I got a set of handmade watercolor paper and did two tests:
1- Watercolor pencils on paper like the style I'm doing these days;
2- Same painting on handmade paper AND Arches hot pressed watercolor paper using watercolours
And of course, I have lots of questions!

Happy New Year! ✨LOVE the jewelry and the mug. I did not understand hot pressed watercolour paper when I first tried it, it’s so much easier to get smother blends on cold pressed paper but I gave it another chance when I was running low on Arches and discovered that if you accept the longer ugly stage, it can take more glazes and I find wet on wet has a more soft focused effect on it that I like. I have a feeling ink might look very nice on the handmade paper

Happy New Year to you too! :) I think I’m not used to the hot pressed paper but I remember really liking it with Neocolor II. I think I’ll stick to cold pressed for watercolour and hot pressed for Neocolor!

So I really like the handmade paper version the best. Two things in particular I saw was that the gouache looked like velvet once it dried on a the handmade paper. Luv that!. Second, those areas you showed towards the end where you found the pencil layers inconsistent once washed with water…I like that result, at least for this painting it added interesting texture. An then I agree, the pigments just seemed a tad more vibrant. Both looked great though. Again thanks for sharing. Sorry my comments are so wordy, my editing function in my brain doesn’t work so well on the not so good days. Oh, and cute earrings! And I don’t know what you are talking about regarding that cute pallet…I could find use for a dozen 😋. Take care Laurence 💜👋💜

I love your comments! And I agree with your point about the handmade paper. The differences are subtle but there’s something that makes this one the winner. I also love anything that brings more texture! I think I like it better when I mostly use paint and then draw on top rather than using it with mostly watercolour pencils.

I enjoyed the comparison. I know Arches is heavily surface sized. My understanding is that it’s made like this with the traditional method in mind, of soaking & taping the wet watercolor paper to dry taunt, to avoid buckling. I’m chronically ill and must make arting as simple and barrier free as possible, so that process is not for me. My experience then w/Arches is that it take’s washes a lil’ inconsistently depending on how much water is used & how much brush work I apply to any one area. The longer I do this, I’ve come to realize the particular surface used has just as much impact on my results as my skill and my choice of media & tools. It’s all a bit of jenga puzzle to figure out 😊🤞😊

This is super interesting! I feel like I’m discovering a new world. I’d love to see a documentary about watercolour paper making… maybe it’s a little bit too niche haha! Do you have a favourite paper then? I think one of my goals for the new year will be to find my favourite!

Regarding pencil extensions: have you unscrewed tops to allow extenders to open & then tighten to hold?

I've painted some paintings on handmade 100% cotton paper that's made locally in Poland...it absorbed water event better than factory made paper but the sizing was not do great causing the edges to blur. I guess that's the hot pressed texture and maybe different sizing od the paper what makes your paper somehow repellent.

What do you mean by sizing causing edges to blur? But yeah I felt like both papers repelled water but I don’t think the handmade one was hot pressed. I need to learn more about handmade paper I think! I prefer the result on the handmade paper but I can’t really pinpoint why.

Oooh what fun…so 1st, befor I forget Jackson’s Art had a blog post “ Everything You Need to Know About Watercolour Paper - Jackson's” can’t post a link but it has a lot of info, so may help a bit. I like Khadi handmade watercolor paper, it’s a cotton rag and even the lighter weight 150gsm vegan paper feels like cloth and is much more durable that the thickness might imply. It has imperfections too that may be due to is surface sizing being imperfectly consistent, being handmade.

Ok I think I need to read that post because there’s so much going into watercolour paper that I didn’t know about! Today is the first time I heard about surface sizing 😅 onto researching! This gets me excited about trying all the papers I can get my hands on!

I think what you mean in English is "handbuilding". About the mug, that is.
