Incredible review and really talked about the most Evilist Dr who villain EVER!!!

Did you know Jacqueline Hill got injured in the face shooting that prop? The prop gun had a kick she didn't expect and it whacked her in the face.

William Hartnell himself was recovering from an injury he gotten during the Dalek Invasion of Earth serial. His supporting cast accidentally dropped Hartnell while going down the saucer ramp, and Hartnell hit his head on the camera stand. Ouch.

One of my favourite parts of the rewatching the Hartnell era, is getting to see the Doctor BECOME the Doctor we know. The Rescue has everything in terms of who the Doctor would become, it's one of the first times the Doctor arrives somewhere and actually knows where he is, giving the companions information, something which would become a staple of the show. It shows the wonderful softness in the Doctor that only Hartnell could do so well. And it shows the Doctor figure everything out by himself and confront the villain, again something which was quite new to the show. The Rescue is so quietly groundbreaking, mostly because we're so used to the precedents which it set going forward.

I love that so much, when i started this series i thought everything like him trying to kill the caveman were inconsistencies and retcons but i was surprised to see a lot of character development for 1, cant wait to see the massacre review for the doctor s speech

That moment when the doctor asks Susan to open the doors and then realises she is no longer there… Hartnell plays that wonderfully. Adore this story and, as others have mentioned, the recruitment scene (of Vicki) is wonderful.

The Doctor’s dynamic which Vicki in this story is so endearing. Hartnell is truly playing a man who just lost a the person he cared most about in the universe, so he is super vulnerable. Love how you can tell he’s hurting, and instantly takes on the grandfatherly role to Vicki; the scene where he tells her to not be upset with Barbara for killing Sandy, because she was just trying to protect her will always be one of my top 10 1st Doctor moments, it’s just lovely.

The Doctor recruiting Vicki is one of the best scenes Hartnell gets, and O'Brien acts it out of the park, too. Fantastic duo.

The ending scenes with the unmasking is so well done, it wouldn't have looked out of place in any era of Doctor Who. One of the funniest parts for me was when Vicki discovers Ian and Barbara are from the 1960s. As a resident of the 25th century, she has trouble believing people from so long ago would have any knowledge of advanced science and technology. It probably seemed even funnier to the contemporary audience given the rapid advancement in the 20th century. Even by 1963, we had broke the sound barrier, split the atom, developed superconductors, built particle accelerators, invented lasers, miniaturised electronics, created large computers, put communication satellites in orbit, launched probes to other planets, sent humans into space, discovered the structure of DNA and had a very good understanding of chemistry and physics. We had medical and industrial technologies (although maybe not refined) that a century earlier, would have almost seemed like magic. Saying that, if today I met time travellers claiming to originally be from 1500s I'd probably be a bit sceptical myself.

"Oh you public menace" Dude this is the same woman who ran over 3 Daleks on a truck in the previous serial, do you really think she's that bothered by killing innocent wildlife? She's seen the horrors of WAR lol.

This two parter story fully belongs to Maureen O Brien, everything that takes place essentially revolves around her, her desire to be rescued, her fear of Koquillion, her amazement at the arrival of new people, her anger at Barbara for killing her pet, her sorrow at having lost her father as well as her pet Sandy, the way she bonds with the Doctor, her amazement at the TARDIS, her humility at being asked to come with them, she shines brightly in this and in many of her stories. I think largely cuz she may be young, she wasn't asked to play a teenager. I'm guessing Vicki was someone in her late teens on the verge of entering her 20s, but was still full of energy of a thirst for life, essentially a college student where almost every day was spring break. If you were spending spring break with your parents and your grandad.

I dig the Rescue. It's short and sweet, doesn't outstay its welcome, is pretty well-acted and it has a nice script with lots of little character moments. It also introduces Vicky really effectively.

The Hall of Judgement sequence is one of my favourite scenes in all of Doctor Who. The plot twist, the ambient music from 'The Daleks', Bennett's ambiguous death - it's the perfect climax for one of the era's best stories.

Slightly off but since you brought up Thunderbirds so much, want to say Thunderbird 2 has always been my favourite solely for the pod vehicles especially The Mole.

Ray Barrett also appears in a Hammer Films movie caĺed the Reptile with future Dr.Who inquisitor Jacqueline Pearce. He also plays 'himself' in an Easter edition of an Alf Garnett Til Do us Part. It even has a small appearance by Pat Gorman as one of the pub customers who get thrown out into the street at the end of the play. Jimmy Tarbuck also appears and Arthur Mullard with the actress he did a cover of Your The One That I Want. Look it up its from 1967

I only chose to watch this story for three reasons: 1- because was it on the trailer of another Classic Who DVD I own 2- because Ray Barrett of Thunderbirds [10:47] is in it (#johnforfavouritetracybrother) 3- because it's a rare two-part Classic Who story, especially rare in the Hartnell era and the 60's in general. As others in the comments have also said, it's a terrific template for a mid-season 'breather & re-jig'.
