Maybe gel bleach would work well with your foam stamps? They look like they need a thicker medium that will stick to the foam, so the gel might work?

26:33 as someone who used to work at a hair salon, sharpie is the natural solution to bleached black clothes. Lasts a couple washes and easy to reapply 😊

So my wife and I run a dye studio, and she dyes yarn and fabric for a living. With dyeing - always scour first - this removes any excess oils, waxes, or other things on the fabric used when finishing it. 2nd when you're trying to get crisp prints with dyes, you need to thicken the dye to make sure it's not just absorbed by the fabric and bleeds out, imagine it being the consistency of screen printing ink. You can do this two ways, either stamp the thickened dye, or stamp a resist and then emersion dye the fabric (think of processes like batik). You can thicken most dyes with things like agar agar but I'm not sure how bleach will react to that. Other methods would be creating a resist by folding and clamping the fabric between blocks, look up shibori and itajime methods. Edit - It just occurred to me that the "no splash" bleach is already thickened. I'm guessing that would work better for the stamps and stencils.

I also noticed that for the rubber stamps in the videos they were watching all had thin lines, whereas the ones they were using were solid shapes. I don't know how much of a difference it would make, if any, but I feel like that might be why the bleach was kinda beading up and just rolling off. Edit: Had paused halfway through the video before they got new bleach and saw the updated results.

So I helped my mom learn a version of this technique to teach it to her adult ESL class. Here’s some stuff we learned via trial and error (some things you mentioned in your video but I wanted to repeat them for emphasis): 1) definitely use the highest cotton percentage you can. Other materials either turned a weird blue-gray or didn’t change at all 2) we put our 50/50 bleach solution in spray bottles and then used some chipboard shapes/ metal shapes that we got from the dollar store as a sort of reverse stencil 3) if you want to do the spray bottle method, make sure to turn the spray nozzle to as fine a mist as you can, and make sure to spray from above and not at an angle because then it gets under the stencil edge. also watch out for drips! 4) use hydrogen peroxide to neutralize the bleach when it reaches the shade you want it to be (we put the hydrogen peroxide in spray bottles that looked different from the bleach bottles so we didn’t mix them up) 5) we rinsed our shirts with water and then hung them to dry. we discovered that hanging them in the sun made the bleach lighten more even after hydrogen peroxide so keep that in mind 6) make sure you dry the shapes off with a paper towel before you move them or they’ll spill more bleach on your shirt 7) we were making our shirts for Halloween and loved the results. It was really easy to find seasonal shapes at the dollar stores where we live but you can also get some online. Also the black shirts with orange bleaching looked very spooky and cool 8) using sharpies to fix our mistakes was so easy and worked very well Sorry for the novel! I just love this technique.

Mixing bleach and hydrogen peroxide can be dangerous as reaction produces oxygen, avoid mixing larger quantities near sources of ignition :D mixing bleach with many household items can be quite dangerous.

around 4:13- I wonder if leaving the clothes slightly damp would actually make the clothes take the bleach better- you could probably go a bit over without having it bleed as much cause the fabric is already semisaturated with water?

My mom has a friend who's made and sold clothes with bleach designs for years and she told us the trick is to use hair bleach. It's a lot thicker so it holds the shape better on fabric, doesn't spread under stencils, and sticks to stamps really well.

I sometimes draw on tshirts with bleach using a dried or used up marker that I soak in 100% bleach, and it's worked well for me, just have to wash the shirt immediatley after you are done drawing

For stenciling, the best results I've seen come from using freezer paper for the stencil because it can be temporarily ironed onto the material, so it's less likely to let the bleach under the edges of the stencil, and then you use a spray bottle to mist the bleach on lightly so it doesn't soak through the material under the stencil anyway.

The best stamps will probably be wooden. Silicone or plastic based stamps do not lend themelves well to wetting with high water content dyes/paints because of water's surface tension.

My best result was with a stencil made from contact paper and a very light spray of bleach. Once you see if you need more, you can repeat the spray until you get the level of coverage you want

Mid pandemic we had to mix bleach in spray bottles for cleaning covid testing areas and the bleach had to be mixed fresh daily in addition to learning that bottled bleach can expire in less than 30 days after opening.

Something I've learned for metal stamping is when you're trying to center text, find the middle letter and work your way out from there instead of stamping like you're writing.

You could try getting a candle and 'drawing' the wax onto the fabric (and as an extra test, melting the wax with a heat gun) before bleaching, then once the shirt is finished, wash it with hot water to melt off the wax. It has almost definitely been done before but I don't watch many bleaching videos so I have no idea if it works lol. Also 5:40 CPR! XD

You should try doing a painting of free hand drawing with paint brushes. Do a Part 2.5 lol and see if you can also add colours into the bleach or spritz the bleach with colour once done 😊

I have a friend who has done a few shirts for family gatherings (reunion type events) and she swears by 100% bleach and acrylic stamps. I've never actually tried it myself, it's just a thought.
