Terminator 2: Judgment Day Video Essay
For decades cinema has been awash with sequels and very rarely do they live up to the original. In this episode I share my love for arguably one of the beset sequels of all time. Action maestro James Cameron, changed the face of blockbuster filmmaking forever with T2, bringing in audiences and creating one of the most infleuential movies of the 1990s. Let me know what you think of the video in the comments.

I’ve seen it on its 25th and 30th anniversary both times remastered and it looks incredible and the sound in the chase scenes is so meaty. The beauty of doing stunts for real I guess, gives everything weight and makes it real. Thanks for the comment.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a most pivotal example of how the first sequel in a film franchise may hold up the best like The Empire Strikes Back, Superman II, X2: X-Men United and The Dark Knight. Thank you for another very helpful video essay and welcome back.

Nice comment, thanks a lot. I quiet agree, I recently rewatched X2 and it definitely held up well especially at a time where we are inundated with comic book movies. It definitely holds its own. I guess a lot of the sequels you mentioned had really firm foundations with a strong first film.

I don't know why people think that the movie is ambiguous about who is the protector and who is the hunter. If hearing "bad to the bone" when arnold gets his threads and prepares to leave the bar doesn't indicate clearly that he's a good guy this time (through the humor that stems from the music, that is) then the eerie music, Robert Patrick's stone cold face and lack emotion, as well as the fact that he kills a cop easily, should make it beyond clear who's there for which purpose.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 2 года назад
That’s a fair point, but obviously there is some play on that. Someone mentioned that this was already spoiled by a particular T2 trailer at the time. “Bad to the Bone” wasn’t that much of a giveaway as summer blockbusters and action did have elements of a lighter touch or a sense of humour at times. If I’m honest, I never thought Arnie was the bad guy when I first saw it but I’m sure Cameron liked to play it as ambiguous as he could.
@Vaporvice84

@@MovieBirthdays I had already heard the song used in the opening credits of "Problem Child". A kids comedy that had come out the year before. So I guess even at 7 years old, I had already imprinted that song as humorous in that context. I'm nitpicking but I would've liked it if Cameron had allowed Brad Fiedel to use more of the cues and the overall tone/style of the score to the first film.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 2 года назад
@@Vaporvice84 lol, I remember it from that too. You’re right would have been nice to have more from Fiedel, the score is surprisingly minimalist, especially in the truck/motorbike chase. It amazing how stripped down T2 feels compared to modern blockbusters. It’s feels so simple.

Great to see you back and with a great video to a bona fide classic. T1 is a low budget genre film (watch it in scratched 35mm, believe me that is the best way to watch it IMO) T2 however is an ambitious and dazling big budget extravaganza. What always impressed me about T2 is its ambition, it is not only the SFX, but the whole tone, the pacing and the feel. Gone is the group of superheroes, and in comes three characters who spend their time on the road (like you mentioned the family aspect and the theme of destiny) Compound this with the bruising set pieces and you’ve got a film that goes beyond the typical summer blockbuster. But also it is the production itself that is ambitious. Cameron was only given a short window of time to film and edit this film to meet the July deadline, not to mention this was produced by the legendary Carolco Pictures who were very much the king of the indie Hollywood production houses at the time and were very much a hands off type of company. Shame they aren’t around these days.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the video. Great point about T1, I’ve seen it projected in 35mm at the Prince Charles and it’s a grungy b-movie classic. I’m always surprised how good it looks when I see it on TV all cleaned up, it looks like it was made yesterday. It’s funny you mention Carolco, when I uploaded this video it got flagged for copyright in many different territories by different distribution companies and that when I realised that T2 was essentially an indie film (albeit a big budget one). When Carolco folded I think the rights went all over the place. But a great company behind some of my all time favourites such as Total Recall and Basic Instinct.
@spaceodds1985
@spaceodds1985 2 года назад
@@MovieBirthdays I can imagine the rights being an issue. T2, the first three Rambo films, Cliffhanger, Basic Instinct, Total Recall all indie’s. Not to mention they are responsible for some of the most interesting horror films of the latter half of the 80s, Angel Heart and Jacob’s Ladder (technically that’s a 90s film, but still) In any case T2 was the first film to have a $100 million budget, not to mention the advertising campaign it had was unique, as exemplified by the teaser trailer Stan Winston directed and made at a time when a teaser was a teaser.
@MovieBirthdays

I think my favoite new think i picked up from your observation is Sarah Connnor in a trench coat is channeling Kyle Reese. I've seen this movie since i was a kid in the 90s and that one detail truly holds so much weight - after she "falls" into becoming a heartless terminator herself while trying to execute Dyson, John saves her and brings her back to humanity...she cries in shame...now with new purpose and a real mission that can actually save the future, destroying the research lab, she is now in a trenchcoat almost identical to Kyle Reese - we are back to guerrilla warfare, back to everything that changed her innocent life in the first place, back to take revenge on the Future that came back in time and killed her love Kyle...that gave her John...it's all full circle. This will end it all. I have NEVER considered how in that new plan after failed Dyson execution and new plan that really might work....how she is thinking of Kyle Reese and really doing this in his name just as much as she is doing it for herself and the future and John. The trench coat....it just fits to perfectly for that moment, approaching the research lab. and i've never noticed it before. SO much analysis and meaning. thank you.
@CSM100MK2
@CSM100MK2 2 года назад
perhaps even more meaningful if you consider the deleted scene of her imaging Kyle visiting her in the mental hospital - which was sadly cut but actually gives greater impetus to her wanting to escape, being reminded of the "reality" of the future threat and her singular purpose to protect John - then if that scene wasn't cut, chronologically she would next be interviewed by the cops about the Arnold Terminator in the Mall looking like her past assailant and does she know anything - if the John scene was included, it would greater explain her direct immediate need to escape, to pretect John, now that she has seen a new Terminator has come back. I mean he looks like just the one she destroyed. Which later comes full circle when they rescue her from the hospital, and she screams in terror as Arnold comes out of the elevator. its ALL related. the Inciting incident that makes her choose at that day to try an escape for real, and it should have started with the Kyle Reese dream sequence of her visiting her IN HIS TRENCHCOAT AND SNEAKERS in her hospital room.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 2 года назад
Nicely written, really conveys the characters psychology really well. I think this is what gives T2 its power is that that the characters are not just firing guns and trying to survive, they have deep rooted trauma that they motivated by and trying to overcome. I always found T2 so emotionally powerful and watching it again it still has that power. It was only when I watched it again recently that I noticed the trench coat and that unlocked how James Cameron so meticulously crafted this film not just it’s complex plot but the details in costume and their meaning. It shows the subtlety in his work that often goes unnoticed.

For many Terminator 2 should've been the end of franchise as a whole since the films that came up failed miserably in living up to the measuring stick set by the 1st 2. At it's heart, the Terminator Universe served as a warning of what happens when humanity puts Artificial Intelligence in charge. Because they were kick ass and able to be unashamed in their maternal instincts(which is the opposite of todays action heroines in their creation) in the most extreme of circumstances beyond their control, even by male audiences, Sarah Connor & Ellen Ripley are the most idolised of action heroines. The T-1000 is the perfect antagonist. Not simply because he is the polar opposite of the T-800, or even the fact that he is made from mercury based Mimetic poly alloy as in liquid metal and is a virtually indestructible, relentless killing machine. But because his behaviour is equally as humane as any normal human being. Even at it's darkest. At Connors foster parents house his kills screamed of a "shut the fuck up" style of annoyance, he stole a bike cause he considered it cool and never fully changed his appearance which meant he had his own sense of identity. With Sarah by the factory, he was like a cat toying with his mouse before the kill which makes him all the more sadistic. Even in death when dropped into the molten Iron, the T-1000 struggled like someone who valued his own life above all else. All of which is quite the paradox. The T-1000 is capable of thinking independently outside it's initial programming which it even more dangerous to Skynet itself.
@MovieBirthdays
@MovieBirthdays 2 года назад
Great breakdown, I love your observations on the T-1000 especially him preserving his life over others. We see that as he sheds and almost sacrifices all his previous transformations hoping that it might save or restore him. Also it was a nice touch to bring the maternal instinct to the fore in Aliens, creating an epic and primal dual between two mothers.
