Running 705s on my V-strom 650 now, had 804/805s previously. I think Kyle reflects accurately the capabilities and feel of both tire sets. The 804/805s hold better offroad with great acceleration traction though the back will slip a bit side to side when pushed hard. The 705s feel smooth on paved, a bit ass-happy and loose on gravel. The rear slide is easily controlled with throttle modulation, the 705 front keeps me wide awake off pavement, though it gets the job done. I don't know which I'll buy next, maybe a blend of 805 rear and keep running my 705 front. I have bought lots of tires from Chapparal and always had quick shipping, great service and the best prices I could find. Thank you for the honest reviews dirt naps and all, they really are helpful.

Ha! Ha! Todd! LOL, "705 front keeps me wide awake off pavement" for sure!!! Downhill descents where a little brake would be appreciated is not welcomed by the 705 front, that I found out multiple times. Ouch... I was SO TIRED of falling over (and am still sore) when rolling the Kenda Paver tires. I will never run those on a personal bike... unless it was the Last / ONLY tire available. Whew... that was a rough day in the dirt for sure. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oO8S3ACGzGU.html Thank you for watching and for your support. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team

I had a set of these on my 2013 Triumph Bonneville....but only got about 2k KM's out of them. Was quite happy with the 705's before they both went completely flat when a cop pulled a spike stripe out in front of my while going 100 KPH (within speed limit). Cop was trying to get an armed robber in a car coming opposite direction and got me as a bonus! Bike didn't lose stability as I glided to a halt...both were dead flat once I stepped off. Had a set of Bridgestone TrailWings put on as I was 8 hrs from home and the only place open at that time just had these. Didn't like them nearly as much...lots of road noise and vibration from the front end. Two seasons later, I went back to Shinko 705's and put 10,000 KM on them in 20 days doing Vancouver to Ottawa Canada and back. Was moto-camping on the Bonneville and did a reasonable bit of dirt road riding to/from camp sites most days. Very happy with the Shinko 705's again, and they did great at highway speeds hours on end and even several days of heavy rain on the highways. Never felt them slipping. Not being a skilled off-road rider, I'd guess the extra advantage from full knobbies is when in wet dirt/mud....better tread clearance than the Shinko 705 pattern would allow. Final point I didn't here you bring up the 705's are cheap as chips...I can put a set on my Bonneville for under $230 CDN...about 1/3 the price of the Bridgestome Trailwings and other brands.

Hello Chris, Should you advice these tires for a bmw 310 gs (169 kg or373 lbs)? Are you content with the performance on road? Mostly I am riding on road ( 50 miles every day), but for fun I go off-road. I have now 85/15 road/off-road Metzeler Tourance on the bike. Mud and deep sand are a problem. I rode 13.000 miles with my set now and I want to replace them. Sorry for my poor English. Greetings from the Netherlands, Frank

I'm on my 2nd set of 705 tires and I absolutely love them on my DR65. Talking with a GS1200 group traveling from Washington to Corado with half the trip being offroad, they really made me want to try the tire and I'm glad I did. I do Moab, forest riding, Arizona and Utah high speed desert running, these have been my favorite tires to run out of 5 different sets of tires I've used. And they hug corners just like my sport bike running the Michelin Pilot....foot dragging around some corners and didn't realize I was that low to the ground until my foot rubbed the pavement. Rain performance.... never had an issue feeling like I'm breaking traction. This tire for me has been incredible for me and my riding I do. Only you can determine what tire is good for your riding style. My next tire.... im intrigued by the Dunlop Trail max Mission. I like what I read and feel I will have the Dunlop on my bike next and see how I like them.

I'm now running what I'm calling the "Shinko Adventure Mullet", 804 front, 705 rear on my V-strom650. It is NOT great for sand, but really good for paved and gravel. Controllable power slides on FS roads, great turn and front brake capability. Good setup for the PNW where I live.

I live in Oregon and am thinking of running the same combo in my V-Strom 650. An 804 on the front seems like a no brainer; I'm just trying to decide between an 805 or 705 for the rear. 705 seems like it would be better on pavement, where I do most of my riding, and it seems like it would wear slower than an 805 rear also.

For sure! The 705 is a great tire. I did take a little effort to ride in the sand... but it did work. It was steep dowhill off-road descents where I looked for a "knob" to slow me down... that did not exist with this tire... and often washed out. Not a fan of that situation. Good video. I’ve been running 705s and their Full Bore M40 variants for over a decade now on a V-Strom 650, Tiger 800 XC, Africa Twin, KTM 1090 ADV R, Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE, and now a Tiger 900 Rally Pro (I’ve still got the three Triumphs, and all three are wearing 705s). I keep buying them because they’re the best all-around tires I’ve ever tried. They’re capable of peg-scraping lean angles on the street, and they’re way better in the dirt than they look like they should be (except thick mud, of course). Excellent gravel road tire. And the price... just can’t justify spending $300 on a set of Motoz or something when I can get the Shinkos for half that.

Great "real world" review...thanks! I ran a couple sets of 705s on my '13 WeeStrom...liked them enough that I purchased a set when I upgraded to a '15 R1200GS LC this spring. Granted the GS is a heavier bike but I don't anticipate any issues. Can't beat the price... affordable doesn't have to mean cheap! Did a 3000+ mile BC/Alberta/AK trip last summer with them on the Wee...little bit of everything. Paved twisties, fresh pavement to that lovely granite-surfaced stuff that is common in BC, mild/moderate dirt, rain. We rode 4 hours in a driving rainstorm on Vancouver Island up to Port Hardy...no surprises at all. Durability overall was pretty good...8k rear, probably 2:1 front/rear. Drawbacks? Not that great in the mud and deep fluff...watch the tar snacks on really hot days, as you'll get the occasional minor wiggling. They'll take some getting used to, especially if you're coming off something with a more aggressive side tread. With that more "rounded" aspect, the bike will tip into corners quickly. Got used to that pretty quickly during the scrub in ride. Slight tread whine at higher speeds from the front but certainly better than the HOWL I was getting from the front Anakee Wild they replaced...

Tim Allen Hi Tim this is not a good mud tire or deep sand Tire. if that is what you are looking for. But it does everything else pretty darn good. And it has pretty good wear life. When I use a tire with more of a Knobby I get less than a third of the life. And the road manners are horrible. I like using the bike like a super Motard and you can do that with this tire.

Had a pair on my V-Strom 1000. Quite good in the dry. Crap on metal bridges, not fantastic in the wet. Not bad in the twisties, but they won't lean as much as a pair of scorpion trails for example. They wobble over 200km/h. Off road. Well. They are not nobbies, but better than dedicated road tyres. Tread pattern looks great on the bike. The best I've seen to be honest. I would buy them again if knew i would go off-road then and again. For 95% street riding, the scorpion trails are hard to beat. Cornering grip is insane. That's what i put back on after the 705's.

2nd set on my 05 DL1000. Street performance is good but front hates anything loose and weaves on center sometimes. I feel the rear does what it is supposed to do. I tried a Big Block on the front and that made the bike stable on loose surfaces. A lot of cornering was lost though it was a good combo for that trip. ADV and DP tires are always a compromise at best. Maybe a TKC 80 front next for trip with a lot of gravel .These tires corner very well on pavement but dont last that long. They are probably the best bang for the buck. My XR 650L wears TKC 80 front IRC GP1 rear, for real dirt it get dirt rubber. Off road in the West is very different from the East.

@@stiingya i use to ride my ktm on the street alot and i would always run a more street oriented tire on the front and more aggressive on the rear tire, my theory being i want the traction on the pavement up front and grip for climbing/mud in the rear, i can deal with the rear sliding around on the pavement and im a lot less worried about the front washing on the dirt.

Just an idea, but what if you tabulated the results at the end of each of these videos ? Thank you for your comment Dean. We are putting 21 tires to the test. Most are either 50/50 or 80/20 with a few outlying 60/40 and 70/30 tires. We are looking at tread depth, durometer readings, sidewall ply / make-up / and then the handling characteristics Highway, Twsisties, Back Country Roads, Deep Sand, High Speed Cornering, Gravel Roads, Dirt Roads... I began to rate them to begin with... and then the next tire "shook things up a bit"... so I am tabulating my thoughts and will release them once every tire has been tested. 17:27 to 17:30. That, good people, is the wrong way to pick up a motorcycle unless you're built like Sylvester Stallone or Arnold in more of their prime. His bike was hunched over some. Even with lifting mostly with legs, that still risked the back more. Pick up from behind and put your ass to the bike and "walk" it up if you're unsure if your strength. If you can squad more than 200 pounds multiple reps without killing your bike, then ..given "feeling out" your foot grip on the ground, you might be able to squat that sucker all the way upright. Don't forget the kickstand though if you lowside to the right. No insult meant Caparral rider, but just stating the facts so someone of equal or weaker strength and body statue doesn't hurt his or her back. Cheers and thanks for vid.

Can you really judge wet weather performance from a 20-30 yard section of wet tarmac and a hot sticky tire?
@chaparralmotorsports
@chaparralmotorsports 4 года назад
I can tell you how it felt... the same section of road I was able to test with three different tires. Only 1 of the tires allowed me to initiate a wheelie half way through without breaking traction. The other two... the rear tire just broke loose and spun. That is pretty good indicator for grip - but not water evacuation. Thanks for watching. - Kyle

Running a 804 front and the 705 rear. I am getting more mileage on the 804 than I got on a Mitas E07 Dakar front . Hoping for 10k plus on the 705 rear then will install an 805. I'll do a comparison of the mitas e07, the shinko 705 and the 805 later this year. Will also comment on the k60 scout.

I've routinely got 22k to 25k on a set of k60 scouts. My Miras E07 Dakar front got 15k before getting swapped for a Shinko 804. The 804 was swapped for another 804 after 11k but probably has another 4k on it. The Mitas E07 rear Dakar had 25k on it before swapping to a shinko 705. Probably another 4k on the e07 if I pushed it. So torn on what tires to try next on my 1090. 90% of my off rd is just gravel road, but these bikes are so big that anything other then the serious knobbie really feels like you might as well run straight street tires. It feels like to much street quality off rd is a way bigger down side then a knobby is on road. At least the front a bit more so then rear on mountain gravel roads. But if you get a good knobby and you have even 1 good long 1-2000km trip planned on street the knobby is 1/2 spent.

Try the 804 front with a 705 rear... I had that set up on a xt250 and it was awesome. I swear by the 705 front, but if you want something more aggressive, I'd try the 804. At about half the cost of other adv tires, it's worth a shot. I personally will vouch for the 705 front. I had it on my '14 r1200gs for 15k miles and it just started cupping with about 40% tread left. The thing is a tank
@chaparralmotorsports

Jeremy's response below is really the way to go. This 705 rear tire really did work well in all we gave it to tackle. It was the front tire that we struggled with... and an E804 up front would have totally solved those problems. Give it a shot. Knobby up front and a strong 80/20 in the rear. It works... I have run similar on my R1200GSA the MotoZ GPS in the rear and the ADV tire up front. That combo was dialed too... - Kyle

I hope at some point you will do a Africa twin vs Adventure sport review or at least share any thoughts you have on the two, It seems the Adventure sport model gets better reviews most the time but never really seen anybody compere the two I am looking for something a little lighter and better for dirt roads than my Tenere and just siting on them in the shop the Adventure feels like it may not handle as well that it might be more like the tenere kind of big fat and heavy but maybe its not noticeable when your riding.

I'm torn between these and the Karoo Street for an Indian FTR. Currently I have Conti Road Attack III tyres fitted which is optimum rubber for the bike, (responsive, good feel, grippy and quick steering) but isn't in keeping with the flat track look or conducive to dirt. I don't want to compromise too much pavement grip/lean angle and am dubious of the wider blocks and height of the Shinkos. I suspect that the Metzelers give greater feedback in addition to greater side grip when lead due to a more rounded shoulder, narrower tread pattern. Any advice? I can drag my knee/scratch with the Continentals currently on the bike. Don't want to forego that either. Any advice? Excellent video by the way. If you're going to learn to ride offroad on the DRZ400SM then yeah the 705s will serve you better than the stock Dunlop Sportmax tires.The 705s would serve you better in the wooded areas you describe as there will probably be softer soil where they can grab and get traction.
