*Fun fact not a lot of people know about these type of long-handled jian:* It's still meant to be used one handed. Although, the length of the handle would lead you to believe that it's meant to be wielded two handed. The purpose the extra handle length serves, is counter balance (as well as for comfort and grip positioning). You hold it just beneath the guard, and the rest of the handle that extends from the pinky of your fist, think of that as the pommel. But this isn't to say that you're not supposed to use it two-handed. In traditional Chinese swordsmanship (jianfa/jianshu) you're only expected to double up on the weapon if and/or when your lead hand becomes exhausted. Which means Jian techniques for both single and double handed forms, are completely interchangeable. This also explains why the sword is so lightweight
@Ezekiel_Allium
@Ezekiel_Allium 4 года назад
Thats... weird to me. Does counter balancing actually help with the handling of the sword? Or do you just mean it shifts the center of gravity back towards the hand to make up for the lack of a guard?
@camrendavis6650
@camrendavis6650 4 года назад
@@Ezekiel_Allium the counterbalance does make it much easier to handle, but that itself depends on the sword and which Dynasty it was used in as well as it's purpose. The type that Skal is using form the Han Dynasty is forged thick and tapers out thin, so it is lightweight despite its length, which is why using it one-handed is extremely possible. Spring steel. As for the guard, that's a different story. People misunderstand the purpose of the guard on jian. The guard is not intended to protect your hand from the enemies weapon, it's meant to keep your hand from sliding up onto the blade. Which is why it's small, but just big enough to stop your hand. What protects your hands from the enemy's weapon are the techniques themselves. Jianfa/jianshu movements are very defensive and can be wide and circular, deflecting and pushing your enemy's weapon away.
@wildrain8602
@wildrain8602 4 года назад
Um, no, who told you that? Seriously look at any period sword form meant for the han jian and most cuts are done two handed. The Han jian specializes in cutting with great force as the blade itself is very heavy for it's length. (And I am talking about actual, period Han swords, not these in the video, historically Chinese swords were much heavier than European counterparts (aside from Greatsword obviously) and this is proven by han artifacts of blades) i,t also specializes in being able to be weilded by one or two hands. It is very versatile, and is meant to be used with momentum, deep stances, and strong cuts. It's is not meant for clean cuts, it is for crushing the enemy. There is so much false information about Chinese fighting and weapons. I'm tired of these "sword experts" who only know about European weapons and assume it's all the same for Asia. It's not even close.
@wildrain8602
@wildrain8602 4 года назад
Also the swords in the Han dynasty that were only for single handed use, had shorter handles. Counter balancing? Seriously? How do people come up with this stuff.
@camrendavis6650
@camrendavis6650 4 года назад
@@wildrain8602 I wasn't just referring to Han Jian. I was reffering to two-handed Jian in general (at least the ones in similar length and proportion to European longswords) and of course from that standpoint, you'll get varieties depending on the era and components of the sword itself. I only felt it necessary to bring up this point when I saw how he was holding it. Of course a Ming Jian is handled differently from a Han Jian, but I should have been more specific. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

The blades are so thin that the strikes sound more like a whip than a sword
@Anino_Makata
@Anino_Makata 4 года назад
It's not really the thickness of the blade that makes that sound, but rather the blade geometry. If the cross section of a blade is well made, that it offers near zero resistance to striking a target, it creates the "sword wind" sound when throwing a cut with proper edge alignment. The Warrior Tachi and Uesugi Kenshin Katana made by Yomukuni which Skall reviewed makes a similar sound when cutting, even though both are thicker blades than either of the featured jian here.
@dero4378
@dero4378 4 года назад
damn. your right
@nahuelmat
@nahuelmat 4 года назад
@@Anino_Makata I believe the sound is more related to the speed rather than the blade geometry. I play tennis and you can get the whip sound swinging a racquet with the flat side, as it's supposed to hit the ball. Racquets are way lighter than swords, from 270 grams on the lightest ones and around 350 grams for the heavier ones.
@Anino_Makata
@Anino_Makata 4 года назад
@@nahuelmat Of course, speed is also a major factor in producing the sword wind sound. But the reason why a tennis racquet produces a similar sound is because while it has a wide surface, the net mesh and head's frame (apologies for the wrong terms, I don't know the proper terminology) provide little resistance against the air, due to the large amount of space where air can escape through the racquet. It's far easier to hear the sound on most tennis racquets than most swords, since racquets allow for more air to escape past them than any blade.

Some day I'll take that Magnificent Chu Jian out for a proper spin myself. I bought it from Skall last summer. Did make one attempt at cutting but my back yard is just too small for me to do proper core engagement, resulting in very weak swings that just won't cut it (literally). I've scouted out a potential location for cutting practice though I need to take a closer look. Will need better weather for that though, scrambling up a steep incline covered in brambles in cold and wet weather is not ideal.

They make bug suits. They are a double layered mesh. The outer layer is the fine netting and it is on top of a heavier weave. The second layer keeps the outer layer off your skin so they can't reach it. In my experience they are the best you can get other than setting yourself on fire. They are also cool since air can blow through them (another advantage over the fire solution).

Do to the fact that I love your reviews on fictional swords, and you haven't done any from any works of fiction lately, that you could do a review about Dawnfang/Duskfang. It's a sword that changes depending on the time of day, but the main sword bit stays the same. I think it looks really unique, and more importantly, I would like to hear your 5 cents on the matter

2:13 I see you're keeping the noseeums at bay. Think of it as a good sparring session.

Skal! Can you do a video listing books for learning swordsmanship. You have one from years ago but it only has 2 books and one is $90.

Awesome work as always. Just also want to bring your attention to a channel of Alec Steele and they are making a pair of hook swords currently if you want to try and get your hands on them for a future video I suggest checking them out.
