If you want to run a large tire on your 4x4, it really helps to have a very large wheelwell. The 2007 to 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK platform has one the biggest wheelwells of any SUV ever produced. This allows you to squeeze on a significantly larger tire without a lot of work. To test out one of the most common questions we receive, we tossed on a set of 35x12.50R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on our 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport.
*** Note, We misspoke about the wheel backspacing. They have 4.75, not 4.50 as stated.

Speaking from experience with a 2015 2 Door and 35x12.50, off-road tilt works great. You’re going to hate anything other than bouncing around town. Long treks on the turnpike etc, you definitely want to accommodate different gears.

I threw on 33” on a 2017 jk and the front wheel rubbed at full tilt. Had to install 1 1/2” spacers on all four, problem solved and it brought it out just beyond the fender edge. Mint! Appreciate the video though

I was planing on using 35" tires with a 1.75" spacer lift on my 2017 JK Unlimited Rubicon. I'm changing out all my fenders as well. I have heard that Rubicons have a 1" factory lift over the Sport and Safari. Is that true? If so, that would give me 2.75" lift total. If not, is 1.75" enough and still be able to use my sway bar release?
@Ali_Mansour_Editor
@Ali_Mansour_Editor 4 года назад
There are different spring rates between the Rubicon and other models in the JK lineup, but I would not bank on that giving you extra lift. If you are swapping out your fenders to something more similar to a flat-style fender, you will probably be fine out back. However, you still may rub up front with the sway bar disconnected. A lot of this will depend if you extend the bump stop and what type of backspacing your wheels have.

@@jorgevega4541 We haven't tested that setup, so we don't want to steer you wrong. You would likely be better of sticking with something like a 33x12.50R17 Nitto Trail Grappler with your setup. You need highline flares that come on the Rubicon to clear a 35 with no lift. Even then, to reduce rub with the stock wheel, a 35x11.50R17 is recommended.

Forgive me because I'm a bit dumb when it comes to anything gear/engine related. Do you have to regear? Or is it okay to just kiss your gas mileage goodbye and stay on pavement? Sounds like that calibration is really important for accurate speedometer though
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine 2 года назад
Installing numerically higher differential gears when moving up tire sizes is the right move for sure. However, it’s not cheap. Depending on what gear ratio your Jeep came with from the factory and the size tire you’re going with will play a big role here. Also, where you drive your Jeep makes a difference as well. This Jeep lives in the coastal plains and rarely sees speeds over 55 mph. While differential gears would definitely improve the performance and help with the fuel economy, it’s not as critical. If you’re getting on the highway frequently, that’s a completely different story. And the calibration model is very important for shift points and making your speedometer read correctly.

So far all videos talk about size fitting, almost none talk about stress on axles shafts. Specially if we refer a stock jeep as the sport (or rubicon?) I still run 33s even with a lift
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine 2 года назад
That's a great point. This particular JK has the Dana 30 front and Dana 44 rear. Both of those axles are more than capable of running the 35's without issue. If it was a Rubicon, I would have no worries running a 37.

Your 35”s would have rubbed the splash guard, but what about 34”s? Will they fit stock without rubbing, or will it require a leveling kit or lift? I’m looking at BFG KO2 285 75R17, which are 33.8” tires. I’m using stock wheels without spacers.
@Ali_Mansour_Editor
@Ali_Mansour_Editor 4 года назад
The would likely still rub the splash guard at full lock. It's pretty easy to trim if you want to keep it on there. A small budget boost would help prevent contact for sure. The bigger issue is that you'll still rub on the fenders pretty heavily off-road with the sway bar disconnected.

It really depends on the wheel mostly. In my experience, you’ll need wheel spacers at the very least if you were going to keep stock wheels. I ran Rubicon JK wheels in the past with a 35 and a 37. All I needed was a set of standard wheel spacers to make it work.
