Testing Green Stuff World Maxx Darth Black Paint - Is It The Blackest?

Couple of notes I'd like to add - Musou black can be thinned with water, no need to get thinner. Also, you'll get better results on blackness if you spray it over black primer. I get that painting black on black is a little visually challenging (knowing what you've painted over), but it really does help the end result. If you do want to protect it, you can use your varnish of choice and walk it back with an ultramatte varnish over that. It's obviously not going to be as super black as night, it'll come out to a dark charcoal - but the absorb effect is kind of still there. EDIT: You may also want to do multiple layers of the matte black to build up the effect. I'd suggest at least two, it really does help.

You should try painting the inside of your Photo Booth with the Green Stuff World Maxx Darth! I think it would be better than the fabric. Another great video, again. Thanks Robert for all you do!

I think if you use some black fabric to cover the lower half of the metallic side panels in your booth it would cut down the reflection on the base and and sec secondary bounce from the lower part of the model. If you wanted to go pro on the job you could make some flags to cast some shade. Your hand flagging off the light made it disappear so if you brought your camera in closer and used some flags just off camera, made from cardboard painted flat black attached to your gator clips on wires, they could knock the direct light just off the parts you don't want to see the direct source light or bounce light reflections.

I was quite surprised by the new formula Vallejo Model Color black acrylic, ultramatt even brushed on, comparable to what i see here in that regard but probably nowhere as dark...of course difficult to gauge through the screen. Maybe worth a look if you're curious to have the comparison. Not really something I have the most use for in the model painting I do, but that fabric backdrop actually looks kinda tempting for my ragtag photo box 🤔

For the photography, seems the exposed areas of the booth are reflecting back onto the stand. If you cover up those the stand might disappear

I think light was reflecting off of the wall of the booth on to the base because when you moved it your hand blocked that light and the base did disappear

I would cut a strip of that black background and lay it up under that character so it covers the stand and I bet you'll never see it . The peice you lay over should dissappear. Love the channel helped me so much

Thanks for the test! I've read this in a comment under a test by someone else, but supposedly the oils from your fingers can really leave a mark/sort of frosting effect on the paint, which makes it look like it rubbed off. So guess it's best to not touch it with your bare hands.

Have used this a fair bit, i did back it on kickstarter, it clearly best with the airbrush in my opinion (the gsw one) And i can rub my thumb pretty hard over that without taking it off after its cured

Got your Blankend Blue II, nice paint. They even sent over a little pack of jelly beans, nice guys them at Gundam Pro.

I'm curious how this works with AK Interactive's Ultra Matte Varnish. I don't expect it to have the same effect, but the durability would be worth it. Also the flight stand did disappear fairly well at some of those points.

I bought two bottles of your Blackened Blue II. Looks great in person.

The misou looks impressive. I might pick up a bottle. I've seen folks use color shifts and pearlescent over these to good effect

Interesting video! If you want to make the stand disappear take another piece of the backdrop fabric and slip it in front of the stand.

You could roll up the bottom of the black sheet and cover the base with it , wouls disappear then.

Will your red be a more vibrant red towards the candy apple area or will it be more towards the red area like the Jumpwind Metallic Red when over a black gloss? I'm really hoping to the vibrant red.

It's definitely blacker then the other Black's that's for sure

TIP: To get this paint to look its “blackest", place a “polarizing filter” on your camera, AND your lights. It will take a little adjustment, to get them all aligned correctly. But, the results will be much better. 😊😊😊

I like the stand

As someone who works with 3d printing as their day job (and hobby), it's always a bit of an eye opener what level of quality people from the "outside" so to speak will still find impressive. As for the photography part. Put your phone in manual mode so that you can dial in the settings yourself. The phone is doing everything it can to get as much detail out as possible. In manual mode you can drop the exposure a bit and disable HDR which should help darken down the blacks while still exposing the white figure reasonably well. And if you shoot in RAW you can always go in and tweak things after the fact to darken the darks even further and bring out the highlights more.

Hi Rex, ik have a question, i have a Testors Aztek A7778 deluxe airbrush set. I bought it new and used it 2 or 3 times. But i didn't like the design. I want to sell it, do you know how much i can ask for it. It was around 350€ back in the day 10 years ago. It's perfectly clean. Best regards Joshua

"Impressive...most impressive." I would humbly suggest simply draping a separate sleeve of that ultra black fabric around your stand (even if you have to glue it on in segments) and I think the black on black will result in that hovering effect you're seeking.

I got the big bottle of it for doing some shadow demons

If you added a clear on the black...would it be darker than a regular flat black?

It always amazed me how GSW gets away with using the Darth name in their products without Di$ney/LFL coming after them. Great marketing though.

You have so much more experience than most of us do, thanks for the videos. Why not paint the background with the same paint so it has a better chance to disappear? If you had taken the black fabric away at the end it would have looked better than the black black fabric. The photo booth is too shinny unless you lower the light, can be good for flash photography when needed, but not for what you were trying to do IMHO. It is like my home theater, I do not like having anything along the sides of my peripheral viewing because the light reflects off it. The problem with the black black textured paint is it scratches/scuffs so easily. Not very useful in the end if you scuff it at all. I am not into the paint scene like you are but I like the videos and a challenge. The paint looked very impressive on camera next to all the other black spoons but you can't beat textured black fabric, but might come closer with paint if you painted it so it dried instantly on the surface which would make it brush right off. Kind of like powder paint before you bake it. Certain matte and flat paint in my experience has made some good strides in the durability dept without a clear coat, but it cannot match a gloss for durability, which you already stated. Especially exterior paints. But they are totally different looks that will never be overcome with the naked eye. You have to have visual illusions, and they have accomplished that in different mediums before. Having a base disappear on camera and the naked eye are 2 different animals. If you covered the base with the fabric it would disappear with the fabric behind it and the right lighting or lack of lighting like it sits in your booth at the end, but then you would not need to paint the base. Which negates your video.........

I thought it would have been great if - just to troll the audience - you set up the cloth background and then put your hand in there, pretending to hold spoons and saying, "Can you see it?" Then show that there was never anything in your hand. I like dad jokes.
