some scholars believe the terracotta warriors was built for 宣太后 by his son. 宣太后 is great grandma of 秦始皇(the first emperor). she is the first woman in Chinese history to use the title "太后"(a title for emperor's mother). there's a Chinese tv drama called 芈月传 tells about her story.

The terracotta warrior site is only a part of the entire mausoleum system, which mimicked the entire central government under the compound. There are still new discoveries from time to time.

What an impressive sight these terra cotta warriors. Especially if you imagine they were built over 2000 years ago by the first emperor of unified China. The craftmanship that went into this army is unbelievable. The coolest thing is that there are still so many new things being discovered every day. They haven't even been in the tomb of the emperor of which it is thought that there are treasures as well as prototypes of palaces etc. In the coming years and decennia, the site will probably become much bigger. This is really a top see sights if you come to china in 2019

And there are said to be traps inside the emperor's tomb as well! Scientists haven't gone in there yet but they did send in some robots or probes, which detected mercury levels which were dozens of times higher than the normal range. The emperor was pretty serious about securing his tomb, it seems. Maybe they should send in Indiana Jones? 🤠

Pit 2 actually present the details of how the army are being structured when preparing for war. I rented the audio guide while I was there and the introduction given was extremely detailed, even explained what those "grooves" in the pit are for. It was pretty educational and gave an insight on the intelligence of the ancient people. 😊 Actually I personally recommend to start with pit 1 as it displays how the place was discovered by a farmer and you can see a full array of the armies. Then move on to pit 2 and 3 for the more detailed explanation of why the armies are arranged in that manner. At least that works better for me. My 2 cents worth. 😁 P/s: I loveeeee your videos. Looking forward to new videos soon. 💖

Loving your videos! Love your positive energies and how you constantly look up facts about new things. We Chinese usually joke about how you can randomly throw a brick in Beijing and hit a government official; just as easily as you can put a shovel anywhere in the ground and find an ancient tomb in Xi'an. I know that you have already left China but if you were to visit again I'd recommend the museum in Xi'an (I think it's the state museum of Shaanxi Province) and a few newer tomb sites of Han Emperors that are more interesting in my opinion. Btw what are the music pieces at 3:50 and 5:15? I'd love to find out more about the artist.

I hope to go there some day, but I imagine it is very expensive to travel in China and probably will never be able to go there. To me this tomb and the warriors reveal a mystery of the human condition as to when the mind-set changed away from symbols actually being regarded as living beings. Now it is all seen as fiction, but then very intelligent people believed clay figures would somehow become actual warriors of protection. Now they are all a curiosity, a subject of awe over the creation of such an elaborate tomb.
@NaickKim
@NaickKim 3 года назад
Depends on what you call expensive of course, but we traveled China on approx 60eur per day for two people and you could definitely do cheaper if needed. We don't travel very fast so that keeps costs lower. Lodging outside of Beijing is quite affordable and you can find nice rooms between 10-20 euro per night or sleep in a dorm for very cheap. We paid 9.5 eur per night for a double room in Xi'an for example. Food can be had cheaply at 1-3 usd per meal. It is an incredible country to visit and this site should be very high up on anyone's bucket list.

One suggestion for your pronunciation in Chinese "q": It is actually read as "ch". Try it on the name of the first emperor "qin shi huang" or city "chong qin". You would be very close. 😁

Thanks a lot! We didn't know that. We tried to learn a few words, but outside of Ni Hao or Xièxiè, nobody understand a word of what we say.
@Jay-hf9jw
@Jay-hf9jw 4 года назад
@@NaickKim you are welcome. I figured out you already knew how to pronounce "x" because you read Xi An correctly. Yes it is read as "sh". People don't understand you expect Nihao, or xiexie, that's probably because of intonation. The four intonations in Chinese are very important and confusing. Different intonations for the same pronunciation means totally different things. For example, "ma" first intonation means mother, second means numb, third means horse, fourth means scold or verbally abuse. So it's complicated.... Just listen to others and keep trying. As a non native English speaker I struggled too. I still remember the first time I asked to buy some tomatoes in USA with a British accent. No one understood me. Later I found out intonation is actually more important than pronunciation for local people to understand.
@NaickKim
@NaickKim 4 года назад
Thank you for the tips. The 'ma', example is very funny haha. If you say it wrong, you call your mother a horse hahaha. 'My horse is a really good cook'. It our language, which it Dutch, 'ma' also means mother. I agree it is not easy to pronounce a new language correctly. A lot of languages have different sounds, that do not exist in other languages, so it is difficult to learn them.
@NaickKim
@NaickKim 4 года назад
What we have noticed though, is that people pronounce xiexie differently in Shanghai, Xi'an and Beijing. In some area's they same more 'sh' and in some area's it is more like 'ks' or 'tsj'. Is this a local variation?
@Jay-hf9jw
@Jay-hf9jw 4 года назад
@@NaickKim You are from Dutch. Welcome! Yes. every place has its dialect. My hometown is Suzhou next to Shanghai, so our dialects are close but different. General speaking, the northern dialects are more close to Mandarin, and the southern dialects have more variety. I could not understand people in guangdong or Fujian province if people talk in their dialects. The good thing is that (1) the written language is the same (2) most people especially young generation all speak Mandarin

Qin = name of the dynasty Shi = first Huangdi = ruler/emperor Qin Shi Huangdi =the first emperor of Qin dynasty QIN is where the Europeans took the name CHINA from, so it is read as CHIN not as KIN.... the info about this tomb of the emperor and the terracotta warriors is found in the "Book of Annals" written by Sima Qian.. around 100yrs after the fall of the Qin dynasty. Sima Qian is a historian of the succeeding dynasty, the Han. Han is where the Han Cinese come from.... yw

The original Terracotta warriors were colorful ,with decorated surfaces from different metal ingredients. Unfortunately those ingredients were easily oxygenated after almost 2 thousand years' burial under the caves. It is why they are grey as u see,the digging work of left caves was stopped as well.More advanced preserve tech is in need until digging work restart.
