Invasion of the Body Snatchers 65th Anniversary Video Essay
This video essay looks back at the Sci-Fi classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”. Directed by Hollywood maverick Don Siegel (Dirty Harry) and based on the book by Jack Finney. The movie is a chilling combination of horror and science fiction which was a cut above schlockier alien invasion fare from the 50s, partly due to its ambiguous down beat ending but also it has proven to be a timeless allegory for society’s growing fears and flaws. In this video not only do I look at the original I also revisit the various remakes which in their own way have some chilling observations and predictions about society as well.

Your best video to date. Invasion really is a timeless classic, not only because it is a great film, but because its a plot that can be re-adapted to fit different themes and different eras. IMO Philip Kaufman's remake is the best adaptation due to not only its handheld and urgent aethetic, but due to its themes of post Watergate mistrust and also its themes of alienation and how society is looking to fill in an empty void, in this case through self help. Siegel's film of mistrust, paranoia and its critique of consumerism is timeless, these are themes that have plagued so called first world societies since the end of WW2. But Kaufman's film resounds today, society is still looking to fill in a void, only these days instead of self analysis books, its self analysis tools like social media. When the pods invade in Kaufman's remake, it takes away the despair and anxiety thus rendering humanity to be brainless vessels, but ultimatley lonely and, no pun intended, alienated. This IMO has become more prevelent today with modern society, loneliness and despair has reached a zenith due to lockdown, but in reality it has been creeping for decades. Our dependence on technology and communication has seperated physical interaction more and more. Abel Ferrera's remake is not perfect but the fact that you mention the undertones of enviromental issues on how previous generations have polluted the world also rings true now with the ongoing debate of overpopulation. The themes of generational divide and mistrust of adults also ring true, even more so then it did in the early 90s when the film was made. The mistrust of the boomer generations by Gen X's and Millenuals, is now more vocal than it ever was thanks to issues such as political populism (i.e. Brexit, Trump etc.) and the straining of resources and services that the boomer generation supposedly indulge in, and future generations will need to pay for, bringing the thematic concerns full circle right back to Siegel's original with the critique of consumerism. Cannot wait for your next video. Keep up the great work. P.S What are your thoughts on The World’s End?

Amazing feedback and analysis. As always you hit the nail on the head. I love the Kaufman adaptation best of all too and didn’t go into too much depth because I want to do a video on it in the future, great observation about the self help never caught onto that. Nice to see the original getting some love on the channel, it might have some aspects that date it in terms of the b-movie style narration (which I love) but it has a great atmosphere and great downbeat ending.

Thanks. It’s definitely a film that stays relevant so much so that the most recent one still had some merit and is worth watching. Glad I can help with the viewing. 👍

Your thought provoking premise for linking the warning in the film (that fell on deaf ears/closed minds) of a clandestine infiltration to that of current (and most likely future) real world vulnerabilities and dangers is disturbing and apposite.

Thanks, it’s the main aspect of what made the film so appealing to revisit - a frightening glimpse into the past and the future as you said.

Definitely, the 70s version is arguably better than the original. It expanded the premise and added a sense of realism that made it terrifying. Not to mention those screams.

We showed this movie to my niece Emily when she was only 4 years old. She called them the 'Body Snappers'. Emily fell asleep during the movie. My father had a big plant pod in the kitchen, a little bigger than a coconut, and he put it next to Emily to find when she woke up. Dad was a maniac. Emily was not scarred for life. She grew up beautiful and very smart.
