Gigafactory Texas on 14 December 2020! This is where the Cyber Truck and Model Y will be built!
It was an extremely cold day out at Giga Texas as we had a cold front come through yesterday evening and early this morning, with winds over 30 mph at some points. Fortunately, the winds died down by the time I arrived, but wind chills were in the 20's, making flying a bit "challenging" but I was successful!
In today's video, we discuss some additional land purchases Tesla has completed to add more land (now about 2,530 acres) to the Giga Texas overall property. In addition, they arrayed the sample material selection right in front of where I launch the drones, so I got some particularly good looks and footage of these panels and materials. This is kind of like going to Home Depot to select materials for a (very large) kitchen remodel, so that was interesting to see.
Here are the key highlights from today:
- There was a very prominent material selection display arrayed out on the northwest part of the foundation as if it was prepared for Tesla employees to make final selection for the exterior parts of the structure. This would include type of material and color selections as well as textures
- The new (small) steel structure had all of the main cross braces installed for the three segments (so far) but they had not yet installed the floor beams. Active stacking and pre-positioning of more steel columns and materials was going on around the structure this morning, so preparations for more work is underway
- GeoPier work on the southwest of the foundation continued and is very near the southern external wall area of the foundation
- In the big concrete structure south of the isolation foundations, more concrete cross beams were being installed and prep work on a column to allow for the installation of another concrete roof beam and then double-T roof segments
- The isolation foundation now has two poured concrete "tops" and fill dirt is nearly complete on the west, north and central-west areas of what was once the "Big Pit". Additional scaffolding work was underway in the central foundation area, suggesting the top section will be constructed in this area soon. More large concrete beam footings were under construction on the east side of this area
- The "Zippered Pit" is getting some substantial column footings that look remarkably similar to the concrete footings being constructed in and around the isolation pit area. This suggests that concrete columns will be used here as well and lends credibility to the idea that a large bridge crane will be installed in this area in the future
- The large steel structure has now grown to over 600 feet long with new sections on the south and the north. On the north, they are just two more sections from reaching the north exterior wall base!
- On the northeastern section of the foundation, right next to the steel structure, more very large footings are being excavated and filled with rebar and mud base. These are different in size and placement to those used for the steel structure, and most of the rest of the footings across the rest of the foundation. This suggests something different is being constructed here but what remains a mystery
- There are three new contractor trailers on the ease "switchyard" area today ... not sure if this signals the start of construction in this area, the temporary staging area for the trailers to be moved farther east, or if this is a new area for construction companies to set up shop. Will need to monitor this in the coming days

The footings on the east side that don't line up with the bldg. I think that's where another two parallel rows of robotic arms will be anchored. We had samples of GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) for the exterior of our new bldg. Then the subcontractor and/or our management let the exterior panels get delayed. So they were drywalling the interior while the exterior walls were not yet in place and we had heavy rains during that time. Place was ankle deep in water. Big mess. Came back later to haunt us with moldy walls. 🤮🤮🤮 Thanks so much, Joe.

Thanks Joe. The site gets busier by the day. The goings on in the big pit continue to confuzzle me. 10:32. Bottom left of screen between the 2 excavators a worker is marking out a footing location with a flouro spray marker. Must have watched nearly 200 videos of this site, and that's the first time I have seen someone marking out an excavation. 11:11. Bottom left. Worker making fine adjustments to hold down bolts. 12:07. Offline footings. They appear to be larger in area, and the small concrete pads already poured in the bottom of the pits seem to be only 4"/100mm thick. You can see the forms for these small pads in the pit to right of screen. So not stepped footings like elsewhere on site. 4 workers in the pit are trimming the tops off the geopiers. 14:20. Paint colours. No Tesla red! I made an entirely inappropriate sexist joke about how the selected colour will turn out to be the wrong colour, but then had second thoughts, and deleted it. 🤭 17:03. Left of screen. The additional pads excavated in the last few days have hold down bolts, so more columns. Better view in Jeffs Day 145 at 4:02.

First thing in a switchyard should be a copper wire grid buried to form a ground plane and allow all the equipment to be connected to it. Search for ground grid and substation grounding and you may find some useful images. I have not seen any such thing at the Giga Texas location yet.

Along the East side of the current steel structure, you should notice those footings all have double beam landing pads. This, combined with the different adjacent grid pattern means effectively a separate sub building. The different grid pattern implies a different column spacing requirement for the machinery to be installed in this area. i.e. The machinery column spacing requirement is not an even multiple of 35' like the South or zipper pit areas.. At a guess, it looks more like a 50' spaced grid. Note the newly delivered cross beams still on the flat bed trailers appear to match the new grid spacing. Note on the South wall of the new steel structure has double landing pad footings. This will be another internal separation wall. If you look at Giga Berlin, it looks like the overall building has about 9 sub buildings and at least 3 different roofing systems. So far, I make it at least 7 different sub buildings here at Giga Texas. Joe, if you review your previous raw footage, it might be interesting to mark down where all the multi landing pad footings are. ;)

Looking at the staged materials, there are some “full height” columns and roof trusses that are 75% longer than the ones already installed. My guess is that the area to the east of the large steel structure will be general assembly (wide open spaces for robots). Working from the southeast corner of the building, you have stamping (big pit), casting (zipper pit), then general assembly. Make a U-turn in the production line, then you have paint shop (upper floor of steel structure), moving to the south you’ll install doors (on an unbuilt second floor), then probably make another U-turn to the north on ground floor for interior, glass, etc. Final inspection would probably be located on ground floor under paint shop. Raw materials enter at south end, come out as complete vehicles at north end.
@JoeTegtmeyer
@JoeTegtmeyer 3 года назад
Thanks Douglas ... that is some great thought you've put to this and you may be right. Earlier I did something similar based on Shanghai, but I had the finished cars exiting to the east under the powerlines. If it goes your way, then they will be coming out either to the south or possibly through the factory to the west. Interesting.

Here’s another reason why they might have chosen to fill in the central road between buildings... They are using this area for material staging! The zipper pit foundations look like they will have 8 big anchor bolts in each foundation. This is the same as the poured foundations lined up further to the north. The zipper bolt pattern looks bigger because of the pier riser off the lower concrete. The rectangular pier box at the south end of the zipper is actually going to be set up for 2 columns while the rest at this point will be set up for one. These are not the same as the concrete column ground attachments. I did notice that there will be double concrete columns just on the south side of the big pit. The top of those piers have 2 sets of attachment points. The one being constructed on the east side has a big enough pier for 2 attachments.
@devinhunter209
@devinhunter209 3 года назад
I believe the column spacing changed to allow a larger equipment/work/delivery area. e.g. If the avg column width is 45’ maybe this section benefits from a 60’ “runway”. This might require Increasing the size/weight of the structural roof steel in this area but allowing wider spans.

Could be but not yet sure. You can also see a double column mount on each column base along the east side of the steel structure suggesting both steel beams here and a “building-in-a-building approach where two types of structures come together under the same roof structure. Hey Joe. Have you noticed the additional bolts/rebar protruding from the footer/foundations? If you look at the large steel structure at the 12:06 (approx). Also if you look at the new small steel structure at the 16:35 mark, you will see the footers on the North side (right) do not have the extra bolts/rebar points but on the South side (left) they do have them. Additionally, if you look at the 17:16 mark the footers/foundations in the bottom right area have some with 4 and some with 8 bolts/rebar install points. Look to the North at this same time point and all the footers have only 4 install points. I hope this makes sense. Great videos. Take care.
