I was using Planta premium for 2 months. At first I loved it. I am still new at being a plant mom and that app helped remind me when to water and fertilize. As my collection grew I realized it was kind of limited. For example it didn’t have Cebu blue pothos and something else I can’t remember. The customer support was super quick and added them but by that point I was like do I even need this anymore. I learned how to check the soil and watch for overwatering so I don’t need to bother with reminders. 🤷🏻♀️ I would still recommend Planta for absolute beginners though!!
I like Planta because I can keep a photo record of my plants along with notes. Ill probably turn off the water reminders at some point because now that it’s winter I’m finding them annoying.
Hey Harli! Just to let you know, if you have google photos... there’s a little square with a dot in the middle (second from the right) that will identify your plants by recognizing key characteristics from your pictures!
I am a wildlife refuge manager and use seek on a daily basis mainly because it works in real-time (meaning it identifies through your phone camera without the need to take a picture and allowing you to hit it at multiple angles)
Thank you for doing this and saving me a lot of time. In the market looking right now. A person like you who REALLY knows the plants and their nuances needs to review. Glad for your effort, knowledge and sharing with us!
I do a lot of outdoor gardening and always use Plantnet to identify...95% of the time the first result is correct! I love it and recommend it to everyone😊
For picture this, when it gives you the subscription screen there’s an “x” at the top right corner to get out of the screen. It’s the app I use and I don’t feel the need to have a subscription so it’s good to know you don’t have to
A lot if people I know have recommended Planta to me but I don't have an iPhone. Glad to know it's not much better than any of the other plant ID apps. Thanks for the video Harli, good stuff!
thank you. this was very helpful. i have so many unidentified plants and its be quite a task to try and figure out what they are. I ended up using the plant net app and it has been very useful.
I’m in a few Facebook groups, I post the photos in the groups and lovely strangers on the internet help me with identifying and caring for the plants. I also get to read their experiences with the plant and you always get lots of different opinions from people who have tried and tested multiple methods .
THNAKS A LOT HARLI , PLANT NET REALLY WORKED , EVEN IT DETECTED DEAD DRIED PLANT . I FIGURED IT OUT AFTER SOME SEARCHES AND COMPARING PICTURES OF THE PLANTS & FRUITS & FLOWERS
I use iNaturalist a lot. I love that you can choose what you think it is & other people can agree or suggest what they think it is. I love it for when I go on hikes!
Great video! Thanks for all the time you put in to research the apps & rate them! I really don’t use those apps much-I get a lot of plants ID watching RU-vid-like your channel! Tfs!
I actually use plantnet and picture this. In my experience plantnet works great on all fauna outside, like trees or if someone had an awesome garden and you'd like to know what species they have - very accurate outside, not so much inside. Picture this works best with one leaf or one flower in the picture. It's also great that if you don't find a match you can upload it anyways and the community can help you out 😁 I don't have a subscription, I just wait until I can search again.
I use plant snap but I always have to cross reference with some google searches because it's not always accurate but I use it mostly when I'm out hiking to identify flora
Thanks for this video! I use Planta currently to help kinda keep me on track with my watering schedule and what rooms my plants are in. (I still check them daily but it helps me track the last time I watered and such) Since I usually know what I’m buying before I purchase it I haven’t tried the plant ID yet. I do find that they are missing a bunch of plants in their registry, even a Monstera Deliciosa is listed as a Swish Cheese Plant, however the Variegated version is correct. So it can definitely be a hit or miss. They are also missing most of the cacti and succulents. I would love to see a video on other functions of these apps can offer, such as the watering or fertilizer reminders❤️
SO GLAD you filmed this video! I felt like I was using the app wrong. I was at Walmart and found a Cebu Blue Pothos, but none of my ID apps could confirm it, so then I got worried and second guessed my ID abilities! Luckily, I still bought her and was correct :’) Overall, I have been fairly unimpressed with plant ID apps and don’t believe the price is worth it. BUT, I do believe using up-close pictures of 2-3 leaves does help when uploading pictures.
I just downloaded a bunch, they suck. Google Lens seems to work best for identification, actually impressed, thanks to the commenters below who mentioned it!!👍
I've tired quite a few of these for sure! I find that it really depends on the photo. They need a good shot of the leaves and no background distractions. Personally, if I'm getting stuck on one that an app can't identify, I'll take it to my insta-family. Usually someone comes to my rescue. Lol
There is an amazing house plant facebook group called House Plant Hobbyist and they are great at helping identify and just give great care tips depending on what you need! Also just a fun supportive group of all active plant enthusiasts. facebook.com/groups/houseplanthobbyists/?fref=nf
I downloaded some and deleted some as soon as I saw your IG. But I have a few more to try now. I like Planta because it also shows where your plants are, what the exposure is like, and if it’s appropriate for that plants all for free. So I’m using that as a tracker as I get more plants and move them around. Useful for a noob.
This video was interesting for me, so now I may just download one so I can see what I find out on some of my succulents or cacti. Thanks Harli, another good ONE!!!
Like I def agree that humans are better at this right now. And even humans are constantly reclassifying plants! Relying on a random app for it is.. so weird to me. The AI to get really accurate identification would have to be pretty advanced. And not like... Just something on the app store
Yeah, but sometimes, names are different from place to place (not the scientific name I mean, but the common one). On PlantNet, if you click on the common name of the plant, it gives you a list of names that people call it in their region. You can also add your own! So it can help you identify it if you are familiar with a certain name. And if you click on the scientific name, it directs you to the plant's page where you can find all the pictures and quite a lot of information on the plant, depending on which plant it is. Some are rare, so there is less info.
Harli i have been able to identify my plants by watching you, Nick Pileggi and Summer. Others I find on google. House plant groups are great too, so I don't need an app. Thanks for the video.
loved this video. I'm a new plant owner and i looked for apps for not only for identifying (like if i see a plant somewhere i like or propagating) but also to track my own plants for watering, light, food, re-potting. I'm an over waterer then i underwater when i try not to lol but thanks for the video. i use smartplant and picture this and Houzz is good for advice from others. im gonna look into plantnet
I dont use any plant apps because they just don't get all of them right. Even I can figure out the easy ones, I need them to tell me the harder ones to identify and it just hasn't worked on any of the apps so far. Great info !!
Those apps are NOT worth any money at all. I have always just done a google image search and it has taken me less than five minutes to get a plant ID. If they were accurate, then yes, but they generalize their results (guesses) and I can do that myself. Thanks for showing us this.
I use Picture This - you don't need the trial or the paid version to use. It just makes you think that you do. I find it very useful for plant care information. If I'm not sure what to do with a particular plant I just search it up (it also saves your past IDs) and it tells me everything I need to know. It's saved my butt on multiple occasions!
I use picture this and have been successful so far. I even take pics of the plants I know the names, because you can create your garden and go back for reference (on diseases, care etc)
What I use is picture this and it’s super easy to use. I also use that company’s Buh identifier. What you really need to do is look for the one that matches best
You can just press the X when the premium ad pops up, you don’t have to pay for these apps! I also use picture this and I have never paid for it. It’s just a popup you can click away. I’m sorry you wasted your money :(
I love using picture this when im out shopping and things dont have a name on them! Then I add it into my planta app and it tells me if it will work in that rooms lighting! Makes for a little bit smarter shopping haha, and I like planta because it reminds me water my plants!
Yeah, it might be that, but sometimes, the app is just weird! Like, I use PlantNet, but I tried PictureThis and Seek. Using very clear pictures of different parts of one plant, Seek wasn't able to identify the plant, whatever picture I was using... But I could identify it very quickly with PlantNet =\ so it's weird that Seek wasn't able to identify it despite having tried many pictures. 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe the app is just not there yet.
Thanks for this plant app review. I dl an app a few months ago but it was pretty useless so I deleted it. I love my plant peeps here and on Facebook to help me ID my plants. I'm going to try and look at Google lens though since there were many who suggested it hwre. Thanks for sharing😊👍❤.
Hi I really like your video your very entertaining I used picture this on panax ginseng it is a very hard plant to find curious to know if you ever looked for it or if it grows by you and if you know of any tips on where it grows best also i had the same problem ive tried a few of these all the same results
Just an fyi on Inaturalist, you first post the photo you put in what you think it is, which you can compare with other species etc. through inaturalist if your not sure, then once you post other people then can confirm your id or offer other suggestions. It is more of a citizen science app then a houseplant id one, so if you did post them make sure to hit the captive/cultivated button :). Anyways I really enjoyed the video it was interesting seeing everything compared.
