Hey John - thank you so much for doing this! It's an incredible tour! Just want to throw out that if you got one of the DC cables from RGC or RA that support 480p -- it'll look incredible! The 480i from the cheap ones is okay, but DC is definitely worth the upgrade.
This is good information. Have you considered sending John one of those cables for review? I have followed him for some time and would definitely purchase one on his recommendation - and if it pairs well with the RetroTINK-5X Pro...all the better!
Nice! Now you need to check that Intellivision via component as I'm waiting to hear if that works. It does through a Tink2x so I would imagine it does on the 5x as well.
@@johnhancockretro Excellent! Excellent to hear! I now need to find someone with a Tink5x that I can test my new RGB boards with. Thanks for letting me know on the YUV output!
So I'm confused. What would be the difference between hooking up an original Xbox or Wii via component cables directly to my 70" LCD, or through a receiver, compared to going through this upscaler? Does this device just upscaler better than TVs and receivers? Thanks
$300 is pretty fair considering some of the alternatives and mods that system requires. Great to see you run through the gamut, much more can be done in the settings, but a quick down & dirty look gives you an idea
Wondering if gorgeous (but lower resolution) games player on the GameCube + Gameboy Player, can be edge-smoothed/curved to look a little bit more like hand drawn modern 2d, like: Yoshi’s Island Advance Super Mario Advance 2 Rayman 3 Zelda : Minish Cap ?
Hi John! Love the video. Right to the point and showing plays with different consoles. I can't help but notice that you didn't test the PS1. What is your take on using this for the PS1? I'm stuck on whether to get the 2X Pro or 5X Pro.
Great job John. Really cool to see what the 5X does with some of these more obscure console and computers! I've been loving mine. Even though the price is really high, I'm finding that it justifies every penny of the asking price. Thanks for the video!
No RF in on the Tink for the Oddesey, Intellivision, Atari,... right?😀 nevertheless, i looove these videos where you show off your beautiful, huge collection. Very smart to start with newer gen! Wheel in the younger crowd first, and then blow them away with old school 🤘🤘🤘🤘haha
Pricey indeed.. I might grab one someday, out of convenience/an all in one solution, but I'm covered in the meantime with the OSSC and Retrotink 2x-Scart I suppose. 🙂
i LOVE the TI-99/4A mention. It was my first computer, and first video game system. I hardly ever see it on retro gaming videos. So many great games, so far ahead of it's time (with speech synthesizer).. It came out the year i was born, the education software was so beneficial to my early childhood education. Hope you can do more videos of that system in the future. More games to check out for the system: Car Wars, Hopper, ATTACK!, Jungle Hunt.
Guys, my quest for a 4k TV with component female ports continues. Simply becaus ei have Psyclone Component Cables for PS2 and the uber rare & expensive Green Xbox Component cables (not to be confused with the cheaper $40 ones that also work on the Xbox360) These Green ones ar ethe ones that were $140 @ Circuit City when Xbox Lquanched. I tracked em down a couple years ago only for my Xbox to be busted from moisture basement damage. ugh. ~~FU Goodwill for being greedy with ur lame ebay store.
Amazing range of consoles. I think the 5x is the best way to hook up and play unmodded consoles. Yes, it is expensive but who really needs two kidneys, right?
Well... I guess I eventually going to get one of these to not have to switch upscalers depending on my consoles, I (at the time of this comment) use the classic Retrotink 2X for my Ps1, Ps2, N64, Wii, NES and SNES, and the Retrotink 2X SCART for my Genesis model 2 (which I need to get a better SCART cable to get rid of the jail-thingy... but at least is way better than composite... while I can somehow tolerate the blurry image from composite, it is a headache in the long run).
Wow all look fantastic. All from a little box!! Only downside is the price. Ok if ur plans are to stream gameplay but not so good if u just want to kick back and play games to relieve ur childhood
Hey mate, could you help me out please? I connected the Retrotink 5x pro correctly with the AV adaptor to a PAL PS2 + 4K HDMI TV. I switch to 1080p resolution on the device with RR Type 4 running on the PS2 and looking like complete trash. Like no improvement AT ALL. What could be the issue? Could component cables be the solution? Idk cause I believe something's wrong. Do you have an idea? :(
Actually the NUON is kinda the jaguar 2., cause was made by the same creators of the jaguar., also the NUON is not only a dvd that can play videogames., is a technology alternative to the DVD itself., was a format that competed against DVD and lost., and had the same idea than the 3DO, meaning sell the license to companies to make their own nuon
Hey John, What would you say is the best way/set up to play a N64? Just got the console and some games. Didn't hold up on new HD TV. Any wise shared would be greatly appericated.
Did you watch this video I did? It really depends on what your budget can be along with availability ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZcDgOUa4pjw.html
will depend on your tv. if your tv's max display is 720p then, no. if your tv displays 1080p or higher then, yes. plus the 5x has better polygon smoothing options.
i seem to be the odd man out here . But i think the cleaner the out put on old 8 and 16 bit systems..and higher the resolution the worse they look .. the pixels get unbearably chunky. I have found that going composite to retro tink then into an HD-CRT with HDPT turned on gives best of both worlds. smooth pixels ... way closer to how you remember them from back in the day but also no visible scanlines and no lag.
I just watched another video of someone using the 5x on an Atari 7800 which played both the 2600 + 7800 titles. Might be worth switching to one of those.
One thing worth considering is the RGB mod for N64. Its much cheaper than the HDMI mod, and when combined with the RetroTink 5X-Pro it makes for great results. I would say overall that option is more cost effective and yields equal result to the HDMI or really close to it. For DreamCast, Retro-Access and Retro Gaming Cables makes a SCART cable with switch on it to be able to play games in RGB and VGA modes, makes for great results as well with the RetroTink.
My favorite console is the ps2. Do ps2 games look better on native hardware with the 5x or does it look better on bc ps3 with the upscaling that the ps3 uses?
One of your BEST videos, Mr Hancock... I did really enjoy It too much... I'm agree with you: great results, but a bit expensive... Greetings from Spain... 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hello! Do you have an Amstrad CPC to test on the RetroTINK 5X Pro? The CPC as diferent resolutions and some game just dont output any image on the OSSC, and the crack part ussually also gives a black image on OSSC, if you have a CPC and can test it let me know.
I don't no whether I should purchase this or the 4k retrotink? I'm not sure the price tag for the retro 4k justifies my use for it since i just have a ps1/2.
The price is why I have not upgraded from what I have. I use this product alot when making videos and hopefully as time moves on it will go down in price.
This is on the list to buy. Looks nice. less tinkering. Does fast resolutions switching as well. downscaling is in alpha at your own risk with other stuff added to it. -GBS-Control came out also. Id say is a newer Framemeister. since it isn't fpga based. It offers a bit of lag, prob less. I never noticed the Framemeister lag. does down scaling also if ur hooking up to a certain pvm. -OSSC pro is coming out soon. IDK when. I bet it will be a killer product with lots of settings and inputs. I hope for easy profiles. I hear it will offer to play fpga cores on it. making nes and atari or something that doesn't offer rgb a bit better. You can still hook those consoles however you want thou, modded or not, i bet it will look sweet still. MiSTer would be better overall for cores. -Another scalier coming, idk name or what it will offer. Im still using the Framemeister for pretty much everything. My newer tv didn't have component and still have the wii hooked up to the framemiester. OSSC, retro tink 2x and even the Framemeister if you still have it are grate options. I think ill upgrade when i see one i like the most. I need something that changes resolutions better for saturn and 480p upscaled nicely. I hope one day we get a nice 4k or even 8 k scalier. There was a artical about if there was a scalier for 8k it would be able to scale the pixles perfectly.
I know these upscalers are kind of esoteric but damn I wish they all weren't so obscenely expensive. If it was half the price I'd get it in a heartbeat.
I have the second gen RetroTink, and I love it. BUUUT. Seeing a lot of the reviews of the 5X, I may upgrade. Have enough old systems (PS2, Wii, Gamecube and SNES) that aren't modded that look like they would be beautiful using the RetroTink 5x.
I just loaded up Desert Strike on the Genesis, and I noticed the same blue border that's on Sonic and Final Fight in the video. Interesting thing is I'm not using an external upscaler. It's direct composite out to the composite in on my TV. So it must be the Genesis itself, not the Retrotink.
Hey John Hancock one thing I would like to see and I believe others would too is comparing this one to the Retrotink 2X-Multiformat and Retrotink 2X-Pro for those of us running multiple systems. I love this video and the channel John!
Cool to see you test the TI99 4/A. My first system. I spend a lot of time playing Munchman, Parsec, TI Invaders and the best game on the system - Tunnels of Doom.
I'm so glad you went to wii first, that looks amazing. Have you had a chance to try this with the Mclassic add on in basic? I remember seeing a review where it managed to improve the 2x pro marginally on the basic setting. I think that plus the dual RGB custom console would max it out completely.
i have the (e.o.n 64 ) on my n64 and i have the e.o.n hdmi one on my game cube, with the M classic. those are the only older consoles i have.do you think i need the 5x?
@@johnhancockretro The device does about as much as it can with that kind of signal. There’s a reason composite Vs. S-video tends to be the dividing line between “eh” and “pretty good” for standard definition connections. I’d say the HUD looks pretty good in Castlevania, though.
I have to be honest. The output doesn’t look good for a $300 device. To make a point of its benefits an a/b comparison with something looking worse would probably be worthwhile.
@@johnhancockretro totally agree for capture. But for sitting down and playing it’s a hard sell at the current price. This looks and performs like a sub 100$ product. The color fringing on some of the examples was glaring. The N64 output was pretty bad - but maybe that’s as good as it gets for that one. I’d really recommend doing testing with the simplest cabling possible and with the best signal out possible for some of the systems where you’ve used something else. Such as trying RGB scart for SNES, Genesis, PS1 and PS2. Even an Amiga (your CDTV) using RGB output. I strongly suspect there’s a cash grab happening in the hobby due to a vacuum-like situation and lack of options. Story might be different if OSSC pro weren’t complete vaporware.
@@espressomatic This is not a sub $100 product. I have had several devices help me capture and this is the best out there right now. You want in depth coverage of this go check out Retro RGB/My Life in Gaming. This product has been universally praised and does great things for retro consoles and computers. The price of the product is high but dont let that fool you into thinking this product isn't valuable. While not for everyone, this product is rock solid.
