6:39, as we have said before, the fact that an EV catches fire is not the issue, the problem is that you cannot put the fire out and the car and anything around it is screwed.
Also its only a tiny percent of road users who drive electric cars, so of course there is going to be less of them catching fire. A more telling metric would be the percentage of petrol cars in current use Spontaneously combusting vs the percentage of electric cars in current use spontaneously combusting.
@@rocketmunkey1 The thousands of Kia And Hyundai fires were due to defects in the ABS module, they were electrical fires, I saw one do it in a parking lot.

Another fair comparison would be comparing same-age car fires, since old-age is certainly a contributing factor in making fires more likely, for example making rubber fuel lines more brittle and prone to cracking, or wearing down the insulation of cables... Comparing a 15 year old (or more) ICE car fire with a brand new EV fire is, to me, comparing apples to oranges.
In my 44 years on this earth, I've only seen 3 burnt out petrol cars (Ford Cortina MK3 Estate, Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, and Volvo 340). Two were the result of arson, and one was unknown. However, in the last 12 months alone, I've lost count of the number of EVs I've seen that have caught fire due to thermal runaway; And the vast majority of them were Teslas. EV fires are not as rare as EVangelists like to make out.
I have never seen a car on fire. But a coworkers car was destroyed in arson (the person put his car on fire, to get his own car on fire to make it look like an accident)
I live in Cardiff and went pass a burning car only last week, not an ev so it won't get reported by every news reporter or social media person. Petrol / Diesel cars burn as well. When you say you've seen do you mean when you have been out or seen reported on tv or SM? By the way this has been only the 2nd car I have personally seen in my 64 years on this earth.
@@tedbearfudge I've personally seen a lot of burnt out EVs, far too many to count. The media don't actually report EV fires very often, as the government have issued a D Notice on them according to a reporter for our local paper. Last year, a Tesla Model Y caught fire a few streets from my home. Took out 3 terrace houses, and 5 cars. Nobody was hurt, but the story never made the news.
As an ex-landlord I know that some tenancy agreements now completely ban any form of recharging on site. Commercial insurance companies are turning the screws and frankly it's understandable on safety grounds.
@@CosmicSeeker69 my landlord refuse to allow ev charging where I live. That includes the estate that he works at too which is let out to the public. Mind it's not like an EV would manage to get up here anyway.
@@tobyinspain you don't need an ocean to put out a battery fire from a phone or cordless drill. All of them do pose a risk but I can put out a phone fire with my tiny car extinguisher. Can't put out and ev fire with one! Need an ocean for EVs when they get the magic blue smoke.
I used to carry a fire extinguisher in my petrol cars - at least if I had a fire, I had a good chance of putting it out if the correct fire fighting method was used. How many EV drivers have extinguishers in their vehicles? I'd say none, as there is absolutely no chance of putting out a fire. If it takes 40,000 (?) gallons of water to even subdue an EV fire, the average 1kg extinguisher won't do anything! 🚗🧯🔥👩🚒👨🚒🧑🚒🚒
The botfarm failed to mention that petrol and diesel cars don't catch fire parked in your driveway, garage, parking lot or on the street. They catch fire driving when a hose breaks and the engine is hot. The petrol or diesel still being pumped by the fuel pump. How many of the 239 ev fires were cars just parked. And what's the percentage of ev fires compared to the number of EVs. Not compared against all cars on the road.
I've actually seen a parked ICE Vehicle catch fire at the engine compartment (in front of a police substation). The owner said they had recently paid Midas Muffler shop to install a catalitic converter & wondered if that was the culprit.
That's just false...I witnessed a fire for a car parked at a Laundromat. Oil or fuel leaks can start fires. Unfortunately with turbo direct injection engines, there is a possibility of either. EV fires do suck, and while I have a better chance of falling out of a Boeing, the fear is real. Especially when parroted by non EV owners sharing opinions instead of experiences.

I lived in South America for a number of years. The state of domestic wiring was quite frankly staggering. You didn't dare licking your fingers after eating bbq chicken just in case you touched a metal surface.
The problem with the study on vehicle fires is that the study itself says it had no stats on EV fires with regard to arson. It also stated on its main graph that the biggest cause of ice fires was arson, either after theft....or for insurance money.
And the age of the car matters, not just the numbers on the road. Fires/days since manufacture should be relevant. EVs are burning at like 5 days old and zero miles on the clock. I imagine lots of non-arson ICE fires (Tales of ICE and Fires?) are from corrosion or 3rd party mods or perished tubes leaking etc
But the difference in fires mate. As soon as the fire department arrives the petrol car is extinguished within a minute or 2. The EV will burn forever. With you in it if you're unlucky.

But what most people on the EV side fail to mention is that the report takes all causes of fire, accidents, house fires, garage fires, car parking fires and regardless of what caused the fire...even if it was a external cause and wasn't started by the car itself.....it is classed as a ice fire, the report was based on insurance claims for fire damage.....not cause. So, it is not really a correct metric to gauge fires between all vehicle types. Take the Luton fire....all those will be in the latest report even though one car started it. Can you see the game they play?
100,000 car fires in the UK ????? I was a mechanic for 40+ years and didn't have one come in that had burned, I saw a car on the motorway many years back starting to burn and put it out with a small car size extinguisher, I know cars burn but 100k a year sounds wrong to me.
It does sound rather high - though of course that will include cars in garages if the house went on fire etc. In the USA the figure I have seen reported was about 175000, IIRC.
yeah they talk about ICE car fires not knowing that there are millions of very old cars still on the roads with faulty repairs, aftermarket gadgets, tunning.... if youve seen those videos on internet about the state of vehicles at mechanic shops youll not believe youe eyes.

Well, at least they have experience of owning an EV - as opposed to many people who have never even been in one who seem to know all there is to know about them, and it is all negative.
I've seen loads, pretty much all on motorways though. Common cause is morons throwing lit dog ends out the window that by bad luck goes in the air intake where the filter catches fire or just generally under the bonnet.
All these people that have seen LOADS of car fires 😂 I know that kind. Every fckn trip they do they see some major accident or car fire or whatever. Probably in their dreams. While I literally live on the road. 100k miles a year. And it's at least a decade ago since I saw any serious accident. Maybe seen 2 car fires in 30 years. These people are full of it. 😄
I've seen a fair few car and HGV fires in my driving career, it certainly does happen e.g. there was a spate of Vauxhall Zafiras self immolating a number of years back, and there were multiple recalls of many thousands of cars. The point is that an ICE car fire is far more likely to start whilst the car is being driven so you become very quickly aware and have time to stop and bail out, rather than catching fire whilst it's left unattended and potentially burning your house down.

Mode of failure! Please... when will people recognise this! A ice car fire is a minor problem in most cases whereas an EV fire is extremely hard to put out, self sustaining and hot enough to burn through steel and concrete! The mode of failure (in any type of transport or system) is critically important!
Here in Australia it’s a known fact that many ice car fires are stolen cars that are torched! Down here in Tasmania we have stolen cars torched every other day! Burnt patches and melted bitumen are a common occurrence.

A American fire chief summed up the difference between different vehicle types. ICE…generally low consequence event. EV…medium to high consequence event. Risks to firefighters…EV off gassing and explosion with elevated risk from toxic chemicals.
I saw a report from LA recently where the fire chief said they’d reached their 200th house fire so far this year caused by lithium batteries in power tools and e scooters.
I live in York and I still haven’t seen one of the fabled electric bin lorries. Yesterday was our fortnightly bin day and it was an ordinary diesel lorry. I think our electric bin lorries are actually unicorns which can only be seen by the terminally bewildered. John.

I think they assume that arson happens just as often with petrol car as with EVs deleting the significance in many ways. Specially when you want to know how many EV fires compared to petrol cars fires. In that case arson has no effect on the outcome if it happens just as often with both types of vehicles.
Problem with EV fires is they're much worse than standard car fires, any fire that causes the lithium battery to ignite, which is shockingly not that difficult, is going to be classed as a battery fire because it suddenly goes from "just spray a bit of water on it" to "this thing needs to be submerged in water for up to a month".
I have two work colleagues get EVs as work vehicles (I was offered one but knocked it back when I saw the range). I have listened to their tales on recharging and it’s certainly not convinced me to get one.

Our newly introduced electric bin lorry has disappeared after the local council have recently introduced a new stackable system. Special fitted out diesel Isuzu's have appeared instead.
In a village I grew up in two days ago, an electric rickshaw bike caught fire. Youngsters are apparently to blame. No evidence. Only camera footage is of a few teenagers walking in area. One is seen putting his litter in a bin shock horror. Honestly. There is now a go fund to raise £10,000 to get another.
40 years driving many as an hgv driver only saw one car fire on the road fairly new Mercedes 20 years ago. These ev seem to go up charging rather than on the road 😮
@@boogboog8097 I blame crap electrical work, bad EVSEs, and user error. Plenty of failure points between the three of those. Then again gas automobiles were quite the menace when they first hit the roads.
Just a suggestion about the maths percentages - How many petrol + diesel cars are there? The number of those that catch fire (don't know the figures) as a percentage of the number of petrol + diesel cars around. mmm The number or EV fires as a percentage of the number of EV's around. Bet the percentages are a little different perhaps!!!! Anyone do the maths there?
There have recently been several EV fires in South Korea. Loads go up in China too. There is a video online of an EV bicycle battery going up in a lift, looked horrific.

ever seen melted asphalt ? I have and it was nowhere in the news, what a surprise, on the left lane of a nearby highway there's a car sized depression all smooth with no visible cracks or grit anymore...almost like a volcano erupted on a specific spot and melted reality
here in Spain somebody down the road let their family here on holiday connect the tesla directly to their house (which was all working fine). It blew all the electrics of the house
I had a fire in my mk5 Escort when the battery lead shorted out against the bonnet, so I guess you could call that a lead-acid battery fire. Handy thing about such fires though, is they're easily put out with a fire extinguisher, which I happened to have. And I was able to replace the burnt wire with a jumper lead to get me home. No swimming pool required, and the only lasting issue was that nasty white powder would come out of the vents whenever I used the heater for the next few months!
Regarding the “data” about vehicle fires Ev vs ice cars catching fire; there are several times the amount of ice cars out there so it stands to reason that there would be several more ice car fires than ev fires. Agreed the cost of dealing with ev fires is higher.
As someone who had my petrol car go up in flames at traffic lights while I was driving it, all I can say is check your stats. Ice cars burn far more often than EVs.
The owner obviously thought he was clever trying to hook up to a ultra high speed electricity charger that charges in five seconds then realised it blows their car up quickly.

Near on every vehicle stolen in Australia are set on fire by the thief to destroy any evidence on the vehicle that could identify them. This would affect the stats as we have a lot of cars stolen. I assume it’s the same in the UK.

I have never seen a car on fire, but in Sweden if they (edit: M.o.t) notice your car are leaking oil or petrol, you are not allowed to drive the car on the road if you do not fix it within a month. I've had a coworkers car got destroyed in a arson, where the person put his car on fire to make his car parked next to it get destroyed, to get insurance money.
@@matthewgodwin3050 Ok, I have been driving since 2006, never seen an EV car on fire, but have seen over 10 ICE cars on fire. Doesn't matter though because it's not the cars fault for the fire, it's the idiot who decided to connect it to a power line. Just more anti-ev stuff from people who refuse to accept change, I like my BMW 435D and will not be changing it anytime soon, but when I do it will be either a Mustang 5.0 or an EV, will decide when the time comes.
To be an Ev lover you need to have a reduced level of brightness. They can not see the big picture. Just tomorrow and the day after and then we'll see. The government will probably fix it. They know best 😂
I have been driving for well over 50 years and I have very rarely seen any burnt out cars along the road. The only ones I have seen were as a result of arson after theft so this was probably what he was seeing - not some natural combustion as in EVs. Billions of ICE and a few million EVs work it out.
We all know that EVs are less likely than ICE to catch fire, however the issue is EV fires are impossible to extinguish and usually cause more damage to their surroundings.
What people need to realise is electric cars make up a small percentage of cars on the road but catch fire more frequently. In the UK there are over 30m petrol and diesel vehicles and 1.1m electric vehicles
That's why the stats usually account for that discrepancy by quoting fires per 100,000 vehicles. It's a very common way to report many stats for many topics.

The guy who hotwired a pylon Probably thought it was like a recharging point in a garage or something, forgetting that (if it's anything like the UK) the approx 400,000 volts coming off the pylon would have charged the car in about 2 seconds 😂.
Lithium is a highly reactive metal like magnesium, sodium, calcium and phosphorus. Once ignited it is almost impossible to control or extinguish. Water promotes the combustion.
When a petrol or diesel car is found burnt out at the roadside, the chances are is that it was a stolen car abandoned after being set on fire by the thieves
