I saw this in the theater as a kid and had no idea it was coming. As a 9 year old my mind was blown. Still one of my favorite twists I’ve seen in the theater.

@@darthphayde508 and the first take of him chasing down John on foot when he's on the dirt bike, he caught him. So in real life. John would have been dead. They literally had to tell him to slow down. And it wasn't just running and only breathing through the nose. It was being able to dead ass sprint and never be out of breath. To never show fatigue.

The guy that played the liquid metal T-1000 put a lot of work into this role. He practiced not blinking and running without moving his head, and gave an unearthly, alien and frightening feel to his single minded killing machine.

This movie blew people's minds with the special effects when it came out. Most people at the time had no idea computer effects like this were even possible.

The power of hard worked over practical effects with CGI as assistance instead of the full CGI messes with weird physics we have today. Everything has weight and feel to it. It's tremendous. The latest I can remember, Mad Max Fury Road, took the practical effects approach and it looks so damn good too. Head and shoulders above Disney movies mostly shot in front of a green screen.

Fun fact in case no one else mentioned it: there are two sets of twins in this film. The prison guard killed by the T-1000 was played by the actor's twin brother for that one scene. Linda Hamilton's twin sister is in every scene where you either see two Sarah Connors or one non-ripped Sarah Connor. Edited for typo.

There's also a deleted scene that occurs when the Terminator talks about his ability to learn & become human. In the extended scene, he explains that he needs to have a memory module in his head set from "read only" to "write". He powers down & Sarah removes the module from his head. She (briefly) considers smashing it with a hammer, but John convinces her not to, arguing that they need "their" Terminator to defeat the new Terminator. The scene is shot facing a "mirror" (actually an empty frame) from behind Sarah's back, with the Terminator seated in front of a table. The Sarah visible in the "mirror" is Linda Hamilton; the one whose back is being filmed is her sister. And you don't really need to see the subsequent movies. There's six movies and a TV series; they have about 1.5 movies worth of worthwhile content in them.

Back in '91 my friend avoided all the trailers before the movie came out, so the Arnold 'switch' was a surprise to him as well. Ever since I've been avoiding trailers for upcoming movies whenever possible.

I would continue with 3 and Salvation, not as memorable as the first two, but still good and enjoyable. I love Christian Bale as John Connor and the Mad Max visual tone as opposite with the Cameron's blue future (with pun intended). The last two I have refused to watch it. They look like shit.

I didn't mind the 3rd one which for you is the first one that doesn't exist ;-) To me it was different, in both a good and bad way, but for me it neatly tied up the viewers remaining questions, And that moment when you realise that "Judgement day is inevitable" was quite sobering The whole time I was waiting for the classic last minute win, only to realise that I was watching the beginning of the end......

I was personally banned from watching _any_ film that had an age rating older than I was; while friends at school were playing Resident Evil and watching Aliens and Terminator at 15, all I could do was read articles on them in Playstation Magazine. I had good parents, they just treated age restrictions as law. I've done a lot of catching up as an adult!

@@garrettrains3916 Her and her sister (Who are both borderline valley girls) are def. the sunny rom com and hallmark type. It is absolutely not shocking that they haven't seen these films. They both have very visceral reactions to horror and violence (even light stuff like the Shining). My mother is the exact same way. She outright refuses to watch anything with violence. And will full blown look away from the screen if she even suspects something like that is coming. IE the scene at the end of Sling Blade with the mower blade. They don't even show it, but she refused to look. Yes Terminator movies are iconic, but a robot from the future sent to slaughter humans def. doesn't sound like the type of movie these two would go out of their way to watch. Or even consider.

The special effects for this move were goundbreaking ! And the STUNTS ! OMG THE STUNTS ! That stunt Arnie walking the back of the little pickup up to the hood of the semi and shooting into the T-1000 !... Unbelievable ! And the Helicopter flying through the car tunnels and the whole Cyberdyne building was a fake facade built on a warehouse that was blown of the old building. And the Arnie Harley jump... Just a stunt person's extravaganza ! We don't really realize just how much these guys put their bodies on the line for the perfect shot of the perfect scene... Kudos to the stunt people out there !

Everyone should definitely check out the extended version of this movie! I actually get surprised when I found out that not too many people know that there even is one. It fills in a lot of blanks and actually has a lot of great scenes! It even has one with Kyle Reese! There is also an optional alternate ending as well. It makes the movie pretty long (I want to say it adds about an extra 40-odd minutes), but it's so worth it.

I remember watching this when i was like 6 with my parents and my mom realized the twist that Robert Patrick is evil because when he showed up he killed a cop instantly while Arnold didn’t. My dad didn’t think of it until the mall situation. My dad always hated my mom could pick up on things like that and is always right.

Robert Patrick was SO good as the T-1000. Rather than a massive physique, he used his movement and facial expressions to convey the threat, and he did a fantastic job.

Robert Patrick is what James Cameron visioned The Terminator to be in the first movie. Not a brutish character like Arnie, but a cat-like robot, who was extremely agile etc.

Part of what's truly menacing about Patricks T1000 is that it's so NEUTRAL. As opposed to the malicious, ranting, raving, angry villain trope, the T1000 is almost banal. Shoot him a bunch of times, crash him in a truck into a building, freeze him, shatter him, make him remelt and reassemble and everything, and it's like "Sigh, are you done? Can you all just die already?". The T1000 even when thwarted is just mildly annoyed, aggravated, disappointed. But then on to the next attempt to find/kill the target.

and I thought Arnold originally wanted to play Kyle Reese (and auditioned for that role) in the first film. But James recommended he be the antagonist. Maybe even at that time, he knew he'd be doing a sequel and Arnold would have his chance as the hero second time around.

the one instance that is quite good is that the psychiatrist for Sarah had two Terminators walk past him. One when he exited the police station before the shootout, unbeknownst to him, and when the T-1000 ran past him after he melted through the metal gate, proving Sarah correct.

@@curtiszyr According to the Sarah Connor Chronicles, he does go nuts. He becomes a believer in Judgment Day and begins torturing people he thinks are also Terminators. Meanwhile, according to T3, he is a trauma therapist and meets with Katherine Brewster after she escapes from John and the T-850. The moment he sees the T-850 he runs from the scene. I didn't mind T3. I thought Scott Stahler's performance of John Connor was ok, nothing great. Edward Furlong did a much better 7 year old John Connor.

What I find odd is that the psychiatrist was there at the police station in T1. He had met Sarah before she became GI Jane right before seeing a Terminator take out the entire station. He should've known there was something more to the story even if he didn't believe in Judgement Day.

@@kobayashimaru8114 For those who saw T3, Dr. Silberman is briefly in that, as well. EVEN THEN... he didn't appear to buy into the idea that Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor might be right about the temporal machine and judgment day. When he sees the T3 T-850, he runs from the scene.

The nuke nightmare scene hit different for a lot of people when this movie came out, because the generations that watched it lived through the cold war, where they were always afraid of nuclear strikes. The scene visualized the scenario for them.

Honestly, we weren't all that afraid of nuclear strikes. That sort of thing was just part of the background, always there but usually not something you thought about. If nukes were popping off somewhere in the world occasionally, that probably would have made it a little more real. As it was, it was just too theoretical and huge a concept to worry about. If it happened, it happened and you'd never have to worry about anything again. I think to most people, the nuke scene wasn't personally threatening, it was disturbing in its own right, just as it still is the first time someone sees it now.

@@hamletksquid2702 having grown up then I can assure you that many of us were afraid. All those movies, whether specifically about nuclear annihilation like the Terminator or The Day After, or “let’s beat the Commies” stuff like Rambo and Invasion USA and Red Dawn, were all a reflection of our common anxiety. It’s why so much music was about that stuff at the time too. People got on with their lives just like we do now with mass shootings now a common occurrence, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t all aware of it. The only thing about T2 in particular is that it was maybe a but late because the fall of the Berlin Wall and Iron Curtain made that particular worry less pressing.

I always felt that LInda Hamilton deserved a best supporting actress award for her role in this movie. She metamorphosed into this lady who was courageous, strong, vulnerable, and really screwed up, mentally and emotionally.

It think it’s more a reference to the first film, not some sort of genius idea by John. Future John wouldn’t know what Reese said to Sarah unless she told it to young John, and then he witnessed it again when Arnold said it to her. It’s a self-contained paradox, so there would be nothing really brilliant about it.

@@anti0918 Or, a simpler explanation is that when Sarah told young John all about his father, she only knew Reese for a couple days, so she likely told him everything he'd ever said to her, including that line. Then John could have told the T100 to say it to his mom to instantly call back that memory of safety for her. It was not future-John who told the T100, it was teenage John, on the way to the asylum. No paradox... well, not for this part, anyway. ;-] Note: Of course, this is not in the film, but it makes sense that it would have happened off camera. There is no other reason for the T100 to have used exactly those words. Indeed, there is no reason to think that future John would have thought of it since he sent the T100 to protect himself, not his mom. James Cameron is the brilliant one! ;-]

@@robertcartier5088 That's your, "simpler", explanation?.. Good grief& it's just Cameron inserting a well-executed fan service recall/callback to the previous film... Writers love to do that. "On your left", from the Avengers movies is a good one - and just about everything in the Back to the Future series brilliantly calls back to itself. It's knowing - but it's a gag that's between the writer and audience and totally outside of the action and plot of the movie and invisible to the characters: that's the whole point. It's probably a mistake to overthink these things.

The end is sad because the terminator was the closest thing to a father that John had ever had in his life. It sucks too because they basically have to go on the run from the law because all proof of the terminator was destroyed.

you care because you spend a lot of time with getting them established, so by the time the action starts we care about them because we got to know them. Cameron did this with the first movie, and it's the reason the latest movie sucked, we spent 5 minutes with them before all hell broke lose, so you didn't find yourself giving a damn if they got killed or not

@@booshank2327 Not only the essence. t1000 was legit scary. I saw T2 when I was really young and there are scenes in this movie I was afraid to watch. Like when Arnold removes the skin from his arm and or when t1000 puts a spike through that guard's eye. I'm way to desensitised now, but for some people that's friggin intense. Especially in such a well shot movie that makes these things look real. And it still holds up today ! That's crazy.

Essentially, the clone tool was added to PhotoShop because of this movie. It was extensively used to remove support and safety cables. Also, when Robert Patrick crouches down at the beginning, his manly bits were dangling visibly. So they had to photoshop them away. Robert Patrick called it "digital willy removal".

The stunt where the Terminator runs across the pick-ups bed and jumps onto the semi's hood was pretty much filmed as we see it, with no safeties or anything. James Cameron said (in the DVD commentary, about 10 years later or so) that he would not approve doing this stunt again.

Robert Patrick based his head movements of the T1000 on a bald eagle, he also trained himself to run at high speeds without blinking or looking phased. Apparently he trained himself to run so fast that he started to catch up with the dirt bike, which is the shot used after John jumps the curb with his dirt bike.

The end which makes no sense. At the moment where they stop judgement day, there is no time maschine which send back Kyle, so John never exists in the first place.

The weirder part is how Dyson copied the chip from the first terminator, meaning no one ever actually discovered that technology. It's a copy of itself conceived of by nobody.

@@Corn_Pone_Flicksno one cares how timetravel actually works, what matters is how it works in the Terminator movies and in the movies it works singular, like back to the future, change things in the past, change the future, thats why skynet wants to kill john in the past. So your weirder part is not the problem. T3 explains it. Dyson take the technology from the first terminator and the judgement day starts sooner. In T3 there is no Chip but the Humans invent skynet anyway so judgement day happens inevitable. The Events of T1 where the Chip left accelerate the invention of Skynet and the Events of T2 just correct the timeline.

2:20 the reason this looks so good was because the robots were filmed separately with stop motion and they protected tht recording onto a screen on the set. This is a very old technique use d as far back as the 40s and 50s but it generally looked like crap because the projection was terrible. So you'd have a nice crisp film with very grainy action scenes, jason and the argonauts come to mind. This is actually similar to how they filmed the mandalorian but that wasn't projected, it was just played on screens and they used a video game engine to skew the image based on where the camera is, it's pretty interesting you should look it up if it sounds appealing to you.

On top of that, the helicopter under the bridge scene, all of the camera operators refused to film that scene as they did not want to witness the pilot's real death if it went badly, so James Cameron actually filmed that scene himself with the camera!! It was a REAL helicopter, with a real pilot flying it!

We love Carly, such a sensitive but bright and wonderful soul. Must do more reactions with her, you two are perfect together. The closeness and familiarity shines so bright with you two as well as being such a delight to see together. And on a side note, Sarah realized she was about to do exactly what the Terminators were trying to do to her and John, and that she almost became like them. Having said that, if Miles didn't duck when that truck hit his ankle he would've been toast, splat goes his head on that computer monitor, a perfect example of how life is all about timing and the choices you make.

Regarding time travel and changes, the MCU taught us (i know not the first to do so - just the most recent so I'm referencing it) that there could just be another timeline. Also, the whole point is we didn't see Skynet come into being yet so T3 showed that. Again, just saying it exists so if you want, go see it. or don't. I am vehemently agreeing with avoiding Salvation, Genesis and Dark Fate, though because they're all just bad.

I remember the audience got really into the fight at the hospital with Sarah and the staff, moving over to the T1000 walking through the jail bars, head exploding, forming back together, dripping out of the elevator ceiling in full silver mode and the chase after. The final battle drew the audience in as well but not quite the middle section.

actually, 18:34 Sarah was supposed to take the chip out of the T800 and programme it to make it learn, and she wanted to destroy the chip and john stopped her. this was in the 154 minute cut and it really helped develop sarah's personality

When you said that "this was the ending it needed", that's exactly how James Cameron intended it to be. There's alternate ending scene in which Sarah Connor is on the same park from her nightmares, now an old woman, recording her thoughts while John is playing with his daughter. Cameron thought that it was clear enough that humanity had won and averted the apocalypse so he changed to the shot of the road with a similar narration, as a way of showing that humanity had an open road in their future.

Yeah, it was always intended to be done with T2. The studios for years bugged him to come back to make more money and he always told them his story was finished. I believe Cameron lost the rights so they made the sequels without him.

The face-licking scene was the casting scene for the warden's actor. The casting agent lady was not happy about having her face licked by applicants all day. Also, when the warden has to hit Linda Hamilton at the beginning, she told him to really hit her. He didn't bring it over himself and held back though, so they had to repeat the scene too often, which was harder on Linda than just being hit once for real. She was so pissed about this that when it's her turn later, she really hit him with the broom handle and broke his nose.

This movie, Empire Strikes Back, and Godfather 2 are what I consider to be the best sequel movies of all time. LOTR would count, except those were planned as a trilogy from the outset, they were even all being made at the same time so it can't count. You could kind of say the same about Star Wars and Godfather except back then there was no preplanned movie franchise the way there is now.

Robert Patrick (T1000 - liquid terminator) for the filming of this film went through (among others) 2 basic and difficult training. Running and walking like a robot - non-human movements and without emotions on the face. And most importantly - very difficult - firing a pistol with unblinking eyes. In my opinion - Robert Patrick's Terminator is a real machine...

Patrick also practiced extensively to be able to sprint after the bike without breathing visibly and to be able to shoot his pistol without flinching, both of which gave tremendous credibility to the impression that he's an inhuman machine.

You are so lucky to have got to see this without knowing Arnold was the good guy. Even when it came out they spoiled that surprise in the trailers so it didn't hit as well for most people.

@@PopcornInBed Because they had a line of toys and action figures to sell to kids for this R-rated movie. You can’t really show the toys fighting eachother without spoiling it, and there was money to be made!

@@PopcornInBed At the time, Arnold had become a big icon that kids loved, so parents groups were angry that Schwarzenegger was playing a villain again. The second trailer spoiled his being good simply to get the "outrage" to stop.

You both are underrated gems on youtube. You are a great team at reacting. I saw this in theaters when I was only 8 with my parents and this was cutting edge CGI then as opposed to claymation. I remember when the camera panned out to show that woman with the knife arm people gasped. Looks tame today.

I’d recommend pretending there are no other Terminator movies and just make this the definitive ending of the franchise. You’ll be happier for it.

me and my best friend skipped school to go see this it really holds a special place in my memories because he past away when he was 32 i remember us both agreeing the three most powerful moments in the movie 1. where the kids where playing cowboy and indians and what was said about human nature 2.where he shot at the cops and it showed 0 kills 3. the end where he tells john i know now why you cry but it is something i can never do this one was so awesome even though i like most the movies 1 and 2 are by far the best

@@Leon83MCNICHOL The alternative ending is meant to end the story completely without possible plans for sequel, but that ending looks pretty stupid imo. I see why it wasn't in the original cut. It just looked kinda ridiculous. But the other originally deleted scenes you can see in director's cut are pretty cool.

This is amazing seeing someone who doesn’t know the twist with the terminators at the beginning! The trailers spoiled it immediately, plus the nonstop toy commercials targeted at kids (for an R-rated movie) where Arnold is trying to protect John from the T1000. It took a generation for someone to actually get to experience the movie the way it was intended.

Not really, I can tell you for sure, whole former Soviet Union saw this as it was intended on pirated video cassettes. Not many saw the advertisement for the movie.

Selling the toys to kids was a no brainer. Everyone knew as soon as the film came out on video, all the family will sit down and watch it together. Then the kids get the toys for Christmas

One of my fav Arnold movies was Predator, as I saw that with no idea at all what it was about. I thought it was going to be just another Arnold the soldier movie. Ohh, so wrong I was. Definitely a movie, like T2, best watched completely unspoiled.

Yeah, the era of making toys from violent R-rated movies like T2 and Robocop was weird. On the other had, James Cameron's writing is usually pretty childish, so it makes sense for Aliens and the Terminator franchise.

Fun fact Robert Patrick the guy that played the evil liquid terminator learned to run and breath through his nose and ran faster than the mini bike. So Robert Patrick had to slow down some.

The woman that played john connor's foster mother was Vasquez in Aliens. Both Linda Hamilton and the cop who was killed at the snack machine had identical twins who both starred in this movie.

Watching this reaction I noticed that the T-800, while being an older model, was reprogrammed and could continue to learn making him more adaptable to situations. More methodical and fluid in combat scenarios. Whereas the T-1000 was still only programmed to move forward and kill putting himself up on that platform and walking right in to Arnold’s grenade. He never really had a leg up on them because he was always pursuing

Trivia: the foster mom is the same actress who plays Vasquez in the movie Aliens. The SWAT officer at 27:46 is Dean Norris, the actor who later played the role of Hank Schrader in Breaking Bad.
