Just a small note: Laika was not the first animal in space, fruit flies were launched on an American rocket in 1947, reaching an altitude of 109 km. Two rhesus monkeys were sent to space by the Americans in 1948, but both died. The soviets got their first dogs into space in 1951. The spacecraft simply overheated.
