Etnies and Sole Tech period are amazing. Skater-owned, vegan, only skate shoe company with a direct partnership with Michelin for soles. They last forever, are super comfortable and durable, and provide incredible shock absorption. Been skating Marana/Joslin cupsoles for years.
I skated the etnies windrow vegan shoes. They actually lasted a long time considering that they were synthetic. I actually prefer the look of synthetic suede over normal suede. I also like the flick on etnies vulc shoes.
fun fact, etnies/ sole tech owned a brand called "Sheep", which were all vegan shoes in the late 90s to early 2000s. Mainly because most synthetic suedes are tightly woven fibers of wool.
Etnies have always been really big on comfort. I started skating in 2000, and they were a big part of the puffy skate shoe phase, in which they pretty much reigned king. I can remember kids having them that didn't even skate just because they were comfy lol. A lot of the pure skate shoe companies were really good and I'm sorry that the big brands came and ruined it. Etnies, DC, Osiris, Eś, and globe were some of my favorite shoe brands. Even though most still exist, its nothong like the foothold they once had in skateboarding. Istill try to skate only skate brand shoes to this day. They in end, are what will help keep skateboarding alive. Those big brands will dip out again after popularity starts to dip. Nike SB, Addias and them are posers, just trying to rake in money through a different "sport". When it comes down to it, they are about the money more then anything else. They left us before and will do it again. The real skate brands are what keeps the passion and the progression of skateboarding going. Those that stick it out in unpopular times. That's real passion, the hard grind for years I on end. Not all flash and bs out there now. Don't trust the big brands they just want your dollar, they have no real interest in skateboarding, just the money to throw around and make it look like do. Also, for canvas shoes I have one suggestion. Lots of Shoe goo lol. You'd be surprised how far you stretch out the sole if you keep that toe/Ollie area of your shoe with a nice coating of the goo! Had a few pairs of old school vans last over a year this way.
Struggling with vegan skate shoes for years now. Somewhat difficult to find, not many color options, and usually not very durable. Wish more brands carried quality vegan shoes. Etnies and emerica are doing it right with the synthetic suede.
yeah, i bought my first pair of etnies ~4yrs ago and haven't bought anything else since then(except a nike which i regretted AND i payed way more), they're just that good. the best ones by far are the etnies marana but they're impossible to get here in poland (because they're being sold out the day they're here. literally). i'm not gonna write an essay on why they're so good because there is too many things that make them the best imo.
i also bought etnies chris joslin 2 for only 200 PLN (46$) and they last a year now. granted i don't skate as often as i used to, but it's still just so impressive. they're extremely comfortable and durable. and when your board hits your toes, you don't die, which is nice too.
As a vegan, I’ve never even thought about my shoes being made of animal skin. Damn that sucks, that’s a lot of shoes I can’t use, and suede is the best material for skate shoes imo. Looks like I gotta do some digging
@Progress Daily I just wanted to say thankyou for making this video, I may or may not buy a pair of etnies in the future although they have been recommended to me a dozen time or more over the past 15 or 20 years. But I really wanted to say thankyou John for helping open my heart to veganism I want to say about 7 years ago!
Skateboarding needs more RU-vidrs talking about this issue. Shoe brands need to be aware that there is a market. Especially with synthetic materials becoming as durable as leather or suede. I don’t want to have to take the one weird colorway they decided to use for the „special“ vegan variant. Give me a selection to choose from. At least give me all-black, give me all-white.
Getting myself some Etnies pretty soon Arriving some time next week, they are the Michelin marana shoes Pretty excited More excited on the fact that these are going to me my real pair of skate shoes Because I’ve never owned a true skate shoe, I’ve always skated Walmart off brands or vans that aren’t meant to be skated in
So stoked you’ve tried Etnies! I’ve been a fan of the brand ever since I’ve started skating and fortunately I’ve been riding for them the past years! If you can/want I would recommend trying the Windrow model! Not every colorway is vegan but they got some that yes, It’s a nice cup sole It would be awesome to continue skating Etnies, supporting skater owned brand and that cares for the environment❤️
I switched back to Emerica’s after years of strictly Vans half cabs and I am liking them. Etnies aren’t bad either and Lakai is okay but, wears out quick.
Yeah I really like my Emericas. They use a lot of synthetic suede and leather. I really like the G6 insoles and the soles are so grippy they stick to some of my carpets.
Curious to try some other shoes. I recently tried lakia. They were good but the toe box shape was just weird and they never mold to my feet as nice as vans
@@PokemonHell I like Emericas, but their vulcanised skate shoes wear down way too quickly for me. I probably would skate more Emericas if they had better cupsole versions of some of their vulc shoes.
John, love ur videos bro, you should really make a video trying the DC Lynx Zero, they last so long and they're super light too. I recommenda a lot!!!!! :)
Been practicing crooks and fs crooks and I’ve Just realised how centred your body is when you crook and not completely over the front foot from watching you 😮 thanks
Anyone know what skatepark this is? It's like the biggest pre-fab park I've ever seen and would love to go try this out with a mate! (I do live in the dfw area, fyi)
I have nothing against other brands, I just trust Nike. I know the sizing, how they wear and break in etc. I wouldn't mind trying out some new (old) brands for my collection, half the reason I haven't is just the amount of options. What brand do I even start with? Nike and Vans are like the two biggest rn, then there's like 7 or 8 great brands in second place. Could we get a video from John ranking the shoe brands as a whole?
Are you feeling these more than NB shoes? Seems like you are hyped on the Etnies. Then again I have a theory ppl. W/ypir skill leve and up can pretty much skate anything agree or thoughts?
Soltek over all make good shoes. Been running Etnies vegan shoes for the last 2 years and best shoe I've skated. Can't beat the sale section on a budget!
please keep showing love to the vegan shoes and spreading the word about them im so sick of trying to find vegan skate shoes but shops having nothing but vans era, cons cts, and nyjahs to chose from
I myself am a plant based animal loving guy but the whole vegan shoes thing gets me. It’s always made of nonorganic material that is essentially just plastic and since skate shoes are meant to be torn up it’s a dilemma. Love the review for these though!
It's really rad that Sole Tech are doing at least some vegan shoes, especially Etnies! It's a shame that larger companies like Nike and Adidas don't push for more vegan shoes.. With that said, Nyjah's shoes on Nike have all been vegan and I'm skating his third model right now!
I think the advantage of a vegan leather is thst it wont shrink as much with lots of sweat. Because most skaters i know.... sweat.😊 water and dry cycles could be bad especially salt water "sweat" but i. Sure if you wear the shoe every day then it wont be as bad. Bud i seen etnies at walmart now
