I have worked up some whitetail loads with 139, 150 & 162 bullets in 7mm Rem Mag with IMR4451 & H4350. My elk loads in 7 are with Retumbo & 162 ELDX. I am quite pleased with 4451 results using 162 ELDX on paper & in the field. Very good SDs & groups. Velocities are respectable but not too high. Using less powder than H1000 & Retumbo thus helping reduce recoil a bit.

Yes Gavin, get a Mark V, you won't regret it. I have only used 4451 and 4166. Both provided best accuracy and best velocity in both 270 Win and 7mm-08 Rem. Wish I could still find them on retail shelves.

Hello Gavin! Awesome video once again. No matter what you decide to go with I’ll watch it and love it. Lol. I’m currently running 4166 in my 6 Dasher and getting good results. It’s a Dasher so it’s not too hard. It does gain a lot of speed when the temp rises compared to Varget. I run it slower (2800) to keep from getting heavy bolt lift at higher temps. For competition shooting you need to know how to run the Kestrel for temp. sensitive powder to stay on target. Especially when the morning temps are 55 and the last 4 or 5 stages are 80 plus degrees. Keep on keepin on 💩

I use IMR8133 in my 25-06Rem & 300WinMag with heavy for the caliber bullets. I've started experimenting with loads that the manual or GRT says are 'compressed' or really close to compressed. I'm using a 20" powder drop tube to get a more consistent compression of powder thru the powder column. It's dropped a couple loads with SD in the teens down to single digits. YMMV.

I like that you break down things to a science. I get a lot of insight from your channel. I have a question however. I seen you had ramshot Magnum on the table. Do you have experience with aliant magpro? I bought 8 lbs hoping it will work well for my 243. Great velocity, crap SD, builds pressure fast, and my rifle turned into a 2" gun. Normally it shoots 1/2" with 105s and below. I tried in my 7mag, and played around with some light charges in my 30-06. Both are normally 1/2-3/4" but with magpro they shot 1.5-2". Any advice?

Very informative issue. There are some points I think you should cover perhaps not in the powder reviews but maybe if and when you get that MK V Weatherby in 257 Wby. Mag. First issue is barrel length and magnum cartridges. Many modern rifles have 20- or 22-inch barrels and this ratio to powder efficiency. The other issue is leade and/or free bore with the added issue of throat erosion creating its own version of free bore. Curious minds want to know.

I don't think you will have much luch with the 300 WSM and this one, 7mm or 6.5MM maybe. Reason being is bulk density, this is a LONG stick powder and doesn't fill a case the same as something like Hunter or Magnum would.

2 questions... Weatherby mk v? Yes... Enduron powders? Haven't tried them yet. Sounds like that one would also be good for 300wm and 338lm though... Vihtavouri does a great job at quantifying with their burn rate chart. I just wish they'd update it with the newer powders and maybe make the chart bigger to fit those extra powders in. use something a little bigger for animals at long range. The .243's are great for prognhorn and whitetails at under 5 football fields, other than that I would pass. there are several reasons why this is a bad idea, the 2 main ones being 40% less projectile mass compared to the 7mm's and less BC. Velocity doesnt equal good /clean ethical kills at long range, High BC and mass does. We owe it to not make our animals the experiments for our minimalist attempts.

The rifles you have were made when everyone trying to make a $350 rifle. I have bought many of them for $499 and turn them into re-build projects. Just finished a 340 for my son. Your issue has nothing to do with the freebore. It has to do with fiberations and lose fitting stock. All of them have forearm contact built in. If you know how, pillar bed the recoil lug. Make sure to use studs and do not change the original height. Then see how it shoots. May have to sand out the fore end contact point in the stock. In addition make sure you screws are tight and do not touch the bolt. Some of the “mountain” rifles were built with too small of a diameter barrel to have been fluted. In order to shoot groups you have to shoot them 1X and let it cool. If not, they will walk. My next to oldest sone got 240 and it was a pain until I bedded the action floated the barrel. When I chamber Weatherby Rifles I ask customers to send three dummy rounds with the bullets they want to shoot seated out to the end of the magazine rail. This give you more powder capacity in the case. I took off the pencil thin barrel on my 300 and built one with a fluted barrel with a .695 muzzle diameter. 300 Shoots 180’s just south of 3,300 fps with 180 Partition out of a 24” barrel. I use Weatherby/Norma cases, Federal 215M, as much RL 26 it will handle and 180 Partition. Rifle is sub 1/4” MOA 5 shots. My 257’s like the following: 115 Nosler Ballastic Tip and 115 Nosler Partition. I use only Weatherby/Norma cases. Federal 215M. As much Reloader 26 that it will handle without excessive pressure. The loads chronograph at 3,476 with an SD of 6! The barrel is factory 24” # 1 contour. Only about 15 FPS slower than a 100 grain bullet. The wood stocks come with bedding compound and and aluminum reinforcement block in them. If the rifle hits your zero on the 1st dirty cold shot. You have a good hunting rifle. Rarely do ever have to anything more than once with the 257. Varmint gun/prairie dog gun will be a different story.

50 BMG is very accurate out of my BAT EX action. The only problem with BMG is that the industry will not supply quality brass. With Lapua brass it's a 1/3 moa rifle. I don't like all the PROFITEERING in the industry today.

Why does everyone think you need a “tough” bullet for elk?! The depth to vitals is only 1” deeper than a whitetail! The shoulder and rib bones are only 1/10” thicker than a whitetails! Its a much lighter constructed animal than everyone makes it out to be.

Angle of shots and sure size of body cavity. However, I do think you can get way too tough of a bullet. Need one that does hold up to the velocity of the cartridge you are shooting at impact distance. I prefer the Nosler Partition I have used the Speer Grand Slam, and Norma Soft Points all with success. I have seen more game wounded when shot with bullets that are too tough. They function more like FMJ’s. You made an excellent point given all the hype around certain famous bullets.

@@chevyon37s You are correct and back East hunting whitetails, you don't need a large caliber rifle. Most shots are less than 100 and a .223 is plenty. Out West, it depends and can be 600 + yards. Not that I would take a shot at an elk over 600 yards, but the magnums excel at the longer ranges, but there are other non-magnum calibers that do also. Now, that doesn't mean you can't get close to elk or take an elk with a caliber under a 30 caliber, that is not a magnum, because you damn well can.

Fragmentation projectiles ( non bonded) are a poor choice for elk, Nosler ABLR, partitions, Swift A frames are better suited for larger game.. extremely fast rounds tend to frag on impact at closer ranges (within 200 yard range)

I know that IMR8133 works in the 300 PRC, but thats aw hole lot of powder, compared to the same /better velocities with H1000. 77.5gr in Lapua Brass = 2950 and 3FPS standard deviations....The tried and true still has the goods.

I never had luck with h1000 in 300prc. Imr8133 worked immediately better for me. 225 eldms with 78.2 grains of imr8133 pushing 2758fps with an outstanding 2fps standard deviation with hornady brass of all things shocked me. I could never get my sd numbers under 20 with h1000 for whatever reason.

Firstly, whenever the question is, "should I buy x Weatherby?" The answer is always yes. But what I'd really like to see y'all do is take a 257 WBY Mark V, and do a custom rebarrel. Up the twist rate from 1in 10 (or 1 in 12 for an older one) to 1 in 7, and shorten the throat a bit (Weatherby chambers always have a long travel to the lands); And see what the cartridge can really do with something like a 135 grain Berger Hybrid! Lots of work, but imagine the payoff at the end!
@dustincowan5427
@dustincowan5427 2 года назад
There is a reason why there is a long distance to the lands. Weatherby knew that because of the long bullet jump it resulted in a "bigger" practical case volume when the bullet came out of the case but before the bullet hit the lands and create resistance force to allow for that much powder without blowing up actions.
@christopherbenfield7848
@christopherbenfield7848 2 года назад
The reasons why you should NEVER buy a Weatherby far outweight the reasons for, but heres a few. NO aftermarket support for better parts/upgrades. Brasss IS WAY WAY overpriced for the quality. Overbore = short barrel life and inconsistancy. lastly the affermentoned LONG jump to the lands and the way factory rifles are chambered...hard pass for me when there are SO many other equal/better cartridges and rifle actions.
@CCXRS7
@CCXRS7 2 года назад
@@dustincowan5427 Exactly, and let's not forget he was working with metallurgy and machining from the 1940's. The man was pushing the technological envelope of the period, which is why the throats are deeper than cartridges developed later. Doesn't mean you can't modernize the throat design for modern technology. As far as overbore goes, any high velocity Magnum is going to be overbore. If you don't complain about overbore on 6.5 PRC you don't get to on 257 WBY either.

I have a custom 257 Wby with a 25” barrel. It’s a 10 twist with a SAAMI Weatherby chamber. It shoots 115 VLD at 3600+ fps and prints .2” groups. There is not a thing in the world wrong with a longer freebore and could be easily argued you could never get that kind of performance without a long freebore. I’ve pushed it to over 3650 fps before any pressure signs started showing up.
@CCXRS7
@CCXRS7 2 года назад
@@mikedoyle7020 agreed, but you would need to up the twist rate for the new +130 grain bullets. Which imagine the long range potential of that 257 WBY with a 26 or 28" barrel and a 139 grain black jack
