James Armstrong was tasked with finding out if feature-finding technology could beat analog, as it were. The Deeper Chirp+ 2 vs. the humble 3oz distance lead. It made for a great film, with James revealing plenty of tips and edges when it comes to reading a lakebed, whether that’s off a screen from your Deeper or through your fingertips.

I use both ! I Map the lake with the deeper ! Then when I find a spot i cast a weight out and feel it down and drag it to see if it is a spot ! Also the deeper is great in the middle off winter to find at what depth in water the fish are holding up for the use off zigs.

Both! Deeper will reveal more in one cast than you will get with a lead. Once you find a spot or a feature interrogate it with a lead if you really must but the Deeper on Day Colour Palette can help you understand the firmness of the lakebed quite easily! 👍🏻

I'm currently on a very weedy and rock hard lake. It's a new venue and using deeper and mapping out every swim. Fine tune / confirm my findings with lead and marker float. Fantastic invention and quick results with visual video playback

This is really useful for someone whose been considering a deeper for a little while now. I know you touched on it towards the end but I’d love to understand the process that comes after the deeper more - how do you move to clipping up your fishing rods? Do you still need to lead around to find the spot? Clipping up at the right distance and making allowances for the depth etc. I use a lead and marker atm, but can defo see the advantages. Thanks
@tomwinterfishing9065
@tomwinterfishing9065 Год назад
You still need to lead around a bit to double check, because of the arc of the lead and angle of the rod. Generally, if you find a spot with the deeper, then sweep the rod up to your 'feeling down' angle, with the bail arm open, you'll be in the ballpark and can fine tune from there.

I've been using Deeper Pro+ for more than 4 years, I reckon... Well worth it, provided you use the instrument properly. First up, don't use it as a fishfinder. Second, learn to read sonar (I have been shocked to meet people on the banks spouting off about how useless their Deepers are... but they can't even feel a bloody lead down properly!) Third, confirm what your deeper's telling you with a quick cast with a lead ... I do not use a Deeper when there are other anglers near me, out of respect for them, even if they've been fishing like twats. I also don't use it when I even vaguely suspect its going to spook fish into not feeding, or fleeing the area... I also mostly only use it at relatively short distances, 80 yards max, but more often between 40 to 60 yards, and on bigger waters.

I use both, depending on the situation. A small lead is better in the shallows, I have the chirp2+ and it cant handle 2-3ft of weed in 3-4ft of water. in deep pits the deeper is far quicker at giving an accurate depth reading and gives me a much better idea of what is out in front of me. I wont use the deeper on a busy lake, or if i know are lots of pike present.. seems like its a magnet for big pike!

I’ve used a deeper since they first hit the UK, they are good for small lakes and short range. Longer distances 70 yard plus then they are a pain! Connection cuts out, drag on line etc it’s more hassle than a lead. Essentially great for small venues, rubbish for big venues.

I never use a lead buddy … if I was to map my swims defo would buy a deeper .. it’s Awesome what they show you .. as I’ve no experience with a lead I would not even bother .. deeper is the most accurate way of mapping … might be on my Christmas list now joe .. cheers for that … cheers Chris & Sam

It depends on the situation if it's the same spot I've fished before I just need to check to see if it's still clear I'll just use the lead if it's weedy then I put the deeper on because it's easier and there's less disturbance

So when you find a spot with the deeper what rule of thumb do you use to clip the lead at to get on that spot that you have found ?
@DAZZYD24
@DAZZYD24 Год назад
You have different angle settings. You can go all the way down to 7°. Once I find something I like I normally clip up, flip over to a lead for confirmation and it is normally pretty accurate.
@dericlarke4324
@dericlarke4324 Год назад
@@DAZZYD24 surely you’ll be casting short if you do so ? As you haven’t added the swingback of the lead when casting out ? I suppose your way would work if it was like 4ft of water
@DAZZYD24
@DAZZYD24 Год назад
@@dericlarke4324 I was fishing in 20 plus feet of water at Tar farm last week and it was pretty accurate. You will have to cast the lead a couple of times but I found a decent spot right off some weed within minutes rather than casting a lead around multiple times.

I always seen to find a lovely little clean spot first cast with a lead. Clip up, then never find it again and end up fishing on nasty, black rotting weed. I'm a bit ashamed to use my deeper, and when I do, I get rubbish signal. I never catch anything, so it doesn't matter anyway!

Too much worrying about “spots” these days, Fish where the fish are,Watch people every week turn up see a show repeatedly cast a lead to try and see whats underneath,Carp are now at the other end of the lake….
@HaveAFishYaDickhead
@HaveAFishYaDickhead Год назад
It will show alot more info if you zoom out on the scan. You'll notice a second line that imitates the lakebed. If that 2nd line is quite dark in colour it will be showing more silty areas, when the 2nd line goes a bright yellow colour your on a proper hard spot. you might even see a 3rd and 4th line underneath when the spots proper hard.

But can ya see if there are any fish in the "swim" using just the lead? Silly me to ask, but why do you folk call a body of water a swim when you are fishing not swimming? lol Looked like a lake to me, Here in the states I've NEVER heard of anyone feeling out a fishing place by dragging a sinker across it. Totally strange practice to us. Love you Brits, Irish and Scots for sure! My daughter married a Daugherty. Irish a few generations immigrated.

It's funny how the marker float has fallen out of favour. If you go back 10/15 years every man and his dog used them. Now nobody does. Yes you get much more disturbance, but a marker float will tell you pretty much the same as a deeper, just might take a tad longer!

Why you using a 4.5 oz lead , that’s not optimal at feature finding ,great at spooking the fuck out of the lake #Sealeads use a 3 for feature finding 4 will plug into a clean bottom anyway ffs 😂
