3 days after this video was made:FB Marketplace ad "Pavement Princess, never off roaded, needs all 4 airstruts, Transfer case and transmission replaced.....other than that, vehicle is perfect".....😂
Awesome to see someone actually take out their GL for some real offload fun. I have a 2012 GL550 and hope to get out to some trails. What kind of tires do you have? Do you have the offload package?
idk if there is an "offroad package" for the Gl's. I just placed some offroad wrangler tires on it and it's offroad perfromance went up 300%!!! The computer of this vehicle does so much!
///Middle Raged Man off road package gives you a two speed transfer case. It’s so hard to find a used one cause the dealers/sellers don’t always list that the vehicle has it
@@AMGTOUGEX I have one with the off road package, it has full length 3mm steel bash plates, two diff locks, low range and 3 stage airmatic. Makes it much more capable than standard, still have to address the weakness in the airbags which it almost looks like you may have issues coming up!
How reliable has been the airmatic suspension? I have a e63 and the struts failed at some point, this would be a major while doing some off roaring in the middle of nowhere.
THIS. IS. AWESOME. I have a 2007 GL450 without off-road package and was about to sell it and buy an FJ80 to keep up with my coworkers. I think after this video I will purchase a good set of all-terrain's and test it out before I just condemn its abilities. Did you press the DSR and Off-road program buttons to assist you on while doing this?
No. Don't need downhill assist and I don't have the offroad package or diff controls. It's just good awd system traction control. Also it climbed a pretty steep slick side of a hill very well
Don't look like the suspension was raised and asking a lot from street tires and from the vehicle in general. Plus never, ever get it clean underneath BUT your ride your dime.
For some reason the air suspension decompresses when in weird situations like that (getting stuck). IDK why. But the video shows you max height on all other times.
@@AMGTOUGEX I do know this: If you are replacing all four tires on GL550, or similar Mercedes, and the tire folks insist on raising the vehicle on a lift, could not find a simple switch to turn off the air compressor or air suspension, Like in older American vehicles, you need to disconnect the battery located under the passenger seat. Yep, a pain, or just pull the fuse for the air suspension. Otherwise when they lower the vehicle back down all the air in the system has left the building. If your compressor is weak or has any problems it will not be able to raise the 550 back up. After changing that compressor 4 times, 2 defective ones, OEM type, and one to check my possible defect, I can do a complete swap like a NASCAR pit crew. Also found shortcut to the process that does NOT require the removal of that large and heavy 21" front wheel and entire inner fender. Just remove the PLASTIC "skidplate" and remove 3 lower bolts holding plastic inner fender at the bottom and bend it back held in place by bungee cords or what you have handy. The compressor is right above you and only 3 bolts hold it in place plus air line and line goin to air intake filter. Good time to check that filter. If it ever sounds like a jack hammer, add a simple rubber gasket, like on a water hose nozzle above the worn out rubber boot on the boot closest to front of the vehicle and to right front side. Stopped our compressor from touching the frame when compressing. Like to never figured that out. Was going to add gaskets to all three "feet" but that one fixed it. I was so proud of myself and loved that ride. Like a 4 door Corvette or E450 AWD. Of course I got hit head on a few weeks later by a woman that said she went to sleep. Sheite happens. Wanted to replace it with AMG version with over 700hp but wife test drove a newer GL450 with smaller V8 but twin turbos but I voted against it. Just not the same so she wound up goin to an E350. Nice car and performs ok but I'm still lookin for deal on that AMG GL550. Sorry, PTSD and me got carried away. Again.
hahaha! Surprisingly after all the abuse it still runs like a champ. Broken side step bars tho, used it against a tree to "swing" around a tight corner. Need steel steps.
I love how you do a video showing this vehicle offroading, but blast annoying generic pop bs throughout the entire thing to make it absolutely unwatchable.
Unfortunately, GL is not a reliable SUV for off road fun. It drives nice on the highway, provides a comfortable ride however it is an endless money pit.
