I've wanted to do this video for quite some time now, but just got around to it. the carbon sleeved rotor on the Tesla Model S PLAID is an amazing piece of kit that does really impressive things and heralds a the dawn of a new type of motor that is hyper performant and lightweight.
In this video we take a small dive into the science behind it and what it all means. The reduction in weight will be what most people are thinking of, but there is a lot that is going on and there are a lot of improvements that Tesla introduces by shifting to this design.

I'm not saying it's magic - but it's magic! :)

Very well done. I am ready for my new job as a Tesla motor engineer. Seriously, it was clear and concise. Easy to understand.

Thank you. That was the idea, to keep it understandable. It might be fun to fully geek out on it is a specialised video too 😁

@@StevenPeeters Hell yeah that would be fun. Maybe even some Femm simulation to show how V config helps motor efficency.

I actually suggested the CF wrap of the rotor years back, several of my ideas have been implemented so I'm thinking Tesla/Elon pays attention to various forums. I also suggested having hydrogen in the motor to have low aero resistance at extreme RPMs but you have to watch for hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen is also a good heat conductor apparently. Maybe they've also done that but maybe the hydrogen is too hard to keep in. Or you need to replenish it. I also suggested laying a rocket on its side to bleed energy when coming down. Which wildly they did :) The knightrider theme was me too. Some could be independent ideas but the timing and numbers are suggestive. It's flattering but would be nice to be credited officially.

I’m sure Elon and the team are listening to all ideas that have a solid foundation in physics. Now, physics is universal so they could logically come up with yhe same ideas. I’ve had made some remarks in the past as well and then they got implemented. Was it really my suggestion? We’ll never know, but I fo know that several Tesla engineers and people higher up in the food chain are a member of my channel. So I’d like to think that every now and then I’m making a small contribution to the development of the product

The idea of carbon wrapping things for extra strength is not new, the hard part is coming up with a machine that can do a lot of it cheaply.

You can get magnets rated for 150 Deg C! Most motor companies using magnets are getting 120 deg C magnets for low performance stuff and high performance stuff is 150 deg C +

If the radius is 15 cm you need to enter 75 mm as radius for the correct calculation :)

Will they be able to improve it for roadster so that it can handle more power?
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters 3 года назад
Elon said at the unveil that it might spin faster, so that is needed for too speed. As for power, I would love to see a 4-motor setup, just like the Rimac Nevera. That would easily make over 1700HP then, with full torque steering. Plus, the car will weigh less than this Model S
@eubikedude
@eubikedude 3 года назад
@@StevenPeeters IMO, the drivetrain is the same as what would have been in Plaid+ (so "1100+ HP capable) but the limiting factor is the batteries, Roadster will almost certainly have 4680 and as you say, maybe even 4 motors. :) It'll be fun in a few years if the whole range ends up with CSMs (for efficiency/weight reduction as much as performance) and 4680. I can't wait to see the next 2 to 3 years of development. Awesome stuff.

@@StevenPeeters Steven your video is fantastic. And I also love your roadster t-shirt! I am rooting for the roadster to outperform Nevera as well, and if it takes 4 motors.....so be it!

@bart Do you mean it the other way around? The nevera has 2 gears in the rear like the c_one before and the etron gt/taycan. I remember Mate Rimac said it in a interview because of the announced specs from roadster.

Is this motor patented?
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters 3 года назад
Even though Elon said it was the first time this motor is used, carbon fiber overwrap rotors have existed for some time. They have just not yet been used in EVs at scale. I don't know if it's patented or not, but I don't think so, as Elon literally mentioned "we have to keep some secrets". If it were patented, the whole design would be out there, in great detail.
