Terringzean Castle is a ruin located near Cumnock in East Ayrshire. The unusual 14th century octagonal tower is similar to that at Mugdock Castle. It is pronounced 'Tringan' locally and was once also known as Crawfordstone Castle.
Its because in that word the z isn't really z it is a yogh pronounced j or nj in Scots. Early printers didn't have a yogh so used to use the z in place of it. Same reason Dalziel Menzies etc are not pronounced as they appear.
