Testing EVAPO-RUST On a Batch of Rusted Tools

I've used Naval Jelly a lot over the years to de-rust individual tools but I'v been getting a lot of comments to try a product called "EVAPO-RUST" so I gathered up a few rusty tools, bought a gallon and decided to see how well it worked. Let's get busy!

When I pour it back into the container, I use a big funnel and cheesecloth to strain out some of the gunge.

Good point. It's amazing how much sludge comes off of a batch! My funnel has a filter but it immediately clogs.

When I use evapo rust im never in a hurry ill let it sit for days.

Heating the product up (WELL below boiling temperature I will add ) helps as well

If the item is rusty that has absorbed oil or grease the evapo rust doesn’t penetrate as well….its a good idea to degrease first.. Scotch brite or a wire brush greatly improves the final finish

I use this in a ultrasonic cleaner when restoring knives and tools. Have no complaints.

I've never used an ultrasonic cleaner but you're the second person who's mentioned them. I may need to look into finding one.

Notice everything that was near the bottom of the tank, are the items that have not shown much improvement. So those few items need to be put back in the tank and given another go too many items in a small tank.

Thanks! I guess it makes sense that having a lot of items in the solution will slow it down.

Yes, great product! It's the easiest rust remover on tools that I've ever used.

It doesn't remove pitting which several of those wrenches were.

Get an ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight and it will clean much faster. I have one. They works fantastic together.

Also the evaporust works even better with heat applied as well. The ultrasonic cleaner has a heater that can be applied up to 140° Fahrenheit. It's definitely the way to go.

Ed China did a very good video about how Evaporust works, if you are interested I’ve used it, I like it…takes time…. That one wrench, looks to have something else on it. I’d probably wire brush it first then Evap it

Ed's video is the reason I found this one. I work on car's and Ed mentioned a gel version I was thinking might be better than the traditional ones we use on car panels but I'm struggling to find any good reviews on the gel

I haven't tried the gel version. I agree, that would be great for body panels if it was easy to apply but even on Amazon the reviews are mostly negative. .

Naval Jelly eats away the metal. It's nasty stuff.

Huh, I've used it many times and had good results but I don't leave it on for very long.
