For several years I've suspected Diawa hyper sensor isn't as strong as it claims. I was using the 18lb type but was constantly breaking off when casting a 3.5oz lead. Eventually I upscaled to the 20lb type and never had a problem.
Here I compare the Hyper sensor with Korda Subline.

For years the breaking strains and diameters were as follows: 10lb = 0.30mm, 12lb = 0.32mm, 15lb = 0.35mm, 18lb = 0.38mm and 20lb = 0.40mm. I still use the same guidelines today as there are very few exceptions that are true.

Hi John. I think that's pretty much summed it up pal. Think it's a no brainer way of choosing a mono. Cheers pal👍🏻 Tight lines Steve.

Thank you! > 10yrs ago I went to PB products control mono and it hasn't let me down in any way. Really recommend giving it a try.

Good test Steve, funny with lines, tend to stick with the ones that hold up, Highly recommend the Fox exorcet 18lb 👍🎣

Hi Matti. Yes I've heard the exorcet is good line, a mate of mine swears by it. I'm now using the gardner HD 15lb and really happy with it. Cheers pal Steve

Love 15lb Subline , never had an issue.

Hi mate. It's very robust line, I used it over in France whilst using a bait boat simply for it's abrasion resistance. I struggle to cast it compared to other thinner lines so don't really use it anymore. Tight lines Steve

Very interesting pal and i agree 100% lines now are all about appealing to guys casting to the horizon and diameter is crucial now as lines are pre stretched etc to get them as fine and castable as possible at the expense of true breaking strain i fish 0.40 dia in 90% of my angling as i dont need to cast a huge distance and if a fish runs into a weedbed or pads i have a good chance of getting it out plus heavier lines sink better great video tightlines pal

@BivvyLife Год назад
Hi Alastair. I'm completely with you on the 0.40mm but my casting is poor now I have a dodgy shoulder so have to go a bit lower diameter than that. Having said that I've now joined a new water where there's more close up style fishing,I may consider changing when I need to renew my spools. Tight lines pal Steve

scales are now ruined . Hey do you use a Palomar knot as it gives most strength and a accurate test
@jamesleiser5240
@jamesleiser5240 Год назад
Figure 8 knot has a 75-80% break strength of the rated line. If looks like the Daiwa is breaking true to its rated strength.
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife Год назад
Hi James. It wasn't breaking at the knot that was the reason I did the tests. Did you note the Subline was breaking over 20% above it's BS whilst using the exact length of line and figure of 8 knot? Steve

I wouldn’t use those scales now good job they are cheap ones

I've always used diawa hyper sensor lines and had no problems what so ever . But after your tests it's gave me a little doubt into the lines I use
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife Год назад
Hi mate. I've used the 18lb for 7 maybe 8 years and always had an inclining that it broke below its stated rating. I stepped up to the 20lb type and found that it did the job regarding holding up to casting but I've now switched to gardner hd as it's a touch thicker and more suited to a new water i'm fishing with more snags. The sensor seems to break a lot closer to it's quoted strength. It is thicker which would sum it up. Thanks for the feedback. Tight lines Steve

@@BivvyLife yeah I've never had any issues with sensor and was thinking of giving the hyper a go. To be honest I ignored stated breaking strains and go by diameter but that's just because I'm old 🤣 how does the original compare to the sensor in your opinion?
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife 10 месяцев назад
To be honest there's not a great deal of different other than the colour and the diameter, The hyper is probably a touch more supple.

Figure of 8 not a true test of strain Palmour or grinner would give a better indication of strain
@AidanRoker
@AidanRoker 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, you’re not actually testing the breaking strain of the line - just it’s knot strength when tested with one specific knot. Still useful to know, but not quite what it says on the tin.
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife 7 месяцев назад
That's an interesting observation. Did you take note of where all the breakages occurred?

Where is it breaking..at the knot I bet

No mate not at all, I thought that would be the case, always broke away from the knot. Very surprising. Tight lines.

To be fair figure of eight not a great knot
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife Год назад
Hi mate. To be fair not once did the knot give way on any of these tests. The mono broke at least 4 inches away from the knot on every test. Which knot would you have used? Tight lines Steve
@boybull4836
@boybull4836 Год назад
@@BivvyLife oh right.. personally I favour a palomar or grinner but have found over the years different knots needed for different monos to gain best knot strength.. kind of odd do you think that the line parted not at the knot?.. you'd assume the knot would be the weakest point if line not damaged.
@BivvyLife
@BivvyLife Год назад
Yes it's very odd that the line broke away from the knot. I guess there's a scientific reason for it or maybe I've had a faulty batch which has some random weak spots. 1 thing for sure though, I've not had any problems with the gardner HD line that I'm now using. I can give that some welly when casting and not worry about breaking on the cast. Tight lines pal Steve
