhunkins7192 Brother He was Champion in 86 he would’ve destroyed Stevenson he’d got inside of him Stevenson wouldn’t got that touch of death right on Tyson then Tyson refused to get hurt.. Stevenson was a amateur both just opioions
@@chrisslaughter5552 You make a good point. However, I remember watching Tyson since 1987. Up until 21 y.o. Tyson really didn't fight that many great fighters. Stevenson (even at 36 y.o.) would have been by far the greatest fighter Tyson had seen up to that point in his young career. I respect your opinion, it would've been a fun matchup to see.
@@drewhunkins7192 With a American trainer they could have added punches to Stevenson’s arsenal and made him a great Professional he didn’t want the Best he didn’t beat the Best so he doesn’t get a win over our Heavyweight Champ Mike Tyson feel me but yes it would have been good to see him fight them good Pros the one thing Stevenson had he could count on is that touch of death right hand he always had a puncher’s chance against anybody our Professionals but he never beat any great fighters he got beat twice by the Russian Igor Vysotsky watch those fights that’s why I said Tyson would beat him I think Felix Savon was better than Stevenson Cuz he more rounded complete fighter Stevenson was a basic 3 punches jab right and a left hook...It’s his teachers fault he is legend in Amateur boxing
I always assumed Stevenson was THE greatest boxer of the 70's purely because that's what my Dad said. So this is the first time I have seen him fight. And to be honest, he is not very impressive. He's stiff, upright, and limited, like Frank Bruno.
It was unfair to compare Stevenson with those guys who went on to become world champions. Fact of the matter is it was Ali in '60; Frazier in '64 ; Foreman in '68; and Stevenson in '72. So there's a damn good chance had he turned pro there probably wouldn't have been a Leon Spinks..or a Larry Holmes?
@@thomashahn631 Holmes didn't know shit in '72. Took him 6 years to become decent. Do you know how much Stevenson could have absorb in 6 years? Hell even John Tate became a champion...and he couldn't carry the Cuban's jock-strap!
@@rayhoward9644 He's 31 years old here - not 21. He has some bad habits that would get him killed by the elites. Okay, he's much better then big John Tate - so what?
