I've had my Tesla Model Y for just over 2 weeks and this is my experience of trying 3 different charging methods including their relative costs and ease of use. I also found out that the battery range you get is no where close to the EPA rating of 316 miles.

I like your simple and informative style, great stuff. You might want to add to your charging the cheap rate options for people, I get 5p unit at night for 4 hours which compares to 15p normal rate. In those 4 hours I can add about 120 miles of range from a type 2 charger - resulting in about 1p/mile to drive which is 10 times less than a good European car that gave me 50-60 miles/UK-gallon. I also use a "green" supplier that only buys zero-carbon electricity on the open market, this has forced the UK market to go heavily into green generation for purely economic reasons.

I got my model Y yesterday, I enjoyed the video... The 120 volt charging is very slow. Living in Nevada, the battery drain from cooling the cabin during non use is a big deal. I noticed today the car was constantly cooling /running while just parked. This is a learning experience..... Love the car. Having a 240 volt inlet installed on Tuesday...

The NEMA 14-50 outlet is the very same outlet found at RV parks everywhere. The supercharger network is pretty extensive now, but if you want to hit some spots of the beaten path, it’s good to have that adapter. RV parks are everywhere - and especially in those out in the boonies spots away from major highways.

My order date, delivery date, and delivery experience were all very similar to yours. I got my Y AWD Long Range about two weeks ago and I really like the car! I think some Y orders might have been cancelled due to the pandemic and recession, so my delivery was earlier than I expected. I am not tech savvy and have been driving an ICE car for 45 years, so I was a little bit nervous about buying a Tesla. I have not had any problems adapting. The location of the screen and not having the display behind the steering wheel has been perfectly fine. I wish there were a few manual controls, but that is no big deal. There are two panel places on the outside that don’t line up perfectly, specifically where my white side panel meets the black rim near the tires. The Tesla delivery employee noted the problems and I have to schedule the adjustments. They might be able to do them at my house. Honestly, I never would have noticed them if it were not for all the videos and news articles about panel gaps in the past models. Tesla has been working to improve those types of issues. The storage in back is about the same as my Lexus RX 400H, except it is not quite as high near the top of the rear window. It is a crossover that scoops down, not a SUV, so that is to be expected. I did not get the $7,000 full self drive because it is not totally reliable yet although I risk a price increase if I want it in the future. By the time it is perfected, I figured I might be in the market for my next car. The Auto Pilot works great for me. I got the 19 inch wheels because I believe the 20 inch wheels will give you more of a road feel, which I don’t want, and the high performance tires will wear out faster. I know someone who regrets paying extra for the 20 inch wheels. So far, I am very happy with my Y!

Great video! If you are not using the car, it is still recommended to keep it plugged in all the time even if you only have 110V outlet. Plus you can set it so that even though its plugged in it will only pull power during a set time. For example using cheap nighttime electricity! ABC - Always be Charging.

I'm still on my original battery (nine years so far) in my Nissan Leaf. For it's whole life I've been charging it with the 240v system in my garage. I never leave the car charged to 100% for more than a few hours. 95% of it's life I've kept it charged between 50-80%. At the battery's degradation rate I figure my battery pack will last me 20 years easily. Even though I can charge it with CHAEDMO hi-volt system, I have never charged it that way. Charging at those levels are stressful for battery's anodes and hasten their cracking.

Downside to Wall charger is that is specific to Tesla cars. When you sell your house, a 14-50 that can charge virtually any EV, so it's an advantage. A Tesla wall charger is brand specific, at least today.

Good job. I think most people don't understand they don't drive more than 30 miles a day, which can be replenished overnight with a standard 120V outlet. Also, you can make an extension cord and some pigtails for most clothes dryer outlets for your road trip destination. When you look into window tinting, look up the newer ceramic films. you pay a bit more but much better performance without having to go too dark.

Grandpa Ron Future video suggestion. Please do a video showing your cost per mile for your charging options ( 1st 120 VAC Home 2nd 240 VAC Nema 14-50 Plug 3rd Tesla Public Supercharger Stations ) Show your cost per KW hour from utility company at best charging time. It would be interesting to see how it compares to other transportation options. It would be enlightening to compare to some of the gasoline only small hybrids that get around 50 MPG in real world city suburban driving cycles. I have a friend that sees tank mileage values from 46 to 58 MPG over the course of a year in Dallas TX City suburban driving cycle. High temp in summer demands heavy AC use while fall, winter, spring are more moderate. I would also comment that his driving style is economical and his goal is to achieve higher FE results. If their Hybrid averages 50 MPG over the course of a year and 87 R+M Regular Unleaded Gasoline is $2.50 USD per gallon; then their fuel cost per mile is $0.05 per mile. Would like to see how the Model Y compares. Of course the disclaimers would be this is only energy cost input and that energy cost varies around the country. Additionally the other vehicle cost are not considered. Enjoy the Model Y. Will you no longer want to drive the Sprinter Class C due to the fuel cost per mile. Thanks for the great videos

120v - 240v you can safely charge to 100% , Superchargers to 80% id done in 15 minutes, but IF you charge to 90% it takes 30 - 40 minutes. IF you use a Destination Charger (240) you can also Charge to 100%.

You need to call your utility company and ask if they have an EV rate. If they do they don’t normally start until midnight. I recommend you start charging at 1205 AM and she will be fully charged when you come out in the morning. An ev rate is generally around 3 to 4 cents a kilowatt hour versus 22 cents or higher per kilowatt hour. If you go away on vacation leave the car plugged in and as the electronics use up the battery charge the car will automatically charge the car without overcharging it. A buddy of mine had to work overseas for 6 months and asked me to keep his car charged so once a week I’d stop in to check the car. I had reduced the charge rate to 15 amps and it had no problem maintaining the battery at all. The battery was set at 90 percent. Enjoy

On the charging issue, our electrician wants to charge us $2,500 to install a Tesla Wall Charger to a new designated 240 circuit in the garage. He is not supposed to just extend the dryer circuit which is not too far away. The electrical panels are on the complete opposite side of the house in the basement and he has to follow an I beam to thread it through all the way to the garage. The Tesla Wall Charger is $500, plus we will need to pay someone to do some drywall repair and paint from the holes the electrician is going to make to run the wire. I thought it would be about $1,000 total. Instead it will be about $3,500 if we go ahead with the Wall Charger purchase. ☹️

I learned how to install the breakers, wiring size, conduit, to have dedicated EV circuit to the charger, materials and tools (bender, wire stripper, #8 awg wire, conduits, junction box, nuts and nails) came up to $400 for 80 ft run, plus $500 charger. After taxes, I did my own installation for little over $1000.

Agreed. Teslas are the first car I’ve heard of with this feature. Having all electric cooling available, it makes sense to me to use it. At my electric rate, each “mile lost” costs about $0.02, so I think it’s worth a few pennies a day to keep the cabin below 100F. Of course, it makes getting in the car much more pleasant, too!

How much does it cost to install 240v Nema connection? Do I have to contact my electricity provider to get it installed?
@markplott4820
@markplott4820 4 года назад
a Couple Hundred $$$, but your Utility may have a Rebate Program. you can get a NEW charge port and a NEW Electrical box installed by an Electrition , but your Utility will install the Meter. IF you already have a 240v high amp circuit (Electric Oven, Elec Dryer) than all you need is the Extinsion.

Just wondering how your home electricity bill has gone up as a result. Also when you use public chargers do you swipe a credit card or is it billed directly to your account? Just wondering electrical cost versus gas costs. Keep up the good work. I test drove a model 3 for the first time the other day then a friend suggested the Model Y. I'm holding out but very eager.
